Book excerpt: “Why am I a punk? Because I wasn’t anything before, except different. And now it’s like I’m different, but with a vengeance.” It’s been months since the suicide of Darby Crash, L.A. punk rock icon and lead singer of the Germs. He checked out on the same day John Lennon was shot: December 8, 1980. But for Rockets Redglare, it feels like yesterday. Darby was the hot-as-sun center of Rockets’s world. Part ringleader, part god, and all charismatic manipulator, Darby was as close to family as a hustler and street kid like Rockets might ever get. Now, as Rockets amps up for another night looking for tricks and scrounging a meal, Sex Pistols and X lyrics on repeat in his head, he knows he’s come to a turning point–the scene is changing, and nothing’s as easy as it was when Darby brought him into the fold. From the underground clubs to the back of the giant “H” in the Hollywood sign, Rockets and his crew of friends spend the night burning bridges, building new ones, tripping and talking and searching for answers. As the dark gives way to early morning, the punks and the cops engage in their ritual standoff–and Rockets faces the ultimate choice: Should he stay or should he go?

  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book The Concept of the Employer written by Jeremias Prassl and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employment law has increasingly struggled to adapt to complex modern work arrangements, from agency work to corporate groups. This book suggests that the reason for this failure can be found in our concept of the employer, which has become riddled with internal contradictions in its search for a unitary employer, the counterparty to a bilateral contract, through a series of multi-functional tests focussed on the exercise of a range of employer functions. As a result of this tension, full employment law coverage is restricted to a narrow scenario where a single legal entity exercises all employer functions - a paradigm far from the reality of modern labour markets characterized by a fragmentation of work, from the rise of employment agencies and service companies to corporate groups and Private Equity investors. These problems can only be addressed by a careful reconceptualization and the development of a functional concept of the employer. The book draws on existing models in English, German, and European law to develop a definition of the employer as the entity, or combination of entities, exercising functions regulated in a particular domain of employment law. Each of the two strands of the current concept is addressed in turn to demonstrate how a more openly multi-functional approach can successfully overcome the rigidities of the current notion without abandoning a coherent underlying framework. It fills a crucial gap in employment law and corporate law with its analysis of the defects in our current understanding of the employer, and in developing a new functional concept designed to overcome the problems identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global financial and economic crisis that began in 2008 has blasted livelihoods, inspired protests, and toppled governments. It has also highlighted the profound moral concerns long surrounding globalization. Did materialist excess, doctrinaire embrace of free trade and capital flows, and indifference to economic injustice contribute to the disaster of the last decade? Was it ethical to bail out banks and governments while innocent people suffered? In this blend of economics, moral philosophy, history, and politics, Steven R. Weisman argues that the concepts of liberty, justice, virtue, and loyalty help to explain the passionate disagreements spawned by a globally integrated economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the process of European integration break down; how can it be repaired? In European Integration, 1950–2003, John Gillingham reviewed the history of the European project and predicted the rejection of the European constitution. Now the world's leading expert on the EU maps out a route to save the Union. The four chapters of this penetrating, fiercely-argued and often witty book subject today's dysfunctional European Union to critical scrutiny in an attempt to show how it is stunting economic growth, sapping the vitality of national governments, and undermining competitiveness. It explains how the attempt to revive the EU by turning it into a champion of research and development will backfire and demonstrates how Europe's great experiment in political and economic union can succeed only if the wave of liberal reform now under way in the historically downtrodden east is allowed to sweep away the prosperous and complacent west.

  • ISBN : 1304199991
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Seventeen Cities written by Scott Stambach and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-06-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen Cities is a collection of seventeen short stories, each set in a different city of the world, all connected through seeds of the other stories. The book begins in Minsk, Belarus with a letter written by a profoundly deformed teenage boy living in a hospital designated for survivors of the Chernobyl disaster as he copes with the death of the only person he ever loved. From there, the reader is taken into the home of a Manhattan stockbroker who unravels shortly after finding his name in the New York Times obituaries while eating breakfast. Next, to Rio where a mysterious man stumbles onto a hotel that contains all of time. Seventeen Cities is a visceral book that mixes, twists, and bends genres. Each story is told in a different voice, some reminiscent of Latin magical realism, occasionally playing off of Kafka, others experiment with traditional literary fiction. Just as varied as its genres, are its themes, which include the nature of time and love, religion, coincidence, and transcending loss.

Book Managing International Financial Instability

Download or read book Managing International Financial Instability written by Fabrizio Saccomanni and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a masterpiece. It combines a clear historical analysis of issues and causes of past international instability with a contemporary discussion of how to avoid future occurrences. It is a very informative book that caters to the need of the savvy and the uninformed. It reviews in a rigorous manner the core obstacles to achieving a durable global financial stability. The presentation is clear, simple and well organised. . . Saccomanni demonstrated a great understanding of monetary and financial matters. The book could not have been better timed given the deepening recession caused by the global financial meltdown. I am very delighted to recommend it. Chika B. Onwuekwe, Journal of International Banking Law and Regulation . . . the timing of this publication could not have been better, Fabrizio Saccomanni provides the reader with a well-written analytical and historical survey of the causes and consequences of international financial crisis and possible solutions. . . the book is enjoyable, compendious and concise. . . the book is worth reading by anyone who is interested in understanding the global financial system and is looking for a critical appraisal of its performance. In particular, students and academics of international economics can get a good overview on the issue of international financial stability, since the book bridges the gap between theoretical models and practical policy implications. . . Saccomanni s book is a well-written and valuable contribution to the debate as already said before the timing of its publication could hardly be better. Ralf Fendel, Journal of Economics and Statistics Recurrent instability has characterized the global financial system since the 1980s, eventually leading to the current global financial crisis. This instability and the resultant disruptions sovereign debt defaults, exchange rate misalignments, financial market illiquidity and asset price bubbles are linked, in this book, to the shortcomings of the global financial system which tends to generate cycles of boom and bust in credit flows. These cycles are set in motion by the monetary impulses of major industrial countries and are amplified and propagated through the operation of global financial markets. Fabrizio Saccomanni argues that to counter such systemic instability requires that national authorities give adequate weight to financial stability objectives when formulating their monetary and regulatory policies. He maintains that appropriate multilateral strategies to deal with unsustainable trends in credit aggregates and asset prices should be devised in the International Monetary Fund in the context of a strengthened framework to deal with global payments imbalances and exchange rate misalignments. Providing a comprehensive historical and analytical survey of the causes, consequences and possible cures of international financial instability, this book will be of great interest to students and academics of international economics and finance. It will also appeal to financial market participants and analysts, government officials and central bankers as a comprehensive survey of the relevant academic literature and of the state of the policy debate.
