Book Radioactive Isotopes in the Localization of Tumours

Download or read book Radioactive Isotopes in the Localization of Tumours written by V. R. McCready and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive Isotopes in the Localization of Tumours covers the proceedings of the 1967 International Nuclear Medicine Symposium, held at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, organized by the Institute of Cancer Research in association with the Royal Marsden Hospital. This book is composed of three parts encompassing 40 chapters. After an introduction to the principles of scanning and physical problems, this book goes on describing the physical aspects of mechanical scanning systems, collimators, cameras, autofluorescope, and photoscanner. The second part reviews the radioactive materials for tumor localization. This part specifically examines the technique of regional oxygenation, mercury-197 chlormerodrin, and TRIGA reactor. The third part is devoted to the clinical aspects of tumor diagnosis. This book is of value to physicists, engineers, chemists, and clinicians.

Download or read book Brain Tumor Imaging written by Elke Hattingen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the basics, the challenges and the limitations of state of the art brain tumor imaging and examines in detail its impact on diagnosis and treatment monitoring. It opens with an introduction to the clinically relevant physical principles of brain imaging. Since MR methodology plays a crucial role in brain imaging, the fundamental aspects of MR spectroscopy, MR perfusion and diffusion-weighted MR methods are described, focusing on the specific demands of brain tumor imaging. The potential and the limits of new imaging methodology are carefully addressed and compared to conventional MR imaging. In the main part of the book, the most important imaging criteria for the differential diagnosis of solid and necrotic brain tumors are delineated and illustrated in examples. A closing section is devoted to the use of MR methods for the monitoring of brain tumor therapy. The book is intended for radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists and other scientists in the biomedical field with an interest in neuro-oncology.

Book Radioactive Phosphorus in the Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Cancer

Download or read book Radioactive Phosphorus in the Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Cancer written by Robert S. Nelson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diagnosis of cancer in the inaccessible regions of the gastrointestinal tract is difficult at best. Neoplasia frequently advances insidiously and largely without the patient's knowledge. Ideally, simple survey tests applied periodically to those segments of the population considered most susceptible should be available. For all practical purposes such means of diagnosis are nonexistent. Those who specialize in gastro intestinal cancer must, therefore, do the best they can. The best consists of many means, all good in themselves, but often subject to failure or misinterpretation of results. Any aid which will give even a small amount of positive information to tip the balance for or against the diagnosis of cancer in an obscure situation must be considered of value to the gastroenterologist. The material presented in this volume represents our experience with such an aid over the past eight years. The use of radioactive phosphorus (P3l!) and a miniature Geiger counter to record the differences in beta emission over tumors as compared to normal tissue now appears clinically useful in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignancy where the organ is available for such instrumentation. An attempt has been made to present the findings as objectively and as specifically as possible so as to provide maximum assistance to other gastrointestinal oncologists as well as others who have only a general interest in the subject.

Book Radiopharmaceuticals and Brain Pathophysiology Studied with Pet and Spect

Download or read book Radiopharmaceuticals and Brain Pathophysiology Studied with Pet and Spect written by M. Diksic and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, this book covers three major areas essential to in vivo biochemical studies with PET and SPECT: synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals, biological modeling, and clinical applications. The book emphasizes advances in the synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals used in PET and SPECT studies of brain flow and oxidatative metabolism, in addition to biological modeling. The most widely used 2-deoxyglucose/2-fluorodeoxyglucose models are discussed, as well as models used in the quantitation of brain receptors. Other topics include a possible model for converting 6-[18F] fluorodopa images into the quantitative rate of dopamine synthesis, evaluations of technetium- and iodine-labeled blood flow tracers, and possibilities for using SPECT to measure other pathophysiological variables. This book will be a valuable reference source to students and specialists interested in these in vivo measurements.

Book Science and Technology in the Global Cold War

Download or read book Science and Technology in the Global Cold War written by Naomi Oreskes and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations of how the global Cold War shaped national scientific and technological practices in fields from biomedicine to rocket science. The Cold War period saw a dramatic expansion of state-funded science and technology research. Government and military patronage shaped Cold War technoscientific practices, imposing methods that were project oriented, team based, and subject to national-security restrictions. These changes affected not just the arms race and the space race but also research in agriculture, biomedicine, computer science, ecology, meteorology, and other fields. This volume examines science and technology in the context of the Cold War, considering whether the new institutions and institutional arrangements that emerged globally constrained technoscientific inquiry or offered greater opportunities for it. The contributors find that whatever the particular science, and whatever the political system in which that science was operating, the knowledge that was produced bore some relation to the goals of the nation-state. These goals varied from nation to nation; weapons research was emphasized in the United States and the Soviet Union, for example, but in France and China scientific independence and self-reliance dominated. The contributors also consider to what extent the changes to science and technology practices in this era were produced by the specific politics, anxieties, and aspirations of the Cold War. Contributors Elena Aronova, Erik M. Conway, Angela N. H. Creager, David Kaiser, John Krige, Naomi Oreskes, George Reisch, Sigrid Schmalzer, Sonja D. Schmid, Matthew Shindell, Asif A. Siddiqi, Zuoyue Wang, Benjamin Wilson
