Book Fine scale Spatial Organization of Face and Limb selective Regions in Human High level Visual Cortex

Download or read book Fine scale Spatial Organization of Face and Limb selective Regions in Human High level Visual Cortex written by Kevin Sean Weiner and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurophysiology and optical imaging studies in monkeys and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in both monkeys and humans have localized clustered neural responses in high-level visual cortex selective for images of biologically relevant categories such as faces and limbs. Implementing higher resolution (1.5mm voxels) fMRI scanning methods than prior studies (3-5mm voxels), the results reported in this dissertation illustrate a topographic organization of face- and limb-selective regions in adjacent and alternating clusters in both ventral temporal and lateral occipitotemporal cortices. Region of interest analyses in a series of experiments indicate distinct category and position sensitivities within these clusters and multivoxel pattern analyses indicate different amounts of information in highly-, weakly-, and non-selective voxels for these categories. These results mediate the debate between modular and distributed theories of high-level visual cortex, as well as support a novel, sparsely-distributed organization including both locally clustered and distributed elements for face and limb representations. These results also reveal two new basic organization principles of high-level visual cortex where there is both a consistency in the anatomical location of functional regions, as well as a preserved spatial relationship among functional regions. Employing these two principles enables the first framework for consistent parcellation of high-level visual regions outside of retinotopic cortex. Importantly, this framework can also be applied to other sensory and nonsensory cortical systems.

Book Niedermeyer s Electroencephalography

Download or read book Niedermeyer s Electroencephalography written by Donald L. Schomer and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2012-10-18 with total page 1308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading reference on electroencephalography since 1982, Niedermeyer's Electroencephalography is now in its thoroughly updated Sixth Edition. An international group of experts provides comprehensive coverage of the neurophysiologic and technical aspects of EEG, evoked potentials, and magnetoencephalography, as well as the clinical applications of these studies in neonates, infants, children, adults, and older adults. This edition's new lead editor, Donald Schomer, MD, has updated the technical information and added a major new chapter on artifacts. Other highlights include complete coverage of EEG in the intensive care unit and new chapters on integrating other recording devices with EEG; transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation; EEG/TMS in evaluation of cognitive and mood disorders; and sleep in premature infants, children and adolescents, and the elderly. A companion website includes fully searchable text and image bank.

Book excerpt: Immense strides in furthering our understanding of a variety of underlying mechanisms involved in visual perception are continuously being made, however numerous questions in the field remain unanswered. Detailed here are two studies aimed at elucidating the functional processes in which the human visual system integrates visual stimuli into cohesive representations of the world around us. First, using simulations and fMRI experiments we examined how retinotopic mapping paradigms can be optimized to most efficaciously and accurately measure the underlying functional and organizational properties of early to mid-level visual cortex in both healthy and clinical populations. We focused on quantitatively comparing two common retinotopic mapping designs in terms of measurable and achievable signal-to-noise ratios under various conditions such as exogenous noise and scanning time. While multifocal retinotopy can yield a higher signal-to-noise ratio in primary visual cortex, we find that the phase-encoded technique provides qualitatively better retinotopic maps despite having a less robust point-to-point correspondence of visual field location to visual cortex. Other implications of employing these methods are also discussed. Next, fMRI experiments aimed at uncovering the spatial frequency tuning profiles of higher-level, category selective areas of cortex such as the parahippocampal place area (PPA), retrospenial cortex (RSC), occipital place area (OPA), lateral occipital cortex (LOC) and the fusiform face area (FFA) were performed. These experiments utilized both frequency filtered scenes belonging to four different categories along with unstructured stimuli of various spatial frequencies. Results from univariate, multivariate and searchlight analyses are subsequently provided and elaborated on, with the general finding that the category selective areas mentioned above are sensitive to high spatial frequencies, especially when semantic information is present.

Book Low level Visual Cortex and Motion Perception

Download or read book Low level Visual Cortex and Motion Perception written by Nicolas Wotawa and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of cerebral imaging technologies combined with specific image processing algorithms contribute to improving our knowledge of the brain functioning, in particular regarding visual perception. This thesis contributes to current understanding implied in visual motion perception in humans, based on complementary information brought by different Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) modalities. The first part of this work focuses on functional MRI (fMRI) identification of low-level visual areas. We detail the fMRI retinotopic mapping procedure we developed, from the stimulus design to the final anatomo-functional analysis. A specific functional localization of the hMT/V5+ complex is also obtained with a block design. These methods, optimized according to some stimulation parameters, allow the extraction of individually defined and homogeneous Regions Of Interest (ROI). In the second part, we characterize functionally these previously identified low-level visual areas. Based on the recent fMR-Adaptation paradigm, which allows to investigate the sensitivity of a cortical region to quantitative variations of a given feature, we demonstrate a functional differentiation across areas regarding their relative sensitivity to visual direction of motion. Lastly, we combine fMRI and Diffusion Tensor MRI (DTI) to study the anatomical connectivity within the low-level visual cortex. Based on state of the art white matter fibers mapping algorithms, this characterization gives insights on the network of areas implied, among others, in visual motion processing.
