Download or read book Rural Resources and Local Livelihoods in Africa written by NA NA and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Top scholars examine issues which lead readers to better understand environmental change in the African continent and its effects on rural African livelihoods. Each of the studies in this book concerns four main issues: conservation, biodiversity, and environment; land use and livelihoods; environmental change; and policies for conservation and development. The volume looks closely at the details of rural resource use, access and control, the social institutions which shape this, and the effects on African environments. It is not possible to understand livelihoods in Africa - a central issue for all social and economic questions - without grasping the interplay between environmental change and the sustainability of rural livelihoods. The volume is groundbreaking in its detailed examination of this interplay, and its importance in grasping the roots of poverty and potential for its alleviation, and for its unique combination of natural and social science methods.

Book New Frontiers in Natural Resources Management in Africa

Download or read book New Frontiers in Natural Resources Management in Africa written by Elias T. Ayuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses policy strategies for the effective management of natural resources in Africa within the context of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). While natural resource wealth has the potential to lift many out of poverty, sustain economic growth, and foster political stability, it does not guarantee these benefits. The absolute levels of human development in many resource-rich countries remain low, despite their apparent wealth. The challenge is to adopt policies that better harness the potential of natural resources, not only as an opportunity for development, but also to foster policies and institutional innovations that manage resource wealth equitably and boost human capital. To this end, this volume highlights key opportunities and solutions for harnessing natural resources for sustained economic development and explain how such approaches should be incorporated into the SDG agenda. These opportunities are communicated in the form of policy recommendations that in some cases, are country specific but can (and should) be adapted by individual African countries where applicable. With a broad perspective supplied by a diverse group of authors, this book will be useful for graduate students and academicians studying Africa, development economics, economic policy, and resource management, as well as policy makers, NGOs, and IGOs.

Book Natural Resource Management in West Africa

Download or read book Natural Resource Management in West Africa written by Floris Pol and published by Kit Pub. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable use of natural resources is a key element in the livelihoods of rural people. Especially the poor are often disproportionately affected by environmental degradation: it loosens their production base, makes them vulnerable to health risks, and can result in natural or man-made disasters. Sharing and accumulation of knowledge are important to help rural people make better decisions. This bulletin presents four examples on how projects and organisations in Western Africa deal with the knowledge aspects and capacity development in land resource management. With the ongoing processes of democratic decentralisation and privatisation, more and more actors are expected to play their role in sustainable resource management. The fragmented landscape of actors has huge consequences for the ways knowledge can be developed and shared. The bulletin analyses the examples and draws lessons with respect to the opportunities for knowledge sharing and capacity development. What are key ingredients for a knowledge management strategy? Strategic questions are identified that need attention in policy development both for donor agencies and governments in the region. We conclude that knowledge management is not easy to implement in the current multi-stakeholder context.
