Book The History of Fort St Joseph

Download or read book The History of Fort St Joseph written by Graeme Mount and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2000-01-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1812, as the British and the Americans were on the brink of war in North America, Fort St. Joseph was not thought to be of much importance to the British cause. It was disregarded as a useless, poorly located post. But when war was delcared, the garrison at Fort St. Joseph pulled off a miracle: it captured the American Fort Mackinac, and for the remainder of the War of 1812 the British never relinquished control of the Upper Great Lakes. Built in the aftermath of the American Revolution, Fort St. joseph played an important role in the defence of Canada. And yet, when the war ended, the fort was abandoned, and almost forgotten. However, there were those who could not forget the heroics of 1812. They sought to restore the memory of the fort that was part of one of the defining moments in Canadian history. Determined individuals campaigned for government assistance and public support. Their efforts have paid off: since the 1960s, St. Joseph Island and the site of the fort have been revived as tourist destinations, and there are high hopes for an even greater tribute to the legacy of the fort and its soldiers.

Book The Frances Smith

Download or read book The Frances Smith written by Scott L. Cameron and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2005-08-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frances Smith was not only the first steamboat to be built in Owen Sound, but also the largest vessel on Georgian Bay at that time. By far the most luxurious vessel to sail the Upper Great Lakes from a Canadian port, she was known as a "palace steamer." In the mid-to-late-19th century, the Frances Smith set the standard for speed, spacious accommodation and quality service on Georgian Bay and Lake Superior. The story of the Frances Smith, full of adventure and courageous actions, and even including disreputable behaviour, is a genuine story of life on the Great Lakes in the latter part of the 1800s. Meticulously researched and documented by Scott L. Cameron, this book is an exploration of a special part of our past that will be of great interest to history buffs in general, and maritime historians in particular.

Book The Canadian Labour Movement

Download or read book The Canadian Labour Movement written by Craig Heron and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Canadian Labour Movement, historian Craig Heron and political scientist Charles Smith tell the story of Canada's workers from the midnineteenth century through to today, painting a vivid picture of key developments, such as the birth of craft unionism, the breakthroughs of the fifties and sixties, and the setbacks of the early twenty-first century. The fourth edition of this book has been completely updated with a substantial new chapter that covers the period from the great recession of 2008 through to 2020. In this chapter, Smith describes the fallout of the financial crisis, how Stephen Harper's government restricted labour rights, the rise of the "gig economy" and precarious work, and the continued de-industrialization in the private sector. These pressures contributed to fracturing the movement, as when Unifor, the largest private sector union, split from the Canadian Labour Congress, the established "house of labour." Through it all, rank-and-file union members have fought for better conditions for all workers, including through campaigns like the fight for a $15 minimum wage. The Canadian Labour Movement is the definitive book for anyone interested in understanding the origins, achievements, and challenges of the labour and social justice movements in Canada.

Book Sault Ste Marie and Beyond a History of Its People 17th 21st Centuries

Download or read book Sault Ste Marie and Beyond a History of Its People 17th 21st Centuries written by Sandra Rousseau and published by Awaken Ink Incorporated. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History, as it happened, on both sides of the turbulent rapids at the Sault, dividing a settlement into two countries. In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and southern Lake Superior, historical characters tell their stories in their own words: the Anishinaabe defeating the destructive Iroquois; the travels and determination of the Jesuit priests; Alexander Henry's adventures from Mackinac Island to Lake Superior; fur traders with Indigenous wives evolving into a new culture. This book explores the culture of the Anishinaabe homeland; French fur trade commerce; entrepreneurs' shipbuilding and copper mining; war declared by the Americans; Canada rescued by its Indigenous neighbours; and religious encroachment. Ultimately, creating a vibrant Sault Ste. Marie. Tim C. Review of Sault Ste. Marie and Beyond I just completed this wonderful book and thoroughly enjoyed it! The descriptions of life over the centuries through the eyes of the voyageurs, coureurs des bois, merchants, and indigenous participants and their shaping of early Canada (and the USA for that matter) really made the history come alive for me and expanded my point of view. And to think this knowledge was imparted to me by a person related to the great Tecumseh! I particularly liked the fact that you included historic paintings and pictures in the text. This added a lot to my ability to imagine the scenes of the time. I also learned about the Sault, an area of which I knew little. You are a great ambassador for the City! Finally, the best quote of the book in my mind: from Elder Willard Pine " there are no bad people, only bad choices ."
