The collection provides almost 30 years of data and information crucial to the understanding of U.S. coastal management and NOAA's mission to sustain healthy coasts. This is one of their documents.

Book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply

Download or read book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, New York City adopted a mammoth watershed agreement to protect its drinking water and avoid filtration of its large upstate surface water supply. Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens. Other recommendations, which are broadly applicable to surface water supplies across the country, target buffer zones, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and effluent trading.

Book Nonpoint Source Pollution

Download or read book Nonpoint Source Pollution written by Sanjay Jeer and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater is one of our nation's most precious resources. Not only do we drink it, but we water food with it and use it for recreation. However, it is being threatened by nonpoint source pollution. Nonpoint source pollution is caused by water collecting pollutants on or in the ground as it migrates to lakes, rivers, or aquifers. In the worst case, the water becomes completely unusable. The authors begin by explaining the hydrologic cycle in minute detail. Because it is difficult to understand the paths of pollution without first understanding the paths of water, figures assure that the reader understands the termonology and concepts behind the science. The authors describe different ways water may become contaminated. They explain the consequences and characteristics of different types of pollution. The report presents four case studies of cities that confronted their pollution problems. Each study illustrates the success that awaits cities and towns that embrace pollution control. A small glossary and ordinance language complete the book. It's filled with figures and photos. The material is accessible to all interested citizens, not just planners or scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pollution from nonpoint sources-such as runoff from farms or construction sites-remains the leading cause of impairment to the nation's waters. Under section 319 of the Clean Water Act, each year EPA provides grants to states to implement programs and fund projects that address nonpoint source pollution; the program received $165 million in fiscal year 2012. Section 319 includes minimum conditions that states must meet to receive grants. By regulation, EPA's 10 regional offices oversee state programs and are to ensure that states' projects can be feasibly implemented. USDA also has programs to protect water resources.GAO examined (1) states' experiences in funding projects that address nonpoint source pollution, (2) the extent to which EPA oversees the section 319 program and measures its effectiveness, and (3) the extent to which key agricultural programs complement EPA efforts to control such pollution. GAO surveyed project managers, reviewed information from EPA's 10 regional offices on oversight of state programs, and analyzed USDA data."
