Book Load Interaction Effects on Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 6Al 4V Alloy

Download or read book Load Interaction Effects on Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti 6Al 4V Alloy written by Robert Peh-ying Wei and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of delay, retardation in the rate of fatigue crack growth, produced by load interactions in variable amplitude loading, on the accurate prediction of fatigue lives of engineering structures is discussed. The effects of a broad range of loading variables on delay in fatigue crack growth at room temperature are examined for a mill annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The results are used to estimate crack growth behavior under programmed loads.

Book Fatigue Crack Propagation and Load Interaction Effects in a Titanium Alloy

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation and Load Interaction Effects in a Titanium Alloy written by JM. Larsen and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of load interaction effects in Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zn-2Mo is presented. Simple variable amplitude loading spectra were applied to test samples, and the crack propagation stress intensity factor, KPR, was subsequently measured. The data were condensed to two equations ("master curves") that describe the influence of an unloading cycle after constant amplitude loading and a single overload cycle, respectively. The results suggest that load interaction effects are caused by residual compressive stresses ahead of the crack front, whereas the influence of crack closure is minor.

Book Load and Environment Interactions in Fatigue Crack Growth

Download or read book Load and Environment Interactions in Fatigue Crack Growth written by T. T. Shih and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influences of environment on delay and on fatigue crack growth under programmed loading were examined for a mill annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Test environments included dehumidified argon, air (with 30-60% relative humidity), distilled water, and 3.5% NaCl solution. The effects of load sequence and block size on fatigue under programmed loads were investigated also. Experimental results show that the mildly aggressive environments (atmospheric moisture and distilled water) have little effect on delay. Salt solution, on the other hand, has a significant effect on delay and on crack growth under programmed loading; the effect on delay being dependent on frequency or hold-time. Both load sequence and block size can significantly alter fatigue life under programmed loading. The need for further fundamental understanding of load and environment interactions in fatigue is discussed. (Modified author abstract).

Book Variable Amplitude Fatigue Crack Growth in Titanium Alloy Ti 4Al 4Mo 2Sn 0 5Si IMI 550

Download or read book Variable Amplitude Fatigue Crack Growth in Titanium Alloy Ti 4Al 4Mo 2Sn 0 5Si IMI 550 written by C. M. Ward-Close and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been made of fatigue crack growth behaviour in the titanium alloy (Ti-4Al-4Mo-2Sn-0.5Si) (IMI 550)), subject to single tensile overloads and the FALSTAFF flight simulation loading spectrum. Fatigue overloads were found to produce crack growth rate acceleration, followed by delayed retardation. The transient changes in crack growth rates were associated with large changes in crack closure immediately behind the crack tip. For both single overloads and flight simulation loading, the greatest load-interaction effects were at the lowest load amplitudes. Microstructure had only a slight influence on load-interaction effects associated with single tensile overloads. Great Britain. (jes).

Book Fatigue Crack Growth and Crack Closure Behavior of Ti 6Al 4V Alloy Under Variable Amplitude Loadings

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth and Crack Closure Behavior of Ti 6Al 4V Alloy Under Variable Amplitude Loadings written by M. Jono and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth tests under constant-amplitude and repeated two-step loadings were carried out on a (? + ?) Ti-6Al-4V alloy which has duplex structure made up of equiaxed primary ?-phase grains with a discontinuous fine ?-phase dispersed in the boundaries. It was found that fatigue crack grew along ?-phase grain boundaries and that the fracture surface was very rough in the low stress intensity region under constant-amplitude loading. On the other hand, in the high region, transgranular crack growth was observed and the fracture surface was relatively smooth. The crack opening point, Kop, was affected by the amplitude of low-level load, ?KL, under repeated two-step loadings where the high-level load amplitude was kept constant. Kop was found to be higher than that predicted by Kop -- Kmax relationship under constant-amplitude loading and the fracture surface was rougher in comparison with that under constant-amplitude loading which has the identical stress intensity range. It was concluded that the crack opening point was controlled by both plasticity-induced crack closure in terms ofKmax and roughness-induced crack closure resulted from rougher surface in ?KL.

Book Load Interaction Effects on Fatigue Crack Growth in A514F Steel Alloy

Download or read book Load Interaction Effects on Fatigue Crack Growth in A514F Steel Alloy written by RW. Hertzberg and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variable-amplitude fatigue tests of A514F steel alloy were performed within a linear-elastic fracture mechanics framework in order to characterize the retardation response of a cyclic strain softening material. Results of single and multiple overload tests on A514F steel alloy suggested that a material's cyclic properties have little effect on the phenomenology of retardation behavior. For instance, single high load excursions (of different magnitudes and at different baseline ?K levels) in this cyclic strain softening alloy caused fatigue crack growth rate retardation trends comparable to those exhibited by 2024-T3 aluminum, a cyclic strain hardening alloy. In addition, under complex loading conditions, the A514F steel alloy, like the 2024-T3 aluminum alloy, exhibited maximum interaction between single peak load excursions when two peak cycles were separated by a small distance.

Book On Load interaction Effects in Fatigue Crack Propagation

Download or read book On Load interaction Effects in Fatigue Crack Propagation written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic investigation has been carried out on the mechanisms of the retardation in fatigue crack propagation following either a single overload or a large number of multiple overloads. The results from A1 alloy 6061-T6 and 9Cr-2Mo steel confirmed the observation by Paris and Hermann that during the period of retarded fatigue crack growth subsequent to the application of a single overload, two instead of only one crack opening levels exist.

Book Influence of Metallurgical Factors on the Fatigue Crack Growth Rate in Alpha Beta Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Influence of Metallurgical Factors on the Fatigue Crack Growth Rate in Alpha Beta Titanium Alloys written by J. C. Chesnutt and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research was conducted on two alpha-beta titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-2Sn 4Zr-6Mo, as a function of alloy composition microstructure and strength level, environment, and fatigue loading conditions. A wide range of microstructural conditions, seven for Ti-6Al-4V and three for Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo, was chosen to provide a full range of constituent types and morphologies and a range of mechanical properties. All the material for the program was obtained in the form of pancake forgings which were uniformly and weakly textured. The initial portion of the program consisted of material characterization and base line fatigue crack propagation (FCP) testing. Characterization included a full description of microstructures, as well as mechanical property testing, fracture toughness tests, S-N curve determination and measurement of other properties such as modulus and texture. Base line FCP testing in dry air at two stress ratios (R) of 0.1 and 0.3; and in a 3.5% NaCl solution at 1 and 20 Hz was conducted in this portion of the program. Results of this study included the determination that transformed beta microstructures generally exhibit the greatest fatigue crack propagation resistance and that increasing the load ration, R, can lead to significant increases in crack growth rate; the behavior in both cases was rationalized in terms of crack tip interaction with microstructural constituents.
