Book excerpt: When Death is present in a household on a Christmas Day, the very contrast between the time as it now is, and the day as it has often been, gives a poignancy to sorrow--a more utter blankness to the desolation. James Leigh died just as the far-away bells of Rochdale Church were ringing for morning service on Christmas Day, 1836.

Contents include two appendixes of new editions of Gaskell's works in print and digital, audio, and video formats; a selection of websites; citations of many brief articles in the Gaskell Newsletter that are generally ignored in standard indexes; numerous sources that would otherwise be difficult to locate; and an author and subject index."--Quatrième de couverture

Book Family and Society in the Works of Elizabeth Gaskell

Download or read book Family and Society in the Works of Elizabeth Gaskell written by Elizabeth Holly Pike and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of Elizabeth Gaskell's fiction have concentrated on her «social problem novels, » with some attention being given to her «comic novels» as a separate body of work. This analysis of Gaskell's fiction argues that these seemingly disparate works deal with the same theme: the proper constitution of society. Through a discussion of nineteenth-century ideas about social structures and an examination of Gaskell's major works, this study traces the change in Gaskell's conception of the ideal structure of society and shows her development as a realist novelist.

Book Between North and South

Download or read book Between North and South written by Emily Wharton Sinkler and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Wharton, a Philadelphian, in 1842 married Charles Sinkler, a midshipman in the US Navy. Sinkler took his 19-year-old wife to live among his family, wealthy cotton planters outside Charleston, SC. For much of her married life Emily traveled between the two places; her letters, edited by her great-great-granddaughter (a librarian at the U. of Tennessee), were retrieved from the attics of relatives Northern and Southern. LeClercq sees her forebear as a pioneer of sorts, adapting well to the rural, antebellum South--a paternalistic society where opportunities for women were circumscribed--while also thriving in cosmopolitan Philadelphia and endearing herself to the people whose lives she touched in both worlds. c. Book Music in The Girl s Own Paper An Annotated Catalogue 1880 1910

Download or read book Music in The Girl s Own Paper An Annotated Catalogue 1880 1910 written by Judith Barger and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century British periodicals for girls and women offer a wealth of material to understand how girls and women fit into their social and cultural worlds, of which music making was an important part. The Girl's Own Paper, first published in 1880, stands out because of its rich musical content. Keeping practical usefulness as a research tool and as a guide to further reading in mind, Judith Barger has catalogued the musical content found in the weekly and later monthly issues during the magazine's first thirty years, in music scores, instalments of serialized fiction about musicians, music-related nonfiction, poetry with a musical title or theme, illustrations depicting music making and replies to musical correspondents. The book's introductory chapter reveals how content in The Girl's Own Paper changed over time to reflect a shift in women's music making from a female accomplishment to an increasingly professional role within the discipline, using 'the piano girl' as a case study. A comparison with musical content found in The Boy's Own Paper over the same time span offers additional insight into musical content chosen for the girls' magazine. A user's guide precedes the chronological annotated catalogue; the indexes that follow reveal the magazine's diversity of approach to the subject of music.
