Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Titus Livius' Roman History: Translated Into English, and Illustrated With Notes, Critical, Historical and Geographical, for the Use of Students in Humanity In the study of history there is this peculiar advantage There you have examples of every kind set before you, in a conspicuous point of view; whence you may set up models for your imitation, as an individual or a state, or beacons to warn you against base attempts, which end in disgrace. But either I am prepossessed in favour of the work I have undertaken, or there never was a state more respectable for its greatness, its sanctity, or variety of excellent characters. Never was there into which luxury and avarice found their way nor where poverty and frugality were held so long and so much in re te, that the less they had, the less they desired. Of te years, riches have introduced luxury, soda profusion of pleasures, a taste for extravagance in all the ways of riot and debauchery: but as complaints will not even then be agreeable, when perhaps they are necessary, let us at least drop them in the introduction to so great a work, or rather, were it fashionable with us histdrians, as it is with the poets, set out with more eniivening ideas, with good omens, and vows, and prayers to the gods and goddesses, that they would vouchsafe to-grant success, adequate to the greatness of the undertaking. Book Livy Ab urbe condita Book XXII

Download or read book Livy Ab urbe condita Book XXII written by John Briscoe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Livy's Ab urbe condita Book XXII narrates Hannibal's massive defeats of the Romans at Trasimene (217 BC) and Cannae (216 BC). It is Livy's best and most dramatic book, and the one most likely to appeal to students at every level. Livy drew on the Greek historian Polybius, but transformed his drier treatment into a rhetorical masterpiece, which by a series of insistent thematic contrasts brings out the tensions between the delaying tactics of Fabius and the costly rashness of Flaminius, Minucius and Varro. A substantial and accessibly written introduction by two experienced commentators covers historical, religious, literary and linguistic matters, including the place of Book XXII in the structure of Livy's long work. A new text by Briscoe is followed by a full commentary, covering literary and historical aspects and offering frequent help with translation. The volume is suitable for undergraduates, graduate students, teachers, and scholars.

  • ISBN : 9780674997394
  • Pages : pages

Download or read book History of Rome written by Livy and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Livy (Titus Livius), the great Roman historian, was born at Patavium (Padua) in 64 or 59 BC, where after years in Rome he died in AD 12 or 17. Livy's history, composed as the imperial autocracy of Augustus was replacing the republican system that had stood for over 500 years, presents in splendid style a vivid narrative of Rome's rise from the traditional foundation of the city in 753 or 751 BC to 9 BC and illustrates the collective and individual virtues necessary to achieve and maintain such greatness. Of its 142 books, conventionally divided into pentads and decads, we have 1-10 and 21-45 complete, and short summaries (periochae) of all the rest except 41 and 43-45; 11-20 are lost, and of the rest only fragments and the summaries remain. The fourth decad comprises two recognizable pentads: Books 31-35 narrate the Second Macedonian War (200-196) and its aftermath, then Books 36-40 the years from 191 to 180, when Rome crushed and shrank Antiochus' empire to extend and consolidate her mastery over the Hellenistic states. This edition replaces the original Loeb edition by Evan T. Sage [and] offers a text based on Briscoe's edition, a fresh translation, and ample annotation fully current with modern scholarship."--
