Book Living With A Lighter Load

Download or read book Living With A Lighter Load written by Susan Whisnand and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-01-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Living with a Lighter Load is the same as reading my diary. The kind of diary that has a lock and key and no one is allowed to see what is inside. But there isn’t a lock and key on this book. I have removed them, and I am inviting you to peek inside and have a look at my personal story. The story of my life isn’t profound, tragic, or extraordinary. It is not something to make a big deal over. But, it’s underneath the events of my story that reveal the diary-like emotions and thoughts that are very private to me. It’s where my frustration from struggles are experienced, heart piercing pain of loss is felt, defeat of mistakes overwhelms, shame from sin takes over, fear from a bad experience is absorbed, and sadness from disappointment sinks in. It’s these emotions and thoughts of mine that I reveal and share with you. Why do I reveal what is underneath the experiences of my life? Because I have learned a life lesson that is worth getting out of my diary and into an open book. I have learned that I don’t have to lug the heavy weight that the struggles of life put upon my emotions and thoughts. I have learned to live with a lighter load and how to keep it light. Since I am no longer straining to pull the weight, I have wider eyes to see more of life’s abundance and richness. And what I see makes me too happy to keep stored in my diary and all to myself. - Sue Marvin -------- ---------

Book Living and Loving in the Age of AIDS

Download or read book Living and Loving in the Age of AIDS written by Derek Frost and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the tale of a devastating pandemic, of lives cut painfully short; it's also a love letter. Derek, a distinguished designer and J, his husband, a pioneering entrepreneur and creator of both The Embassy Club, London’s answer to Studio 54, and iconic Heaven, Europe’s largest gay discotheque, met and fell in love more than 40 years ago. Their lives were high-octane, full of adventure, fun and fearless creativity. Suddenly their friends began to get sick and die – AIDS had arrived in their lives. When they got tested, J received what was then a death sentence: he was HIV Positive. While the onset of AIDS strengthened stigma and fear globally, they confronted their personal crisis with courage, humour and an indomitable resolve to survive. J’s battle lasted six long years. Turning to spiritual reflection, yoga, nature – and always to love – Derek describes a transformation of the spirit, how compassion and empathy rose phoenix-like from the flames of sickness and death. Out of this transformation also came Aids Ark, the charity they founded, which helped to save, amongst the world’s most marginalised people, more than 1,000 HIV Positive lives. This is a story of joy and triumph; about facing universal challenges; about the great rewards that come from giving back. Derek speaks for a generation who lived through a global health crisis that many in society refused even to acknowledge. His is a powerful story chronicling this extraordinary time.

Book Living without the Dead

    Book Details:
  • Author : Piers Vitebsky
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2017-10-19
  • ISBN : 022640787X
  • Pages : 397 pages

Download or read book Living without the Dead written by Piers Vitebsky and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just one generation ago, the Sora tribe in India lived in a world populated by the spirits of their dead, who spoke to them through shamans in trance. Every day, they negotiated their wellbeing in heated arguments or in quiet reflections on their feelings of love, anger, and guilt. Today, young Sora are rejecting the worldview of their ancestors and switching their allegiance to warring sects of fundamentalist Christianity or Hinduism. Communion with ancestors is banned as sacred sites are demolished, female shamans are replaced by male priests, and debate with the dead gives way to prayer to gods. For some, this shift means liberation from jungle spirits through literacy, employment, and democratic politics; others despair for fear of being forgotten after death. How can a society abandon one understanding of reality so suddenly and see the world in a totally different way? Over forty years, anthropologist Piers Vitebsky has shared the lives of shamans, pastors, ancestors, gods, policemen, missionaries, and alphabet worshippers, seeking explanations from social theory, psychoanalysis, and theology. Living without the Dead lays bare today’s crisis of indigenous religions and shows how historical reform can bring new fulfillments—but also new torments and uncertainties. Vitebsky explores the loss of the Sora tradition as one for greater humanity: just as we have been losing our wildernesses, so we have been losing a diverse range of cultural and spiritual possibilities, tribe by tribe. From the award-winning author of The Reindeer People, this is a heartbreaking story of cultural change and the extinction of an irreplaceable world, even while new religious forms come into being to take its place.

Book Too Fast to Live Too Young to Die

Download or read book Too Fast to Live Too Young to Die written by Keith Elliot Greenberg and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die, readers take an evocative journey with author Keith Elliot Greenberg as he pieces together the puzzle of James Dean's final day and its everlasting impact. Greenberg travels to Dean's hometown to talk with folks who knew the star, and all the way to the California roads that underlay the tires of the actor's infamous Porsche Spyder. Taking the story back and forth in time, Greenberg gives insight into what drove Dean to live on the edge – the early loss of his mother, his relentless drive to explore for the sake of his craft. Dean once said, “Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today.” He lived to experience, and the one love that compared to his love of acting was his love of racing cars. Greenberg puts the event in historical context, reflecting on the world Dean lived in at the time, an era after World War II, the end of the Korean War, the advent of rock and roll, with the sixties coming down the pike. The star's too-soon departure froze him as a symbol of American Cool, and as proven by the 20 000 people who return to Dean's grave each year to pay homage, a major influence on youth culture for myriad generations. With fresh interviews with insiders, riveting storytelling, and acute attention to details – from vehicle specs to Dean's stops along the way (including for an ominous speeding ticket) to how the news reached the world – Greenberg delivers a thoughtful look at this historical moment.
