Book Living Up to a Legend

Download or read book Living Up to a Legend written by Diana Bishop and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2017-02-25 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diana Bishop recounts growing up in the shadow of her famous grandfather, Canadian First World War flying ace Billy Bishop. As a child, Diana Bishop showed up one day at school with a brown paper bag. Inside was a large breastplate of some of the most precious war medals on the planet, including the Victoria Cross. They belonged to Canada’s most celebrated First World War pilot, Billy Bishop, and until her family donated them to the Canadian War Museum, they had been kept in her father’s underwear drawer. That day at school was the first time Diana realized she was not growing up in an ordinary family. Now, after more than two decades in Canadian media, Diana Bishop looks back on her grandfather’s legacy and its profound influence over her life, and also her father’s — the only son of Billy Bishop, who had so much to live up to. Living Up to a Legend is a unique memoir that covers Billy Bishop’s legacy through the eyes of one of the people who it affected the most.

Book The Legend Hunter

Download or read book The Legend Hunter written by Romain Wilhelmsen and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1533 Francisco Pizarro made his epic march through the deserts and mountains of Peru. He was on his way to the golden city of the Inca, Cuzco. He bypassed empires that had long since been buried in the sands and in the memories of forgotten civilizations. He found his gold, all right, but he passed over much more that has yet to be found. Romain Wilhelmsen, against the advice of the National Geographical Society, set out to track down those legends and riches that the Conquistadors missed. This is part of his story. And, it is a success story. Starting out with $800 in his pocket, not only did he find gold, but he also encountered the fascinating personalities that aided him in his search: Ernesto Batanero, who had plotted the Pan-Am air routes in the 1930s over Ecuador and Peru, and dreamed of retracing them on the ground in search of pyramids he knew were down there; Miguel Loayza, who was wanted by the governments of the United States, Peru, Ecuador, and the United Kingdom for the genocidal murder of thousands of Indians; Santiago Flynn who gave up a promising motion picture career for the solitude of the Andes Mountains; Hermann Becker who had been the legendary Field Marshal Erin Rommel's personal driver during World War II; Father Trampa, S.J., who pointed the way to a lost army of Spanish Conquistadors in the Sierra Madre Canyons of Mexico; the lovely foreign correspondent, Barbara Holbrook, who exposed a corrupt government and was on the run, one step ahead of the militia; the philosopher who wanted to go sailing on the last commercial windjammer in the world, and ended up on an island of manure. These, and others are here in THE LEGEND HUNTER.

Book Arthurian Legend in the Twentieth and Twenty first Centuries

Download or read book Arthurian Legend in the Twentieth and Twenty first Centuries written by Susan Austin and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King Arthur we imagine did not exist in history. He is the result of stories told and retold, changed and added to by storytellers for centuries, each making the story reflect the storyteller’s time and values. The chapters in this book look at movies, manga, comic books, a television show, and traditional books released since 1960 to explore some of the ways King Arthur has been reimagined in the past 60 years. Interpreting Avalon High and The Kind Who Would Be King, Camelot 3000 and King Arthur vs. Dracula, Fate/Zero, John Steinbeck’s The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights, the influence of Arthurian legend on Harry Potter, Terry Gilliam’s The Fisher King, John Boorman’s Excalibur, Jerry Zucker’s First Knight, Antoine Fuqua’s King Arthur, Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword, Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, Iris Murdoch’s The Time of the Angels, and the BBC series Merlin, the authors find that while we are still interested in the idea of King Arthur, we may also want his story to be more racially and gender inclusive, less elitist, and in some cases, more secular.

Book The Legend of Veronica in Early Modern Art

Download or read book The Legend of Veronica in Early Modern Art written by Katherine T. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Legend of Veronica in Early Modern Art, Katherine T. Brown explores the lore of the apocryphal character of Veronica and the history of the “true image” relic as factors in the Franciscans’ placement of her character into the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) as the Sixth Station, in both Jerusalem and Western Europe, around the turn of the fifteenth century. Katherine T. Brown examines how the Franciscans adopted and adapted the legend of Veronica to meet their own evangelical goals by intervening in the fabric of Jerusalem to incorporate her narrative − which is not found in the Gospels − into an urban path constructed for pilgrims, as well as in similar participatory installations in churchyards and naves across Western Europe. This book proposes plausible reasons for the subsequent proliferation of works of art depicting Veronica, both within and independent of the Stations of the Cross, from the early fifteenth through the mid-seventeenth centuries. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, theology, and medieval and Renaissance studies.
