Book Living Spiritually in the Material World

Download or read book Living Spiritually in the Material World written by Lewis M. Andrews Ph.D. and published by Fidelis Books. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost three hundred years, almost every American college was run by a minister or prominent Christian thinker. Although representing many denominations, they collectively developed an enormously popular student seminar on how to find spiritual satisfaction in the larger world beyond home and church—a discipline that eventually inspired the entire country through a series of bestselling books. Combining historical research with the insights of modern psychology and his own experience as therapist and teacher, Dr. Andrews makes the insights of the early college president assessable to today’s Christian seekers. “Before shelves were warping under the weight of self-help books, before the caring industries were promising happiness via therapy or pills, many Americans sought guidance and wisdom from—of all people—Christian college presidents. Lewis Andrews unearths the story of how these religious, educational, and social leaders came to be spiritual instructors, and he shows how their advice can still help us lead lives of greater courage, resilience, and grace.”—Adam Keiper, Books & Arts editor, The Weekly Standard “Living Spiritually in the Material World is a surprising and delightful book. Lewis Andrews has done us a great service by discovering and reflecting on classic insights that will help us, even today, to live with spiritual meaning in our everyday lives.” —Dr. Mark Roberts, executive director, Max De Pree Center for Leadership, Fuller Theological Seminary “Few appreciate the connection between higher education and the higher authority of the divine, but now comes Lewis Andrews with this fascinating study of early college presidents in U.S. history and how their deep faith nurtured their work as our nation’s top educators. They not only educated our Founders; they also provided useful guidance for spiritual wisdom which Andrews translates for today’s modern audience.” —Mike McCurry, professor/director, Wesley Theological Seminary and former State Department/White House spokesman (1993-98)

For almost three hundred years, almost every American college was run by a Christian minister. Although these presidents represented a wide variety of denominations, they collectively developed an enormously popular student seminar on how to find spiritual satisfaction in the larger world beyond home and church—a discipline that eventually inspired the entire country through a series of bestselling books. The late nineteenth century saw the first wave of women college presidents who, although not ordained ministers, became equally passionate advocates for this transformative spiritual program. Combining historical research with the insights of modern psychology and his own experience as therapist and teacher, Dr. Andrews makes the insights of the early college president assessible to the millions of today’s Christians seeking to extend the comforts of faith into all their worldly activities.

Book The Really Hard Problem

Download or read book The Really Hard Problem written by Owen Flanagan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-02-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A noted philosopher proposes a naturalistic (rather than supernaturalistic) way to solve the "really hard problem": how to live in a meaningful way—how to live a life that really matters—even as a finite material being living in a material world. If consciousness is "the hard problem" in mind science—explaining how the amazing private world of consciousness emerges from neuronal activity—then "the really hard problem," writes Owen Flanagan in this provocative book, is explaining how meaning is possible in the material world. How can we make sense of the magic and mystery of life naturalistically, without an appeal to the supernatural? How do we say truthful and enchanting things about being human if we accept the fact that we are finite material beings living in a material world, or, in Flanagan's description, short-lived pieces of organized cells and tissue? Flanagan's answer is both naturalistic and enchanting. We all wish to live in a meaningful way, to live a life that really matters, to flourish, to achieve eudaimonia—to be a "happy spirit." Flanagan calls his "empirical-normative" inquiry into the nature, causes, and conditions of human flourishing eudaimonics. Eudaimonics, systematic philosophical investigation that is continuous with science, is the naturalist's response to those who say that science has robbed the world of the meaning that fantastical, wishful stories once provided. Flanagan draws on philosophy, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and psychology, as well as on transformative mindfulness and self-cultivation practices that come from such nontheistic spiritual traditions as Buddhism, Confucianism, Aristotelianism, and Stoicism, in his quest. He gathers from these disciplines knowledge that will help us understand the nature, causes, and constituents of well-being and advance human flourishing. Eudaimonics can help us find out how to make a difference, how to contribute to the accumulation of good effects—how to live a meaningful life.

Book The Spiritual World

    Book Details:
  • Author : Onório Cutane
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2021-08-25
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book The Spiritual World written by Onório Cutane and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present piece is an epiphany to understanding the supernatural factors that influence the lives of men on earth. It's a treaty on the spiritual world and the spiritual actors that compose it in their various organizations and hierarchical structures. The general objective is to open the curtains, remove the scales from human eyes, and give a detailed understanding of how spiritual forces dictate the lives of men on earth. The man of God, apostle Onório Cutane, unveils mysteries of a dimension that has always been present with humans, but many have never come to understand. It's a dimension above the physical realm, the fourth dimension, called the spiritual dimension. In it, angelic actors belonging to two antagonistic realms interact with their agendas - some for and others against the life of human beings on earth. Furthermore, it aims to awaken our understanding that not everything we see with our physical eyes is all that exists in our world. We live parallel with beings from other dimensions and layers - the angelic beings of good and/or evil. In this revealing and fascinating piece, the reader will learn about the spiritual actors of good: from God to His angels, their chain of command, and operating structure. Furthermore, you will learn about the devil and his angels (principalities, powers, princes of darkness, spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places, and about demons), from their hierarchical structure, their operations on earth, and how to stop their activities and influence for the sake of God's will and the welfare of men. This book will make you realize that there is permanent parallelism and a cause-and-effect relationship between the projections of the actors of the spirit world and the activities and events that are laconically considered normal by humanity. Moreover, the reader will realize that the course of this world is dictated from this dimension: the spiritual world. Finally, this work will make you see beyond the physical world and equip you with tools that will give you mastery over the dark forces at work on earth from the fourth dimension.

Book excerpt: When you look in the mirror, what do you see: a person who truly believes he/she is on the right path, or one struggling daily to find a sense of identity? More importantly, how do you see God as you seek the purpose for your life: as your back pocket Lord, or as your personal guide? For some, they may feel they are on the right path but have drifted away from discerning and understanding God’s will for them. This inspired pastor and author Dennis Lee to establish a meaningful resource for readers wanting to grow in their relationship with God, in his new Christian discipleship book; From Here to There: A Journey to Spiritual Transformation, part of his Spiritual Formation series. As an “A through Z roadmap on discipleship,” Dennis offers readers a biblically-sound guide to familiarize readers to biblical principles of what it’s like to be a follower of Jesus Christ, being found in His likeness. Each chapter clarifies this developing relationship with God, established when you accept Jesus as your Savior and Lord, and furthered through changing how you approach living this life in Christ. Pastor Lee takes the reader along this narrow road described by Jesus, looking at a Christian’s true identity when pursuing God’s presence and becoming aligned with His will. To make sure his readers’ stay upon this path, Lee looks at Satan’s potholes that damages a person’s spiritual transformation, as well as God’s speed bumps to help believers slow down and not miss God’s promises for their lives. It’s a journey to the ultimate destination of Heaven with God, and this guide will help you make the necessary changes and take the required steps to stay upon God’s path.

Book Spiritual Living in a Material World

Download or read book Spiritual Living in a Material World written by Morton T. Kelsey and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Between Horror and Hope' is a study of Paul's metaphorical language of death in Romans 6:1-11. The scholarly debate focuses on two main issues; the origin of the 'commentatio mortis' tradition and its development. Dr. Sabou argues that the origin of this terminology is original to Paul; that it was the apostle's own insight into the meaning of Christ's death (a "death to sin") and his understanding of the identity of Christ in his death (as the anointed davidic king) which guided him to create this metaphor of "dying to sin" as a way of describing the relationship of the believer with sin. On the development of this language of death, the author argues that this language conveys two aspects — horror and hope. The first is discussed in the context of crucifixion in which Paul explains the believer's "death to sin" by presenting Christ's death as the death of the anointed davidic king who won the victory over sin and death by rising from the dead. Paul affirms that believers are "coalesced" with what was "proclaimed" about Christ's death and resurrection, thereby allowing him to assert that the releasing of the body from the power of sin is a result of "crucifixion." This "crucifixion" is the "condemnation" inflicted on our past lives in the age inaugurated by Adam's sin and this is such a horrible event that believers have to stay away from sin since sin leads to such punishment. In contrast, hope is presented in the context of "burial." The believers' "burial with" Christ points to the fact that they are part of Christ's family and this is accomplished by the overwhelming action of God by which he pushes us toward the event of Christ's death, an act pictured in baptism. It is this "burial with" Christ that allows believers to share with Christ in newness of life.

Book Dynamics of Spiritual Life

Download or read book Dynamics of Spiritual Life written by Richard F. Lovelace and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic work of spiritual theology, historian Richard Lovelace presents a history of spiritual renewals in light of biblical models. Drawing from the best of different Protestant traditions, Dynamics of Spiritual Life lays out a comprehensive approach to the renewal of the church. In the first half of the book, Lovelace surveys awakening movements since the Reformation, particularly emphasizing Jonathan Edwards's theology of renewal. He then goes deeper into specific elements of such movements and their significance for both doctrinal reformation and spiritual renewal. Lovelace examines such practical issues as renewal of the local congregation, ways revivals go wrong, prospects for closing the "sanctification gap," the historical role of evangelical movements in promoting both unity and division, and Christian approaches to the arts. With scholarly and pastoral insight, he offers a powerful vision of renewal that can unify various models across traditions, combining individual and corporate spirituality, social activism, and evangelism. For over forty years, this well-loved book has helped Christians understand the spiritual movement they are a part of and guided leaders in planting and pastoring churches. This expanded edition features a new forewordby Timothy Keller.
