In the last 10 years, substantial progress has been made in terms of understanding some of the mechanisms that drive severe asthma; there have also been concomitant advances in the recognition of specific molecular phenotypes. This ERS Monograph covers all aspects of severe asthma – epidemiology, diagnosis, mechanisms, treatment and management – but has a particular focus on recent understanding of mechanistic heterogeneity based on an analytic approach using various ‘omics platforms applied to clinically well-defined asthma cohorts. How these advances have led to improved management targets is also emphasised. This book brings together the clinical and scientific expertise of those from around the world who are collaborating to solve the problem of severe asthma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide from the National Institutes of Health (Publication 07-5248) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute provides the latest information on asthma management, describing asthma symptoms, the latest treatments, and ways to monitor and keep your asthma under control. We know a lot more about asthma today than we did just a decade ago, and we have a much better understanding of how to treat it. In fact, based on what we now know, most people with asthma should be able to gain control of it—and keep it under control for a lifetime. By working closely with your doctor or other health care provider, you should be able to learn how to control your asthma. And once it is controlled, you should usually be able to do whatever someone without asthma can do—whether it's sleeping through the night every night or competing in the Olympics. In other words, you should be able to live a normal active life! The following list shows what your life could be like if your asthma were controlled: As a rule, you should have: Few, if any, asthma symptoms; Few, if any, awakenings during the night caused by asthma symptoms; No need to take time off from school or work due to asthma; No limits on your fully participating in physical activities; No emergency department visits; No hospital stays; Few or no side effects from asthma medicines. Doctors often refer to this list as the goals of asthma treatment. Happily, most people with asthma can reach these goals by taking the following four actions: 1. Work closely with your doctor or other health care provider to learn how to manage your asthma. This is the key to keeping your asthma under control. 2. Learn which medicines you should take and when you should take each of them. Also learn how to use an inhaler and spacer correctly. Then take your medicines just as your doctor recommends. 3. Identify the things that bring on your asthma symptoms—your asthma triggers. Then avoid them or, at least, reduce your exposure to them. 4. Learn how to monitor your asthma and to recognize and respond quickly to warning signs of an attack. This guide gives you the very latest on asthma and provides practical suggestions for managing it effectively. It contains information about the most effective medications for treating it and describes how to take them. It also includes information about common warning signs of an asthma attack and explains how to act quickly to keep your asthma symptoms from getting worse. Welcome to “So You Have Asthma”—your one-stop source for the latest information on controlling your asthma.

Book Clearing the Air

  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2000-05-24
  • ISBN : 0309064961
  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book Clearing the Air written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-05-24 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since about 1980, asthma prevalence and asthma-related hospitalizations and deaths have increased substantially, especially among children. Of particular concern is the high mortality rate among African Americans with asthma. Recent studies have suggested that indoor exposuresâ€"to dust mites, cockroaches, mold, pet dander, tobacco smoke, and other biological and chemical pollutantsâ€"may influence the disease course of asthma. To ensure an appropriate response, public health and education officials have sought a science-based assessment of asthma and its relationship to indoor air exposures. Clearing the Air meets this need. This book examines how indoor pollutants contribute to asthmaâ€"its causation, prevalence, triggering, and severity. The committee discusses asthma among the general population and in sensitive subpopulations including children, low-income individuals, and urban residents. Based on the most current findings, the book also evaluates the scientific basis for mitigating the effects of indoor air pollutants implicated in asthma. The committee identifies priorities for public health policy, public education outreach, preventive intervention, and further research.

Book WHO Housing and Health Guidelines

Download or read book WHO Housing and Health Guidelines written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved housing conditions can save lives, prevent disease, increase quality of life, reduce poverty, and help mitigate climate change. Housing is becoming increasingly important to health in light of urban growth, ageing populations and climate change. The WHO Housing and health guidelines bring together the most recent evidence to provide practical recommendations to reduce the health burden due to unsafe and substandard housing. Based on newly commissioned systematic reviews, the guidelines provide recommendations relevant to inadequate living space (crowding), low and high indoor temperatures, injury hazards in the home, and accessibility of housing for people with functional impairments. In addition, the guidelines identify and summarize existing WHO guidelines and recommendations related to housing, with respect to water quality, air quality, neighbourhood noise, asbestos, lead, tobacco smoke and radon. The guidelines take a comprehensive, intersectoral perspective on the issue of housing and health and highlight co-benefits of interventions addressing several risk factors at the same time. The WHO Housing and health guidelines aim at informing housing policies and regulations at the national, regional and local level and are further relevant in the daily activities of implementing actors who are directly involved in the construction, maintenance and demolition of housing in ways that influence human health and safety. The guidelines therefore emphasize the importance of collaboration between the health and other sectors and joint efforts across all government levels to promote healthy housing. The guidelines' implementation at country-level will in particular contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals on health (SDG 3) and sustainable cities (SDG 11). WHO will support Member States in adapting the guidelines to national contexts and priorities to ensure safe and healthy housing for all.

That translates into almost five million American children affected by both allergies and asthma. And as Dr. Allen J. Dozor, head of one of the largest pediatric pulmonary practices in the United States, has seen among his patients, some of the most upsetting effects of allergies and asthma are the psychological wounds inflicted on a child's self-image. In some cases these side effects, such as stress and obesity, cycle back to make the original condition worse. Dr. Dozor's plan, developed over the last twenty years, is designed to empower both parents and children. His warmhearted but reality-based approach includes How to give the right amount of medication for best effects and no side effects Empowering your children to manage their own condition so that they can feel safe and secure Prevention and management in school Handling emergencies And much more!
