After two years of working, Abdallah wanted to have a better future. He applied to and was accepted by the American University of Beirut (AUB) as a full time student. While walking on campus, Abdallah spotted Laila's sister Najwa who also was a student at the university. He asked her about Laila. Najwa said, Laila is still in London and she asked about you. Abdallah told her to please say hello to her for me. Six months later, Abdallah asked Najwa about Laila. She said well, Laila is back home in Beirut now. Abdallah said, hopefully she and I will cross paths again. A week later, on June 15, 1958, Abdallah saw a pretty young lady sitting on a bench under the Banyan tree. He approached her reluctantly and asked if she were Laila. She responded by asking if he is Abdallah. Both rekindled their relationship after five years of separation. They dated on and off for two years and decided to get engaged on October 20, 1960. They got married on December 15, 1962 after which they traveled to the United Stated as Abdallah was accepted to the graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley.

Book excerpt: Pink Revolutions describes how queer politics in India occupies an uneasy position between the forces of neoliberal globalization, on the one hand, and the nationalist Hindu fundamentalism that has emerged since the 1990s, on the other. While neoliberal forces use queerness to highlight India’s democratic credentials and stature within a globalized world, nationalist voices claim that queer movements in the country pose a threat to Indian national identity. Nishant Shahani argues that this tension implicates queer politics within messy entanglements and knotted ideological triangulations, geometries of power in which local understandings of “authentic” nationalism brush up against global agendas of multinational capital. Eschewing structures of absolute complicity or abject alterity, Pink Revolutions pays attention to the logics of triangulation in various contexts: gay tourism, university campus politics, diasporic cultural productions, and AIDS activism. The book articulates a framework through which queer politics can challenge rather than participate in neoliberal imperatives, an approach that will interest scholars engaged with queer studies and postcolonial scholarship, as well as activists and academics wrestling with global capitalism and right-wing regimes around the world.

The Migration-Development Regime introduces a novel analytical framework to help answer this question in India, the world's largest emigrant exporter and the world's largest remittance-receiving country. Drawing on an archival analysis of Indian government documents, an original data base of Indian migrants' transnational organizations, and over 200 interviews with poor and elite Indian emigrants, recruiters, and government officials, this book exposes the vital role the Indian state (from the colonial era to the present day) has long played in forging and legitimizing class inequalities within India through the management of international emigration. It also exposes how poor and elite emigrants have differentially resisted and re-shaped state emigration practices over time. By taking a long and class-based view, this book recasts contemporary migration not simply as a problematic function of neoliberalism or as a development panacea for sending countries, but as a dynamic historical process that sending states and migrants have long used to shape local development. In doing so, it re-defines the primary problems of global migration, exposes the material and ideological impact that migration has on sending state development, and isolates what is truly novel about contemporary migration.
