Book A Child s Garden of Verses Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Child s Garden of Verses Classic Reprint written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's Garden of Verses Small wonder is it that this man - who to the last of his days retained that enthusiasm which made him as a child throw himself into his games in a very passion of play - could write for children in the spirit of a child. In him the power to reveal his personality in his writings was combined with that of recalling at any time sensations once experienced. And thus in the simple verses of his Garden we have a true picture of the frail, brown-eyed little boy whose restless nights faithful Cummie soothed; so many of whose days were spent in the Land of Counterpane, the pleasant aspect of which he was yet able to see; whose happiest hours were passed in the dear, delightful garden at Colinton - that enchanted ground where his vivid imagination ran riot. While the quaint conceits and the deep philosophy of some of these poems of childhood are beyond the power of children to appreciate, the thoughts in the lines are children's thoughts and the point of View that of a child, and few are the childish readers who will not be captivated by their charm. And since an acquaintance with this man's work means an abiding joy in him that grows with familiarity, the teacher or parent who leads a child to form the acquaintance renders a service that is indeed worth while. Book A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by J. C. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Verse for Boys and Girls, Vol. 1 With children who have learned to read the pleasure of poetry is not all sensuous: the emotions, too, begin to be stirred. Now we cannot make children feel poetry unless we feel it ourselves and show that we do so by our manner of reading or repeating it. Some explanation will be needed here and there to make the ideas clear enough to be felt: more than this runs the risk of explaining the charm away. If a poem is to delight the mind as well as the ear, it should first be read or said as a whole; for it is only the whole that properly has meaning. Most short poems that are worth knowing are worth knowing by heart. But if these poems be studied and enjoyed as I have said, it matters little how many verses are deliberately learned by heart. Verses that are used to train the voice should no doubt be learned as a set task. But beyond this there is little need to mak a task of an exercise whose true end is to lay up permanent possibilities of delight. That end will be best attained if, after the poems have been studied and enjoyed, the children are left to choose for themselves what pieces they will learn by heart. If the book is in their hands for a year or two, those who have a gift for verse will be found to have learned most of it; the others might try at least to learn one poem from each section. Book The Moon Is Always Round

Download or read book The Moon Is Always Round written by Jonathan Gibson and published by New Growth Press. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even young children want answers to the hard questions about God and suffering. In The Moon Is Always Round, seminary professor and author Jonathan Gibson uses the vivid imagery of the moon to explain to children how God’s goodness is always present, even when it might appear to be obscured by upsetting or difficult circumstances. In this beautiful, full-color illustrated book, he allows readers to eavesdrop on the conversations he had with his young son in response to his sister’s death. Father and son share a simple liturgy together that reminds them that, just as the moon is always round despite its different phases, so also the goodness of God is always present throughout the different phases of life. A section in the back of the book offers further biblical help for parents and caregivers in explaining God’s goodness to children. Jonathan Gibson reminds children of all ages that God’s goodness is present in the most difficult of times, even if we can’t always see it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Poems for Little Children: Suitable for Memorizing and for Recitation at School and at Home The compiler of this book thinks that time taken to teach these maxims, proverbs, and selections is time well and profitably spent, beneficial in many ways. We all know that youth is the golden period for memorizing. What we learn in youth grows up with us, and in time becomes a part of us. Hence the necessity for choice things with which to store the mind; by so doing we hope to verify the saying, Keep your head and heart full of good thoughts, and bad ones will find no room. The cup that is full will hold no more. When the pupils advance to the grades where lan guage work is required of them, they will have correctly formed sentences on the tip of the tongue, ready to drop Off. Facts learned in rhyme, if thoroughly learned, are seldom forgotten. How many of us have had occasion to repeat the rhyme, Thirty days hath September, etc., to call to mind the number of days of some month, which had wandered off.
