Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ORIENTA...She is the Dance By: Patricia Badia-Johnson Commentary on Orienta’s Writings: “…She thus breaks the compact silence of working-class women who hardly had the time and energy to write about their life when they had to support their families. Interestingly though, Orienta only writes a brief autobiography, but concentrates the effort of making sense of her life into writing a novel. The novel is a rare female coming-of-age story, the distilled product of facts and imagination, where second-generation struggles to fit between two worlds are codified and finally solved. Her personal ambivalence is developed not only in terms of ethnicity, but also in terms of a special vocation, and job-Orienta was first of all a dancer. As several other immigrants, or children of immigrants, Orienta felt the need to write down her life, pinning it down and offering it to her family as point of stability. As a woman, her writing finds a deeper raison d’etre that is clarified by Helen Barolini in her introduction to The Dream Book, the first anthology of Italian American women’s writing: Orienta is one of those women “who with rare exceptions had never before been authorized either by their external world nor by their internal one to be authors of themselves or of the word.” Ilaria Serra Florida Atlantic University Italian Americana Cultural and Historical Review

The debut won Kellerman the 1987 Macavity Award for Best First Novel and turned into a long-running bestselling series. But how exactly did it all come about? In this autobiographical piece, Kellerman discusses the origins of Decker and Lazarus and answers common questions from readers. Like, how much does she resemble her character, Rina? And how have Peter and Rina evolved? But Kellerman also talks about her own life as an author, mother, and wife. She shares what it’s like being married to a fellow novelist, and how exactly she carved out a place for herself in the world of crime writing. Book Sibling Relations and the Horizontal Axis in Theory and Practice

Download or read book Sibling Relations and the Horizontal Axis in Theory and Practice written by Smadar Ashuach and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interpersonal world of sibling relationships, explaining how these relationships are central to the development of the psyche of the individual, of the group, of society and of the organisation. Sibling Relations and the Horizontal Axis in Theory and Practice considers four key areas: sibling relations, sibling trauma, the law of the mother and the horizontal axis. The contributors journey through examples from the psychological, philosophical, organisational, social and cultural realms, giving a new perspective on the psychic world and the importance of sibling relationships as an empowering and therapeutic component for building relationships. While we are used to looking at the individual, the group and at society through the vertical, hierarchical relationship that results from parent–child relationships, this book discusses and reveals the impact of the horizontal axis. Sibling Relations and the Horizontal Axis in Theory and Practice will be important reading for psychoanalysts, group analysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists in practice and in training.

Book Women Trauma and Journeys towards Desistance

Download or read book Women Trauma and Journeys towards Desistance written by Madeline Petrillo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women, Trauma, and Journeys towards Desistance: Navigating the Labyrinth provides an examination of women’s desistance from crime from a gender-responsive, trauma-informed perspective. The book is based on the reflections of fifty-six women over a three-year period as they transition from custody to the community. With the women, the author examines how experiences of trauma, victimisation, and intersectional oppression constrain access to traditional desistance supporting processes, including supportive relationships, identity construction, the exercise of agency, and engagement with treatment and interventions, reframing these processes from trauma-informed perspective. The book joins together the women’s insights and experiences with principles of gender-responsive, trauma-informed principles in a framework through which criminal justice practitioners can support women in their efforts to leave crime behind. The framework for practice is a fusion of concepts from desistance theory, principles of gender-responsivity, and trauma-informed practice designed to help women understand the root causes of the problems they face in the present whilst building on their resilience and strengths to achieve their goals for their futures. This book is ideal reading for scholars and students of criminology and criminal justice, particularly rehabilitation, gender and crime, and feminist criminology. It will also be of interest to academics and practitioners of forensic psychology and social work, as well as probation officers, social workers and prison officers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 is dedicated to the memory of Prof Lothar Fietz (University of Tübingen) in appreciation of his merits as an outstanding Huxley scholar, as a Founding Member and Curator of the Aldous Huxley Society and as a true friend (see the In Memoriam above). The volume opens with a sequence of hitherto unpublished Huxley writings, starting with the three extant versions from 1949 of his dramatization of Ape and Essence (1948), thematically linked with two texts treating the physical survival of mankind and three contrasting texts discussing the question of spiritual survival. This section is followed by Huxley's draft for an introduction of Edna St. Vincent Millay at one of her poetry readings in 1938 and an autograph letter to Seabury Edwardes that he wrote shortly after the publication of The Doors of Perception (1954). The volume closes with several critical articles on Huxley's relationship with D. T. Suzuki, his Sanary period and his view and practice of literary utopias.

Book We are Australian Vol 1 Colour Edition

Download or read book We are Australian Vol 1 Colour Edition written by Rina Robinson and published by Linda Ruth Brooks. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You know us. We are your cousin Alice, who tells the story of Nanna's funeral; how all the cars followed Uncle George in the wrong direction, while a priest stood by the grave, waiting to conduct the burial. We are your dad, who you visit on warm summer nights, and he talks about the old days; when he met mum; when he worked in the cane fields. We are the migrant family next door, who laugh till they cry, telling of how, when they arrived in the fifties, they went to the milk bar for a gelati. The owner kept saying "Gilleti" and offering them razor blades. We are the Vietnamese mother who tells you one day how she came to Australia. She quietly talks of three weeks at sea in a small boat, crammed in with twenty others, knees to chest, cold, wet and hungry. We are anyone who has lived in Australia since the 1930s. Often, our stories will be your stories; but some will be strange, different; some will be funny and others will bring tears. We are the story tellers who started with memories that turned into stories. We wrote them down, and learned the frustration when the words wouldn't come; and experienced that magical moment when the words took over, and the story wrote itself. We became authors. Now here we are. These are our stories; our country's living history, by the best historians of all - those who lived it. John McBride (2010)

Book Catastrophic Grief Trauma and Resilience in Child Concentration Camp Survivors

Download or read book Catastrophic Grief Trauma and Resilience in Child Concentration Camp Survivors written by Tracey Rori Farber and published by Academic Studies PRess. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprehensively explores the life trajectories of nine child/adolescent Holocaust concentration camp survivors as recollected when the subjects were elders. Based on extensive face to face interview material, enduring psychological and symptomatic effects were evident. Survivors retained vivid recollections of the horror of internment and expressed ongoing grief for the multiple losses they had experienced. Unresolved grief contributed to a sense of existential loneliness, particularly prominent in their late life reflections. Despite indications of resilience and life productivity, a ‘Trauma Trilogy’ of inter-linked catastrophic grief, anger, and survivor guilt contributed to a sense of pain and struggle in negotiating Erikson’s final life task of Integrity versus Despair.
