McCollough's concerns with ethical living and the ethical treatment of others, especially strangers, permeate this third collection of his work. Named for the 4x4 cell in the Tower of London, LITTLE EASE takes the idea of imprisonment as something that can be elective, as marital fidelity, religious beliefs, and staying true to one's ethical system generally are. "The voice speaking from these poems is always that of a prisoner," McCollough says, "sometimes very happily so." "[McCollough] takes his palette from the social and religious upheavals of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when the grip of a 'personal God' began to tighten. Aaron McCollough is a poet of prodigious powers, able to take the full of his poetic inheritance and to make essential poetry at the center of our own ferocious gyre"--Susan Wheeler.

Book Albert Camus and Education

Download or read book Albert Camus and Education written by Aidan Hobson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book continues the story about education and the absurd. Its specific focus is on the work of Albert Camus. It tries to summarise the ways in which his writing has already inspired and influenced educational thinking and practice, and it offers a new set of educational interpretations of six of his major works. These set out the exciting challenge about how we might think about the purposes and practices of education in the future, how to talk about these, plan and deliver. Using the work of Albert Camus in this way is an attempt to bring him and his ideas closer to educational discussions. This is a deliberate attempt to show the synergy between some of his major concepts and those that are already cornerstones of educational discourses. Read from an educational perspective the work of Albert Camus also provides guidance and invigorates the imagination as to how education can respond to those increasingly complex, existential crises it finds itself connected to. For educational people interested in these questions this book will hopefully motivate a re-reading of Camus and a brave, new lens on practice.

Download or read book Torture and the Law of Proof written by John H. Langbein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Torture and the Law of Proof John H. Langbein explores the world of the thumbscrew and the rack, engines of torture authorized for investigating crime in European legal systems from medieval times until well into the eighteenth century. Drawing on juristic literature and legal records, Langbein's book, first published in 1977, remains the definitive account of how European legal systems became dependent on the use of torture in their routine criminal procedures, and how they eventually worked themselves free of it. The book has recently taken on an eerie relevance as a consequence of controversial American and British interrogation practices in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. In a new introduction, Langbein contrasts the "new" law of torture with the older European law and offers some pointed lessons about the difficulty of reconciling coercion with accurate investigation. Embellished with fascinating illustrations of torture devices taken from an eighteenth-century criminal code, this crisply written account will engage all those interested in torture's remarkable grip on European legal history.

Book Torture and Democracy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Darius M. Rejali
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9780691114224
  • Pages : 892 pages

Download or read book Torture and Democracy written by Darius M. Rejali and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most comprehensive, and most comprehensively chilling, study of modern torture yet written. Darius Rejali, one of the world's leading experts on torture, takes the reader from the late nineteenth century to the aftermath of Abu Ghraib, from slavery and the electric chair to electrotorture in American inner cities, and from French and British colonial prison cells and the Spanish-American War to the fields of Vietnam, the wars of the Middle East, and the new democracies of Latin America and Europe. As Rejali traces the development and application of one torture technique after another in these settings, he reaches startling conclusions. As the twentieth century progressed, he argues, democracies not only tortured, but set the international pace for torture. Dictatorships may have tortured more, and more indiscriminately, but the United States, Britain, and France pioneered and exported techniques that have become the lingua franca of modern torture: methods that leave no marks. Under the watchful eyes of reporters and human rights activists, low-level authorities in the world's oldest democracies were the first to learn that to scar a victim was to advertise iniquity and invite scandal. Long before the CIA even existed, police and soldiers turned instead to "clean" techniques, such as torture by electricity, ice, water, noise, drugs, and stress positions. As democracy and human rights spread after World War II, so too did these methods. Rejali makes this troubling case in fluid, arresting prose and on the basis of unprecedented research--conducted in multiple languages and on several continents--begun years before most of us had ever heard of Osama bin Laden or Abu Ghraib. The author of a major study of Iranian torture, Rejali also tackles the controversial question of whether torture really works, answering the new apologists for torture point by point. A brave and disturbing book, this is the benchmark against which all future studies of modern torture will be measured.

Book An Inquirer s Guide to Christian Believing

Download or read book An Inquirer s Guide to Christian Believing written by Gunnar Urang and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-17 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living by a biblical faith requires of us a yes, a yes to the God continuously present to us within the life opportunities continuously offered us. Questions of 'belief', in contrast, require a yes 'and' no. Genuine faith, declares Brother David Steindl-Rast, holds its beliefs firmly, yes, but ever so lightly. And the I 'don't' mean maybe!? This has to do with the intensity in our questioning. Our ultimate concern, after all, is living a relationship in which we know ourselves not just as those who ask questions but as those who 'are' the question, and seek to know God not just as the one who gives answers but the one who 'is' the answer. This book consists . . . of a series of questions about basic Christian beliefs, the answers to which have been, and continue to be, controversial. Each chapter will try to make clear why the answer to its particular question has to be a yes 'and' no and how the response can also include, nevertheless, an emphatic And I 'don't' mean maybe! For those with some knowledge of Christianity but finding themselves confused about certain beliefs they have been led to identify as Christian, this book can provide a greater clarity in their understanding of this familiar yet strange religion--thus addressing, perhaps, what pollster George Gallup, Jr., identifies as the knowledge gap in the religious experience of Americans: the often vast difference between Americans' stated faith and their lack of the most basic knowledge about that faith. Non-Christians may find here a useful survey of Christian belief presented in nontechnical style and noncoercive rhetoric.
