Book Irradiation Experiment for Lithium Ceramics

Download or read book Irradiation Experiment for Lithium Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid breeder materials are required in D-T fusion reactor blankets to convert fusion neutrons to tritium and thermal energy while providing some neutron shielding for the magnets. Lithium compounds such as Li2O, LiAlO2, Li4SiO4 and Li2ZrO3 have been proposed as solid breeder materials. Tritium is necessary to maintain the fuel supply for the D-T fusion reaction. No high burnup irradiation performance data is available for these materials in a neutron environment prototypic of the fusion blanket. The FUBR Experiment in EBR-II has been designed and built to evaluate the irradiation performance of these materials.

Book Lithium Irradiation Experiment

Book excerpt: The subject of tritium production in the Antiproton Source Collection lens was raised in the mid-1980s during the design phase of the pbar source. Interest in it has recurred during development of the proton lens and in recent investigations to determine the feasibility of liquid lithium collection lenses for the pbar source and a muon collider project. Calculations for tritium and beryllium 7 production on lithium suffer from a lack of information on medium and high energy cross section data. In addition, knowledge of the energy spectrum within the target vault is based upon calculations. Knowledge of the low energy spectrum, important for tritium production on lithium, is limited, if not non-existent. For Collider Run II, effort is to be applied to improve the performance of the solid lithium lens. Historically, examination of failed lithium lenses has not been pursued because they have been fairly radioactive and because they are thought to contain significant quantities of the radionuclides tritium and beryllium 7. The development of methods to examine failed lithium lenses may be desirable so that the specific causes of failure can be discovered. From such studies, design improvements can be incorporated with the goal of achieving lens performances goals related to Collider Run II. The purpose of the lithium irradiation experiment is to determine the production rates of radioisotopes tritium and beryllium 7 within the lithium lens in its operating in its operating environment.

Book Single and Multiple Burst Neutron Irradiation Test of Lithium Doped Silicon Solar Cells

Download or read book Single and Multiple Burst Neutron Irradiation Test of Lithium Doped Silicon Solar Cells written by Paul A. Zielie and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 90 high efficiency (9.5% - 12%) lithium doped silicon solar cells were exposed to neutron fluence levels between 1.65 x 10 to the 11th power to 2.14 x 10 to the 13th power n/sq. cm (1 Mev equivalent) at the White Sands Missile Range Fast Burst Reactor. Pre- and post-exposure measurements were taken to determine the amount of degradation due to neutron exposure and the rate and extent to which the damage annealed. Half of the cells exposed to neutrons were fabricated from a Lopex silicon starting material; the remainder were fabricated from crucible grown silicon. The Lopex cells generally annealed to within 80% of pre-exposure power output after a week at room temperature. Crucible grown cells exposed to the highest neutron fluence levels generally annealed to within less than 80% of initial values. This report documents the test procedures and results of the experiment. Extensive data taken on the cells is on file and may be made available for detailed comparison and future needs. (Author).

Book Irradiation Devices for Reactor Materials

Download or read book Irradiation Devices for Reactor Materials written by F. Lefevre and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of radiation behavior is of prime importance in the investigation of fusion reactor materials. With this purpose, the "Services des Piles de Saclay" (SPS) has been using the experimental OSIRIS pool reactor, having a nominal power of 70 MW, to develop irradiation devices. The devices enable (1) the study of the crack growth on a sample under alternative stress in a neutron flux, (2) the study of stress relaxation on materials under irradiation, (3) the study of creep and growth of cylindrical test pieces in a neutron flux, (4) the irradiation of large amounts of protection ceramics of fusion reactors so as to characterize their mechanical properties, and (5) the irradiation of lithium containing ceramics, which are possible materials for the breeding blanket of a fusion reactor. The last device was used in the ALICE 1 experiment, carried out in collaboration with the "Division d'Etudes de Séparation Isotopique et de Chimie Physique" (DESICP), for the irradiation of 130 specimens of ? LiAlO2, of natural lithium 6 abundance and of various textures. The unclad samples were irradiated at 400 and 600°C, in a maximum fast flux of 2 x 1014 n . cm-2 . s-1 (E > 1 MeV) and maximum perturbed thermal flux 6 x 1013 n . cm-2 . s-1 for 26 days (from 16 Oct. to 13 Nov. 1984). The amount of tritium generated was 330 Ci. The 6Li burnup could amount to 15 to 20%. The first post irradiation examinations showed general good behavior of the samples. There were no changes in the dimensions of the samples, nor significant thermal conductivity variations. Retained tritium and helium amounts varied depending on the ceramic texture and irradiation temperature. Small variations in the sound velocity and cracks were observed only in two 600°C levels, corresponding to containers that received mechanical shocks during the dismantling of the experimental device.

Book In situ Tritium Recovery from Li Sub 2 O Irradiated in Fast Neutron Flux

Download or read book In situ Tritium Recovery from Li Sub 2 O Irradiated in Fast Neutron Flux written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BEATRIX-2 irradiation experiment is an in-situ tritium release experiment to evaluate the stability and tritium release characteristics of Li2O under fast neutron irradiation to extended burnups. A thin-annular ring specimen capable of temperature changes was irradiated in Phase 1 of the experiment to a lithium burnup of 4%. The primary emphasis of the test plan was to determine the effect and interrelationship of gas composition and temperature on the tritium recovery from Li2O. Temperature changes in the range from 500 to 650°C resulted in a decreasing tritium inventory with increasing temperature and series of specific temperature changes were carried out at intervals throughout the experiment to characterize the effect of burnup. Decreasing the amount of hydrogen in the sweep gas resulted in an increase in the tritium inventory in the Li2O specimen. The tritium recovery during startup and shutdown was observed to be strongly influenced by the composition of the sweep gas.

Book Tritium Release from Beryllium Discs and Lithium Ceramics Irradiated in the SIBELIUS Experiment

Download or read book Tritium Release from Beryllium Discs and Lithium Ceramics Irradiated in the SIBELIUS Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SIBELIUS experiment was designed to obtain information on the compatibility between beryllium and ceramics, as well as beryllium and steel, in a neutron environment. This experiment comprised irradiation of eight capsules, seven of which were independently purged with a He/0.1% H2 gas mixture. Four capsules were used to examine beryllium/ceramic (Li2O, LiAlO2, Li4SiO4, and Li2ZrO3) and beryllium/steel (Types 316L and 1.4914) compacts. Isothermal anneal experiments have been run on representative beryllium and ceramic disks from each of the four capsules at 550°C to 850°C in steps of 100°C. The results indicate that tritium release from the beryllium did not exhibit burst release behavior, as previously reported, but rather a progressive release with increasing temperature. Generally, (approximately)99% of the tritium was released by 850°C. Tritium release from the ceramic discs was quite similar to the behavior shown in other dynamic tritium release experiments on lithium ceramics. The tritium content in beryllium discs adjacent to a steel sample was found to be significantly lower than that found in a beryllium disc adjacent to a ceramic sample. Recoil of tritium from the ceramic into the beryllium appears to be the source of tritium entering the beryllium, probably residing in the beryllium oxide layer.

Book A Study of American Radiation Resistant lithium Solar Cells

Download or read book A Study of American Radiation Resistant lithium Solar Cells written by R. L. Crabb and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance characteristics of twenty-five American lithium-doped p on n silicon solar cells have been evaluated following sequential 1 MeV electron irradiation for fluences up to 10 to the 16th power/e.sq.cm. Although the 'self healing' performance recovery exhibited by these cells at room temperature following electron irradiation was impressive, their n-type base silicon sustained much greater damage than the p-type base silicon of the n on p, 10 ohm-cm control cells. Thus the end-of-life performance was, at best, worse than that of conventional n on p, 10 ohm-cm cells. The post-irradiation performance of the lithium cells has remained unchanged for three thousand hours. (Author).

Book excerpt: Fine-grained, sinterable lithium oxide powder was prepared by high-temperature vacuum calcination of molten lithium carbonate. The product was ball milled, cold pressed, and fired in an oxygen atmosphere. The fired density, grain size, and surface roughness varied widely with firing schedule. Most variations were attributed to moisture content. Rings of high-density, sintered lithium oxide will be used in an in-reactor experiment to measure tritium release. 2 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.
