Book excerpt: This monograph contains papers which resulted from an international workshop on the effects of lithium on the hematopoietic and immunologic systems. The meeting was held at the John L. and Beatrice Keeshin International Biomedical Systems Planning Center of Rush University in Eagle River, Wisconsin from June 6 through June 9, 1979. The object of this conference was to bring together scientists from around the world with an interest in the effects of lithium and its potential use in human disease to bolster and stimulate the hematologic and immune systems. These topics seemed to us to be important and the time seemed right for bringing together the workers in these fields to exchange ideas and recent research results. We sought to bring together basic research scientists trying to uncover the mechanism of action of lithium in the stimulation of granulo poiesis and in its immunologic effects, together with those involved in clinical care and the use of lithium as a therapeutic tool in neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders. This was the first use of the Keeshin Center for such a program. The sessions were conducted in a relaxed atmosphere with a good deal of give-and-take by all the participants. The editors of this book hope that it will be useful as the first volume completely devoted to these applications of lithium in these new and, as yet, incompletely developed fields.

The meeting was convened to get a comprehensive view of the immense activity that had occurred in the field since the previous conference on gangliosides held at Mont Sainte-Odile, ~lsace, France, in April 1973. At a conference on Enzymes of Lipid Metabolism held at the same place in April, 1977, several of the participants from the first ganglioside conference in 1973 met again. All previous participants agreed that the first meeting with its many frank and stimulating lectures, round tables and informal discussions had been of tremendous importance for the activity in the field and led to many personal contacts and a warm friendship among the ganglioside researchers. The success of the first meeting must be ascribed largely to one single man, PAUL MANDEL. Therefore, we decided to dedicate the next ganglioside conference to hirn and I was given the privilege to arrange the meeting together with him and staff members at Centre de Neurochirnie, Strasbourg. The Symposium on The Structure and Function of Gangliosides was arranged to honour PAUL MANDEL for his unique and never failing efforts to promote and strengthen international col laboration in all fields of neurochemistry.

The previous meetings in the series were held in Tel Aviv (Israel) and in Baden (Austria) in 1973 and 1976, respectively. The proceedings were also published by Plenum. Knowledge of the pathophysiology of the purines has developed greatly since the 1950's when it was mainly related to clinical gout, and it is now relevant to many fields of Medicine and Biology. It was hosted by Professor Henri Jahn, Professor of Medicine and Chief, Department of Nephrology at the University of Strasbourg. These Workshops have become a tradition in the scientific scene of mineral metabolism. The meetings have been providing a unique framework for close interaction between scientists from various disciplines, such as nephrologists, endocrinologists, bio chemists, nutritionists, and those dealing with bone metabolism. The Workshops also created a forum for the delivery of original information, as well as state-of-the-art presentations on exciting topics of current interest in this evergrowing field of phosphate and mineral homeostasis. The Fourth International Workshop was attended by three hundred scientists from 15 countries including Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States of America. The topics discussed included those dealing with the renal handling of phos phate, calcium and magnesium, intermediary phosphate metabolism and phosphate homeostasis in health and disease. Two symposia were also presented: one dealt with nephrolithiasis and its rela tion to phosphate and the other with bone metabolism. In addition to 22 presentations by invited speakers, the Workshop provided 46 oral and 93 poster presentations selected from over 250 abstracts submitted to the Organizing Committee.

In contrast, gerontology as a branch of science is still comparatively young. During the past decade, concomitant with rapid progress in our understanding of the basic life sciences, vast stores of knowledge about biological aging have been accumulated. This knowledge, however, arising from many scientific disciplines and focused on varying levels of biologic organization, seems almost random and covers everything from molecules to human societies. Theories advanced to interpret the facts and to understand the mech anisms involved in senescence have remained in individual, rather than general, territories. It has long been felt by some gerontologists that it was time for the various specialists to step back and take a generalist view of gerontology, to reconsider and reevaluate the fruits of their analyt ical pursuits at different levels within a broader context. Some others may think it still premature. It seemed, however, that the majority of those who gathered in Tokyo on the occasion of the XIth International Congress of Gerontology were of the opinion that there was much to be gained in looking for interrelationships among the facts and theories originated in the different levels of investiga tion in an attempt to observe and appreciate the biological drama of senescence as an entity.

Book excerpt: The papers in this book represent the proceedings of the Third International Symposium, which was held at the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto in July, 1979. The purpose of this meeting was to bring together experts in the field from a wide variety of backgrounds in an attempt to gain some clarity and insight into the problems of alcohol and aldehyde metabolism. One might ask, "Why have such a meeting and a collection of research papers?" The answer is clear. The societal problem of alcoholism is, unlike many other health problems, growing instead of abating. Treatment efforts are largely ineffective (e.g., Griffith Edwards' classic work)', and fundamental research has yet to identify rational therapy based on sound mechanisms for this disease which effects 5% of the population severely and a much greater percentage to a lesser degree or indirectly. I have become impressed with the possibility that this lack of progress may be-in large part-due to a fundamental oversight on the part of investigators in the field of alcohol research. Simply, this possible problem could be stated as follows: an alcoholic is defined the same way as all other alcoholics. Attempts to identify possible subpopulations of alcoholics with defined and treatable diseases have been minimal. One could argue, however, that little evidence, with the exception of the gross psychiatric definitions (e.g., Jellinek) exists that there are different types of alcoholics. This argument is countered, first, by the dismal lack of progress made in this field by classifying an alcoholic equal to other alcoholics, and second, by analogy with cancer research. Now we know that "cancer" is only a generic term which defines a broad group of diseases, some caused by specific environmental chemicals, others by viruses, etc. Progress was only possible after suitable animal models were developed. More importantly, however, is the fact that once specific forms of the disease (i.e., once the diseases themselves were separated from the generic term) were identified, it was a relatively easy task to develop tests for early identification of some forms of the disease (e.g., the pap smear, etc.). This analogy can be extended to alcoholism's. First, let us assume that we have failed to develop tests for early identification of alcoholisms because the population is not carefully defined into subgroups. If we assume that subpopulations of alcoholics exist, we can again turn to the cancer literature for examples of how to proceed. Much progress in this field rests. On the careful development of strains of animals which differ in their susceptibility to certain carcinogens. By analogy, distinct forms of alcoholisms could be identified by the use of genetics (e.g., Goodwin). First, distinct phenotypes need to be developed for certain characteristics suspected to be important in alcoholism. Second, a test specific for early identification of this specific phenotype can then be developed. Third, longitudinal studies must be performed in humans to see if the animal work can be applied to man. Implicit in this rationale is the thought that progress is not possible by studying alcoholics 20 years after primary changes had occurred, nor even by studying pre-alcoholics until specific sub forms of the disease are identified. Thus, the need for fundamental research into the mechanisms responsible for alcoholism is required. Unfortunately, alcohol research appears to suffer some of the stigma of the alcoholic

This Symposium takes as its focus of interest the micro vasculature of the brain and includes considerations of blood flow, the properties of vessel walls and the control of flow and permeability. In addition perturbations that change the characteristics of the flow of materials are given attention. By changing the usual focus of interest, the organizers, Drs. Suddith and Eisenberg, have given a fresh outlook to the subject and now, by publication of the Proceedings, have arranged for wide availability of these interesting papers. Book excerpt: For more than 50 years, it has been recognized that diet influences cancer formation both in humans and in experimental animals. In fact, early investigators successfully retarded the onset of tumors in animals by dietary manipulation. Such findings led to an early optimism that cancer would prove to be yet another disease resulting from dietary imbalances and might thus be amenable to prevention or cure by appropriate nutritional changes. Subsequent studies showed that the influence of diet on cancer formation was not only very complex, it also did not appear to playa direct causative role in carcinogenesis. Thus during the mid-1950s scientific interest in diet and cancer greatly waned. By the early 1970s, however, a resurging interest in diet and cancer became evident. This field of activity has continued to grow. Yet for over 20 years, no comprehensive meeting has been held to summarize the major developments concerning dietary modification of carcinogenesis over a broad range of essential nutrients. To fill this void, a workshop was held on the role of essential nutrients in carcinogenesis from January 30 to February 1, 1985, in Bethesda, Maryland, under the auspices of the National Cancer Institute. This volume is a compilation of the presenta tions made at that meeting.
