Book excerpt: The first monograph on the acclaimed American environmental artist Lita Albuquerque, whose works belong to the Land Art generation, alongside James Turrell, Christo, Robert Smithson, and others. Known internationally for her temporary and ephemeral installations, paintings, and sculptures, Lita Albuquerque uses the most unusual and challenging of Earth’s surfaces as a canvas: Antarctica, the Arctic, Death Valley, the Mojave Desert, and South Dakota’s Badlands. She "paints" with a variety of mediums, including brightly clad humans or fabricated spheres, which form patterns over vast, wide-open spaces. This beautifully designed survey of her career highlights Stellar Axis, for which Albuquerque led an expedition to the South Pole to create the first installment of a groundbreaking global project. In addition to essays placing the artist’s works in the broader contexts of environmental art and science, Albuquerque provides personal reflections on her life’s work.

Book excerpt: Exhibition catalog for the Circle of Truth traveling art exhibition. Curated by Laura Hipke & Shane GuffoggForeword by: Randy Hipke Preface by: Paul RuschaThe Circle of Truth project is a visual game of Telephone, sometimes called a Rumor Game.49 artists, including Ed Ruscha, Shane Guffogg, Billy Al Bengston, Lita Albuquerque, Jim Morphesis, Charles Arnoldi, Robert Williams, and Ruth Weisberg, created works especially for the Circle of Truth project, in absolute secrecy over a period of nine years. The catalog dedicates a full spread to each of the 49 artists with color images of the art they received and responded to, the art they created, as well as an essay they wrote about their experience. The catalog provides a rare look at the thought processes and studio practices of these unique and private people. The Circle of Truth project is a wholly unique collaboration of 49 contemporary artists, each sequestered and unknown to one another, working in absolute secrecy. Taking a full nine years from launch to fruition, the Circle is a modern, visual take on a common childhood schoolroom exercise, wherein a secret message was whispered from student to student. Often referred to as the Rumor Game or Telephone. In the case of the Circle of Truth, the "whispered" message was imbued in the first painting, which was then delivered, along with a blank canvas, to the second artist. That artist was given no direction other than to find the Truth in in the previous painting, respond to what they perceived, and create a work using the blank canvas, that would go to the next artist, also unknown to them. And so, it went, through 49 artists, each confronted with a work from an unknown artist and a blank canvas. Participants were encouraged to work outside of their normal, comfortable styles. Once their creations were complete, each was asked to write an essay about their experience. The 49 works of art were created specifically for the Circle of Truth by 49 different and often disparateartists. Mostly oil paintings, all of the works measure 20 inches square by 2 inches deep, and are presented in chronological order. The Circle of Truth project opens a dialog regarding the nature of what we consider Truth to be, and evenwhether we think it exists. The Circle of Truth exhibition touches on a need that resinates deeply in the human psyche - access to meaningful, truthful contact with others. This truthful contact is the secret ingredient in the Circle of Truth project.Using paint and words the artists speak to the viewers candidly, providing a rare perspective into theirexperience and thought processes.Viewers of all ages and backgrounds, will be able to quickly understand and appreciate the meaning of the Circle of Truth. There are no prerequisites or any fundamental knowledge needed to appreciate and recognize Truth. The Circle relies simply on the viewers' inherent human nature. The LA-based Project was conceived by artist, Laura Hipke and co-curated with artist, Shane Guffogg. Exhibiting artists from Los Angeles, Arizona and New York include: Kim Abeles, Lisa Adams, Lita Albuquerque, Charles Arnoldi, Lisa Bartleson, Billy Al Bengston, Justin Bower, Virginia Broersma, Randall Cabe, Rhea Carmi, Greg Colson, Jeff Colson, Stanley Dorfman, Cheryl Ekstrom, Jimi Gleason, Rives Granade, Ron Griffin, Alex Gross, Shane Guffogg, Lynn Hanson, Doro Hofmann, Tim Isham, Kim Kimbro, Bari Kumar, Cal Lane, Margaret Lazzari, Mark Licari, Dan Lutzick, Deborah Martin, Susan McDonnell, Christopher Monger, Jim Morphesis, Andy Moses, Juan Carlos Munoz Hernandez, Gary Panter, Daniel Peacock, Bruce Richards, Michael Andrew Rosenfeld, Ed Ruscha, Eddie Ruscha, Paul Ruscha, John Scane, Vonn Sumner, Matthew Thomas, Alison Van Pelt, Michelle Weinstein, Ruth Weisberg, Robert Williams and Todd Williamson.

Book excerpt: Make to Know: From Spaces of Uncertainty to Creative Discovery will change the way you think about creativity. The book upends popular notions of innate artistic and visionary genius and probes instead the event of discovery that happens through the act of making. In contrast to the classic tale of Michelangelo, who 'saw the angel in the stone', the artists and designers Buchman interviews for this book talk about knowing their work as they engage in the doing. Make to Know explores the revelatory nature of the creative journey itself. As Buchman weaves together the vivid stories of his multiple conversations, we learn about writers of all stripes as they confront creative spaces of uncertainty 'the blank page'; about visual artists and what they understand from the materials they encounter; about designers and architects and the iterative process of solving problems; and about actors and musicians facing the surprises of improvisational performance. Make to Know is a book that will, ultimately, open a path to your own making, and, in the end, will have significant implications for how you live. Make to Know presents a way of thinking that democratizes creativity and uncovers a process that leads to knowing both ones work and oneself. It is relevant to anyone interested in why creativity matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new kind of style book with the inspiring and empowering message that “true style is self-acceptance,” profiling stylish influencers and celebrities who defy the cookie-cutter looks of today’s fashion magazines. The mother-daughter team behind the enormously popular websites StyleLikeU and What’s Underneath profile trendsetting artists and creatives of all ages, body types, races, and genders to embrace how self-expression and self-acceptance are the most important means of achieving personal style. Featuring people with original and creative style such as actress Lea DeLaria, who embraces her butch style with whimsy and humor; model and Miley Cyrus–muse Melanie Gaydos, who lives with a genetic disorder and who sees beauty as a state of being that she has achieved; designer Betsey Johnson, who continues to exert creative genius into her 70s; or Tallulah Willis, who has learned to keep a positive self-image in today’s negative tabloid culture. A wealth of photographs reflects each person’s unique look, while interviews reveal how their journey affects and informs their style. Throughout the book, the authors include inspiring manifestos such as: “Disentangle Style from Fashion”; “Dress to Express Your Inner Spirit”; “Beauty Is a State of Mind”; and “Turn Your Struggles Into Strengths”. By illustrating that personal style emanates from one’s comfort with oneself, this volume powerfully demonstrates that true style is what’s underneath.

Book The Art of Light Space

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jan Butterfield
  • Publisher : National Geographic Books
  • Release : 1996-06-01
  • ISBN : 0789201712
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Art of Light Space written by Jan Butterfield and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethereal and evocative, the art of Light and Space pushes the viewer beyond the everyday limits of perception. It takes many different forms and uses many different materials, ranging from natural daylight and scrim to glass, plywood, neon, and fire. It taps into far-ranging ideas and systems of knowledge, including alchemy, Buddhism, aerospace technology, witchcraft, astronomy, physiology, and phenomenology. Written by the foremost authority on the subject and based on more than two decades of research, The Art of Light and Space is the first book to provide an overview of this powerful and increasingly public art form. With rare photographs, extensive artist interviews, and her own insightful observations, Jan Butterfield vividly documents the history of this diverse and sometimes elusive work. Following a useful introduction that succinctly places the Light and Space movement in the larger context of modern art, the book is divided into ten chapters, each focused on one artist: Robert Irwin, James Turrell, Maria Nordman, Douglas Wheeler, Bruce Nauman, Eric Orr, Larry Bell, DeWain Valentine, Susan Kaiser Vogel, and Hap Tivey. Insightful portrait photographs by Jim McHugh open each chapter and capture the quirky individuality of these inexhaustibly creative men and women. The innovative graphic design emphasizes the artists' own words, both in sidebars and in the text, making their voices unusually accessible. No two artists have followed the same path, but in many cases the work has become increasingly approachable in recent years. Architects and urban planners have begun to incorporate Light and Space installations into public spaces ranging from the Old Post Office Building in Washington, D.C., to the new building in Pasadena, California. Corporate, nonprofit, and private collectors have commissioned numerous major works, including a solar fountain in Denver, a tea house in Paris, and a fire-and-steam sculpture on a busy Los Angeles street corner. The processes of creating the works seen here are as intriguing as the final results, and all are illuminated by the text, the illustrations, and the design of this provocative, invaluable volume.
