  • Publisher : Routledge

  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Portraits and Philosophy written by Hans Maes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits are everywhere. One finds them not only in museums and galleries, but also in newspapers and magazines, in the homes of people and in the boardrooms of companies, on stamps and coins, on millions of cell phones and computers. Despite its huge popularity, however, portraiture hasn’t received much philosophical attention. While there are countless art historical studies of portraiture, contemporary philosophy has largely remained silent on the subject. This book aims to address that lacuna. It brings together philosophers (and philosophically minded historians) with different areas of expertise to discuss this enduring and continuously fascinating genre. The chapters in this collection are ranged under five broad themes. Part I examines the general nature of portraiture and what makes it distinctive as a genre. Part II looks at some of the subgenres of portraiture, such as double portraiture, and at some special cases, such as sport card portraits and portraits of people not present. How emotions are expressed and evoked by portraits is the central focus of Part III, while Part IV explores the relation between portraiture, fiction, and depiction more generally. Finally, in Part V, some of the ethical issues surrounding portraiture are addressed. The book closes with an epilogue about portraits of philosophers. Portraits and Philosophy tangles with deep questions about the nature and effects of portraiture in ways that will substantially advance the scholarly discussion of the genre. It will be of interest to scholars and students working in philosophy of art, history of art, and the visual arts.

Book Portraits of Human Monsters in the Renaissance

Download or read book Portraits of Human Monsters in the Renaissance written by Touba Ghadessi and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the center of this interdisciplinary study are court monsters--dwarves, hirsutes, and misshapen individuals--who, by their very presence, altered Renaissance ethics vis-a-vis anatomical difference, social virtues, and scientific knowledge. The study traces how these monsters evolved from objects of curiosity, to scientific cases, to legally independent beings. The works examined here point to the intricate cultural, religious, ethical, and scientific perceptions of monstrous individuals who were fixtures in contemporary courts.

Book William Merritt Chase Portraits in oil

Download or read book William Merritt Chase Portraits in oil written by Ronald G. Pisano and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V. 1. "This gorgeous book, the first of a four-volume definitive catalogue, features Chase's stunning paintings in pastel, which constitute a major and previously understudied body of work by the artist; monotypes; painted tiles and plates; watercolors; and prints. Reconstructing Chase's oeuvre is a daunting task, as the artist left few records of any kind, and no documentation of his individual works exists. Furthermore, Chase's paintings and pastels have been forged in great numbers throughout the years, and many of these works still surface on the art market. Making this long-awaited volume even more valuable is a list of every known exhibition of Chase's work during the artist's lifetime, selected examples of major post-1917 exhibitions, and an essay on Chase's innovative pastel technique"--Jacket.

  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Face to Face written by Philip Vann and published by Sansom (Acc). This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core of this book is a detailed examination of 100 British self-portraits in the remarkable Ruth Borchard Collection. The earliest include works by Raymond Coxon, Ithell Colquhoun, Carel Weight and Anne Redpath from the first half of last century, but most are from the 1950s and 60s, helping evoke an entire period in British art and its myriad developing strands. All kinds of artistic influences are to be seen here - art school academicism, Camden Town, Expressionism, the Euston Road School, Kitchen Sink, continental Existentialism. The Collection is full of revelations of once relatively obscure artists who have gone on to become critically appreciated, along with artists of stature who have been unfairly neglected. Each portrait is accompanied by a text discussing the work in some detail, the artist's background and development and any relevant writings. In all, self-portraits by 220 artists are illustrated, mainly in color.
