Book Winslow Homer

Download or read book Winslow Homer written by Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and published by Clark Art Institute. This book was released on 2013 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winslow Homer (1836-1910) is one of the core figures of 19th-century American art. While most well-known for his oil paintings of Civil War scenes and the windswept Atlantic coastline, Homer's oeuvre encompasses a variety of themes, ranging from childhood games through the life-and-death struggles of man and nature. The Clark Art Institute holds one of the greatest collections of Homer's work across all media, including wood engravings, etchings, watercolors, drawings, and paintings from nearly all phases of his career. The collection was assembled predominately by Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956), who purchased his first Winslow Homer painting in 1915, followed by Two Guides in 1916 and maintained a passion for the artist throughout the rest of his collecting career, acquiring the small oil Playing a Fish in 1955. This book examines Robert Sterling Clark as a collector of Homer and the Clark's extensive holdings of the artist. Over thirty entries discuss the role of individual works in Homer's oeuvre and their larger significance to the art world. An illustrated checklist provides information on titles, dates, and media for the entire collection. Book Claude Lorrain the Painter as Draftsman

Download or read book Claude Lorrain the Painter as Draftsman written by Richard Rand and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great French artist Claude Lorrain (1600-1682)--for whom drawing was an integral part of the artistic process--spent most of his career in Italy, where he documented the beauty of the landscape and the splendor of classical ruins. This richly illustrated book examines the wide-ranging role the medium played throughout Claude's career. The book presents some of Claude’s most remarkable drawings, representing all aspects of his style and subject matter--from informal outdoor sketches of trees, rivers, and ruins to formal presentation drawings and elaborate compositional designs for paintings, many of which have never before been reproduced in color. A detailed and scholarly essay places them within the social and cultural contexts of their time and includes comparative illustrations of paintings and etchings to situate them within the artist's oeuvre. A selection of works from the Liber Veritatis (Book of Truth), a portfolio of highly finished drawings that the artist created to document his own painted compositions, is also included.

Book excerpt: "This exhibition catalogue explores the American reception of French artist Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), from 1893, when his first work entered a US museum, to the present. Its trajectory reaches from the collecting frenzy of the early twentieth century-promoted by philanthropist Katherine Seney Simpson and performer Loïe Fuller-to important museum acquisitions of the 1920s and 1930s. From there, it traverses the 1950s, when Rodin's reputation flagged, through to the artist's revival and recognition in the 1980s. Rodin's promoters include a dynamic cast of characters, each of whom played a crucial role in cementing his status. The book traces this story through approximately 50 sculptures and 20 drawings that cover Rodin's most iconic subjects and themes. They demonstrate his dexterity across media-his virtuosity in plaster, terracotta, bronze, and marble-as well as his expressive, colorful drawings, some of them relatively unknown, sparking new appreciation for his work and delight for readers"--

Book Pissarro s People

Download or read book Pissarro s People written by Richard R. Brettell and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KEYNOTE: This definitive portrait of Camille Pissarro by one of the world's foremost authorities on Impressionism and French painting reveals the deep connection between Pissarro's humanitarian concerns and his creative output. Throughout his career, the Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro produced a vast oeuvre of paintings, drawings, and prints inspired by his fascination with and commitment to politics. Many of these works reflect the tensions between his anarchist ideals and the realities of life in a capitalist society; however, most examinations of Pissarro have approached his art and politics as separate spheres. Published to accompany a major exhibition, this survey by a renowned expert on Impressionist painting offers a selection of canvases and works on paper that embody Pissarro's pictorial humanism at the highest level. Exhaustive archival study, interviews with surviving family members, and research drawn from thousands of newly discovered letters inform this rich and authoritative book. Including individual portraits of each of the family members Pissarro so often inserted into his paintings, it also examines his relationships with fellow artists, writers, neighbors, merchants, and domestic servants. The result is a refreshing and landmark reconsideration of the artist's magnificent body of work. AUTHOR: Richard R. Brettell has taught at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, Yale University, and Harvard University, and is presently Margaret M. McDermott Distinguished Chair of Art and Aesthetic Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas. He is the author of numerous books on painting and Impressionism.
