These are the essential elements of ‘A Portrait of Death’. Deputy Inspector Lola Gúzman and her husband are on holiday innocently wandering around Barcelona, enjoying the sights and experiencing the culture, when all hell breaks loose as blood and death seem to occur all around her. However, the killing spree isn’t just confined to the Catalonian capital, but spreads to other cities all around Spain growing ever more gruesome. The massacres do have one thing in common; they come accompanied by works of art. Art created by the brush of a master. Deputy Inspector Lola Gúzman teams up with Inspector Andrés López of the UCO, Spain’s elite organized crime department. They are confronted by no ordinary criminal, but a madman who will stop at nothing to produce the most grotesque paintings possible; paintings that will live long in the memory. Download or read book Checked Out written by Daniel Harris and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harris (Blood Feud, 2012) spins a rousing whodunit set in the lucrative supermarket business in this second series installment. Russell Riley, former president of the New England–-based Galetti Supermarkets, is back to sort out more familial unrest involving the greed and deceit running rampant throughout the “food brokerage business.” Unceremoniously fired after a three-decade tenure with Galetti Supermarkets for not keeping the business profitable throughout a “two-billion-dollar family food fight,” Riley receives a life-changing call from college-baseball buddy Bob Santone. Santone’s multistore Rhode Island supermarket family business, Food Basket, had been recently thrown into turmoil after his uncle Alex, the company’s extravagantly bankrolled CEO, was murdered in his living room. Santone dangles a lucrative one-year position in front of Riley in a desperate attempt to rescue the business from financial ruin. After conferring with business partner Bill Hartman; lifelong friend Arnold; doting wife Holly; and even Trip, CEO of Galetti Supermarkets, he accepts the challenge. Police Capt. Alan Cummings, who’s investigating the case, is ably assisted by hard-nosed Assistant District Attorney (and passionate love interest) Donna Mitchner, who is trailing suspected killer Bruno Jethroe, as well as other suspects, including Alex’s widow. The action builds as shady life-insurance policies, fiery courtroom antics, money laundering, and double-indemnity plots abound. Meanwhile, Harris keeps even his peripheral characters multidimensional and the dialogue sprightly. Without question, Riley is the star throughout and, together with the detectives, soon fleshes out the intricate details of the twisty murder plot. Harris, who draws great inspiration from over 30 years in the food business himself, once again writes an energetic, high-stakes yarn of greed and betrayal navigated by the charmingly quirky Russell Riley and leaves room for more possible antics to follow. A satisfying blend of intrigue and corporate mayhem helmed by a playful, foodie do-gooder.

Book Angels Dance on the Head of a Pin

Download or read book Angels Dance on the Head of a Pin written by GlenScott Thomas Copper and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-02 with total page 1038 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The empty Sky Room was an oval Victorian greenhouse restaurant atop Chicago’s about-to-be-destroyed 17-story Majestic Hotel. It was a penthouse covering three-fourths of the roof, which was surrounded by a safety parapet about three feet high, capped with glazed tile the green color of oxidized bronze. I expected that Willie would be waiting to leap out at me from behind one of the abandoned fake plants. All I heard over the storm was the murmuring of pigeons hiding in the chimney from the rain. I stood in the center of the room, figuring Willie must have secreted herself in her trench coat and hat against one of the ebony oak pilasters along the edge of the room. I waited for lightning to give away her position. It did. I saw her outside the glass walls through rivulets of rain, as sheet lightning illuminated the clouds over the lake, silhouetting Willie perched atop the parapet wall on the far corner of the building like some sort of gargoyle. The tails of her trench coat were flapping in the gale rising from Quincy Street. Her rain hat was gone and her drenched black curls were writhing on each side of her face. I ran to the door she’d left open and stepped toward her. She crouched like a swimmer on a starting block, staring at the bottom of the pool stories below... a very dark pool. A flashing traffic light jaundiced her face like some wild Hitchcock effect. She didn’t look at me, but down toward the blinking amber light. I stopped dead in my tracks, not sure what to do. She was perched only a few feet from where I stood. If I startled her, she could fall. I looked for a gentle way to get her attention. The low thunder from the sheet lightning over Lake Michigan growled in our faces. Suddenly a shock wave of light and heat, like a nuclear blast, erupted as lightning struck the boom of the demolition derrick. A gust of hot firey dragon breath belched from the crane. Willie bolted straight up, but she lost her footing on the parapet’s wet glazed cap. As she did, I leapt from the doorway and was able to catch hold of the tail of her trench coat just as her butt hit the edge and slipped over the side. I had the trench coat and the trench coat had Willie, but only by her arms. I was in a tug-of-war where both sides would win, or both sides would lose. Without thought, I collected all the material from her coat that I could and twisted it by ducking and pirouetting behind the parapet. This wrapped the makeshift hawser around my left forearm for a more-secure grip. I peered over the parapet where I could see the top of Willie’s head with her arms raised up above her like count Dracula about to turn into a bat and take flight. “Cross your arms!” I shouted, but there was no response.
