Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Night of the Mist, Eugene Heimler gave a moving and gripping account of his experiences as a prisoner in Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps. In this book, A Link in the Chain, he describes his eventful return journey from Auschwitz to his home in Hungary and how he reshaped his life since the end of the war.Heimler tells his stories poetically and vividly: He travels towards home on a buffer of a train, next to a German SS man who could easily push him off; He witnesses the rape of Kati, his travel companion by Russian brutes, with their machine guns aimed at him; Returning to Hungary, at the age of 23, he soon realizes that as a Jew he is still not wanted in his native country. The Red Army occupies Hungary and makes attempts on his life; He works as a journalist in the Social Democratic Headquarters and is arrested and charged with treason for an article he wrote; shots are aimed at him. When the Right Wing Smallholders win the Hungarian election in 1945, he contemplates leaving Hungary. An invitation to spy for the Communists in return for getting his poems published gets him into a momentary trap, but he outwits "Uncle Zoltan," his conspirator who unwittingly provides him with the Russian exit visa he still needs in order to go to London 'for a short visit'.In 1947 he travels to England. His newly married wife, Lily, follows him later. When in 1949 the Secret Police tortures his friends in Budapest, Heimler breaks down, as now all hope is lost for ever returning to his native homeland. His trials in England are manifold. Without speaking English, the couple lives on fear and tears. When Heimler arrived in England he was, mentally, still a very sick man. He describes the psychoanalytic treatment which he underwent at that time. After years of hardship and struggle he qualifies as a psychiatric social worker in 1953. He becomes County Psychiatric Social Work Organizer for the Middlesex County Council, and his experimental work made him one of the pioneers of 'community mental health' in England. His interviews with patients in pubs and parks have been the subject of much controversy.Heimler goes on to show not only how he affects his patients but also how they affect him, and how he grows through and with them. His account, in the latter part of the book, of the 'Hendon Experiment', in which he works hand in hand with the National Assistance Board in an attempt to solve the problem of the 'work-shy', and of his experiment in mental health with a General Practitioner, will be of particular interest to doctors, social workers and all who are concerned with the care of the mentally ill.

Book Classical Loop in Loop Chains

Download or read book Classical Loop in Loop Chains written by J.R. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ThiS is not only a book of instruction in chainmaking but it is also a work celebrating man's continuous creativity over thousands of years. At times something that man creates has far-reach ing effects; an example that quickly comes to mind is the wheel, which has enabled many devel opments, from pottery to computers. At this point it is important to note that these same wheels could not have been made without metal tools. From early Neolithic times on gold was a favorite choice in the making of jewelry. During the Neolithic period these "shining stones," probably alluvial, were prized. Actually gold was cold worked as if it were a stone. There is a surviving example of cold-worked gold from Catahuyuk (present day Turkey) estimated to have been made in 6500 B. C. There were only four metals on the earth's surface that were found in sufficient quantity to be used: gold, copper, silver, and meteoric iron. An understanding of the malleability of gold, and of the annealing effect of fire, changed jewelry making; new forms were found. Gold was no longer a piece of stone but a material that could be flattened and made very thin. Sheet and foil are the oldest forms of worked gold. The smiths' tools were stone, wood, and horn.

Book Multilateral Banks and the Development Process

Download or read book Multilateral Banks and the Development Process written by Vinod Thomas and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. When the links in the chain represent development projects, if individual projects fail to achieve their purpose, the development program’s effectiveness is compromised. When the chain’s links are strong and well-connected, the results are improved for the sector, country, and region. The role of multilateral banks is crucial; they inform the impact of development operations and support policymakers in decision making. This volume emphasizes that some crucial links in development tend to be systematically overlooked. In these matters, preoccupation with the immediate exigencies seems to come at the expense of attention to enduring problems—at a great cost to society. Development practitioners should apply policies that have produced results over time, ensuring that the links in the chain are strong, but too often they overlook those links—because of myopia, complexity, tradition, or special interests. This book will help policy makers and practitioners focus on the links that measure progress, apply lessons, and matter for lasting results.

Book excerpt: The Peace Chronicles is poet and scholar-activist Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz's second full-length collection. Documenting her last moments in the Vortex, the book moves from a searing betrayal by Tyrone (Love from the Vortex & Other Poems) to her equanimity with it. The poems also record her peacemaking with her father, the tireless work of her ancestors, and celebrates the freedom that brings her tranquility, contentment and joy. In this sophomore collection, readers are carried along a journey that asks: How can we learn from pain that grips us tightly? When does a moment seat itself between two halves of our lives, and when do we actually notice? When time is not a sufficient healer, what language allows us to fill our wounds with light, knowing they may never fully close? Where does love go to be laid to rest and when it rises again, do we name it resurrection, awakening, or reimagining?

Book excerpt: Lee Friedlander is celebrated for his ability to weave disparate elements from ordinary life into uncanny images of great formal complexity and visual wit. And few things have attracted his attention--or been more unpredictable in their effect--than the humble chain link fence. Erected to delineate space, form protective barriers and bring order to chaos, the fences in Friedlander's pictures catch filaments of light, throw disconcerting shadows and visually interrupt scenes without fully occluding them. Sometimes the steel mesh seems as delicate as lace; at others it appears as tough as snakeskin. In this book's 97 pictures, drawn from over four decades of work, it recurs as versatile, utilitarian and ubiquitous--not unlike the photographer himself.

Book The Service Profit Chain

Download or read book The Service Profit Chain written by James L. Heskett and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1997-04-10 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pathbreaking book, world-renowned Harvard Business School service firm experts James L. Heskett, W. Earl Sasser, Jr. and Leonard A. Schlesinger reveal that leading companies stay on top by managing the service profit chain. Why are a select few service firms better at what they do -- year in and year out -- than their competitors? For most senior managers, the profusion of anecdotal "service excellence" books fails to address this key question. Based on five years of painstaking research, the authors show how managers at American Express, Southwest Airlines, Banc One, Waste Management, USAA, MBNA, Intuit, British Airways, Taco Bell, Fairfield Inns, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, and the Merry Maids subsidiary of ServiceMaster employ a quantifiable set of relationships that directly links profit and growth to not only customer loyalty and satisfaction, but to employee loyalty, satisfaction, and productivity. The strongest relationships the authors discovered are those between (1) profit and customer loyalty; (2) employee loyalty and customer loyalty; and (3) employee satisfaction and customer satisfaction. Moreover, these relationships are mutually reinforcing; that is, satisfied customers contribute to employee satisfaction and vice versa. Here, finally, is the foundation for a powerful strategic service vision, a model on which any manager can build more focused operations and marketing capabilities. For example, the authors demonstrate how, in Banc One's operating divisions, a direct relationship between customer loyalty measured by the "depth" of a relationship, the number of banking services a customer utilizes, and profitability led the bank to encourage existing customers to further extend the bank services they use. Taco Bell has found that their stores in the top quadrant of customer satisfaction ratings outperform their other stores on all measures. At American Express Travel Services, offices that ticket quickly and accurately are more profitable than those which don't. With hundreds of examples like these, the authors show how to manage the customer-employee "satisfaction mirror" and the customer value equation to achieve a "customer's eye view" of goods and services. They describe how companies in any service industry can (1) measure service profit chain relationships across operating units; (2) communicate the resulting self-appraisal; (3) develop a "balanced scorecard" of performance; (4) develop a recognitions and rewards system tied to established measures; (5) communicate results company-wide; (6) develop an internal "best practice" information exchange; and (7) improve overall service profit chain performance. What difference can service profit chain management make? A lot. Between 1986 and 1995, the common stock prices of the companies studied by the authors increased 147%, nearly twice as fast as the price of the stocks of their closest competitors. The proven success and high-yielding results from these high-achieving companies will make The Service Profit Chain required reading for senior, division, and business unit managers in all service companies, as well as for students of service management.
