Springfield, one might say, was permeated with the spirit of Lincoln. The house where I went to school with other little Springfield girls was the house in which he had been married. The desk in a corridor of the chief hotel, upon which we did not hesitate to perch at class dances, had been Lincoln's. The house where Lincoln had lived, and where his children had been born, was Open to the public. One took country cousins to see its interior. The monu ment where he slept dominated the cemetery. The bristling groups of bronze soldiers at the four corners of the shaft were of endless interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Illinois in the Development of Abraham Lincoln Mr. Arnold went on to show how central to the Union Illinois had become, and he wrote of the growing importance of Illinois geo graphically, but he did not in any definite way undertake to answer his question, whether it was well for Lincoln to have lived here, other than with a judicial qualification. Perhaps he was fortunate in select ing Illinois as his home. It seems to me that the time has come for a more positive answer. I believe that Lincoln would have been a great man if he had lived in another State, but that Illinois contributed to his making some ele ments which were of particular significance, and which may have been indispensable to his preparation for the particular work to which God and the Nation called him. Book The Lincoln Collection of the Illinois State Historical Library Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lincoln Collection of the Illinois State Historical Library Classic Reprint written by Paul McClelland Angle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln Collection of the Illinois State Historical Library In letters and documents of the war years, Lincoln's humanity shines from the drab horror of the conflict. A poor widow, by the name of Baird, he informed Stanton on March 1, 1864, has a son in the army, that for some offence has been sentenced to serve a long time without pay or at most, with very little pay. I do not like this punishment of withholding pay - it falls so very hard upon poor families. Whereupon he ordered that the soldier be allowed to re-enlist on the usual terms. Again, on March 15, 1864, he wrote to Stanton asking him to see the gallant Drummer-boy, Robert H. Hendershot, whose history is briefly written on the fine drum presented him which he now carries. He must have a chance, and if you can find any situation suitable to him, I shall be obliged. Perhaps the most revealing item in the entire collection, however, is a Small pass, dated April 9, 1864, permitting John Ehler, a boy 10 years old, to join a certain soldier in the 6lst New York Infantry in the Army of the Potomac. On the back are these words, written two days later: They say that by the destruction of a bridge this boy has been unable to pass on this. Might it not be renewed for the little fel low? A. Lincoln. Book Lincoln the Gift of Illinois to Mankind

Download or read book Lincoln the Gift of Illinois to Mankind written by Alexander Sullivan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln, the Gift of Illinois to Mankind: An Address HE subject I am to respond to is one of the easiest and one of the most difficult. It is easy because of the great abun dance and the great diversity of themes which flow from the mere mention of Lincoln's name. His life will be searched in vain for a day or an event barren of human interest. But the sentiment is a difficult one, because the many-sided qualifications of the man, the great depth and breadth of his knowledge and achievements, and the exceptional manner in which his life is intertwined with all the events of his own time and with the eternal prin ciples of justice and freedom, would make it impossible in a long address to do more than give a mere flashlight vision of his marvelous career. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln; Early Days in Illinois: Reminiscences of Different Persons Who Became Eminent in American History So many lives of great men have been writtenby those who never knew them, Lincoln, for example, and so much rhetoric thrown around their charac teristic features that we do not know them. It is even thus with him. Or, if it be the orator or lecturer on the life of Lincoln, so many flourishes are thrown about him that his characteristic fea tures are spoiled. To send him skyward is to spoil him. Will the writers and speakers leave us the Lincoln we knew and loved with all his faults and inconsistencies? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln Room: University of Illinois Library, Memorial the Class of 1901 The year Nineteen Hundred and Nine is memorial year for Abraham Lincoln, in which many phases of history concerning him and his times will he considered, and the nation's sorrow at his untimely death may justly claim a place. We read his speeches with pleasure, laugh at his jokes, take pride in his statesmanship, glory in his manhood, marvel at his patience, and are glad to honor his memory, while we almost forget the somber mountings from which the gems gleam. During the period when the American public is, specifically, reviving the Lincoln memories, it is proper to attempt, in a slight degree at least, an appreciation of the colossal sorrow which culminated in the death of the Emancipator.
