Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and Men of War-Times: Some Personal Recollections of War and Politics During the Lincoln Administration Abraham Lincoln achieved more in American states manship than any other President, legislator, or diplomat in the history of the Republic; and what he achieved brought no borrowed plumes to his crown. Compelled to meet and solve the most momentous problems of our government, and beset by confused counsels and intensi fied, jealousies, he has written the most lustrous records of American history; and his name and fame must be immortal while liberty shall have worshipers in any land. To aid to a better understanding of this noblest Roman of them all is the purpose of these chapters; and if they shall, in the humblest degree, accomplish that end, I shall be more than content. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War A valued friend, who ranks as one of the ablest of American critics, to whom I have submitted these Recol lections for the purpose Of deciding whether they should, or should not, be given book publication, has just written me as follows: I have read the entire manuscript with very much interest and pleasure. It contains a great deal that is new to me and, I venture to say, that will be new to nine hundred and ninety-nine out of a thousand of the generation who took no active part in the affairs of the country in war times. Valuable side-light is thrown by your disclosures on some of the hidden springs and inner workings Of the times, and it appears to me that it is worthy to be preserved on account of its intrinsic value. In the hope that the reader may concur in the Opinion of this most excellent gentleman, this volume is given to the public. Book President Lincoln as War Statesman Classic Reprint

Download or read book President Lincoln as War Statesman Classic Reprint written by Arthur Latham Conger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from President Lincoln as War Statesman The views of these professedly military histories, mingled in varying proportions, we find swallowed whole by the writers of many general histories who repeat, parrot-like, jibes against Lincoln's imbecile vacillation or bull-headed blundering, as the case may be, without attempting to understand or to analyze the points under discussion. Amid all this harsh condemnation the singu lar fact stands out that the common people, in whose good sense and judgment Lincoln so firmly trusted, have returned the compliment; they have not only refused to accept the quips of the captions critics but, on the con trary, as James Schouler so aptly puts it, see more colossal as time recedes, the figure of Abraham Lincoln, towering above his contemporaries. Book The Words of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Words of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Abraham Lincoln and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Words of Abraham Lincoln No man has ever lived in America whose life has been more closely identified with the common people, and who yet has been more grandly influential in shaping the affairs of the nation. In the most critical period of her existence he saved her from calamity and ruin. His hand removed the foul stain of slavery, and made the Stars and Stripes in very truth the flag of the free. It seems a marvel, even here in America, that a poor, ignorant boy could aspire to the highest honor within the gift of the people; but more marvelous still, that a country lawyer could grapple with the tremendous problems which had baffled the Wisdom and skill of America's greatest states men for almost half a century, and solve them successfully. Wholly unskilled in war, he conducted the greatest war of modern times and brought it to a successful issue. With unerring judgment he found the correct solution of the most involved problems of law, finance, and diplomacy. It is inconceivable that a man's life could suddenly expand from the narrow round Of private life to comprehend all the varied and tremendous responsibilities of this high position without previous preparation. Daniel Webster, on the night before his Reply to Hayne, when asked why he was not making preparation for this the greatest event of his life, replied, that for twenty years he had been preparing for it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House Divided: The Story of Lincoln and the Civil War When Abraham was four years old, the family moved to another farm in Kentucky, about ten miles distant. Life in the Kentucky wilderness was harsh and severe. When game was plentiful, the family ate freely of grouse, turkey, bear, and deer. When it was scarce the family board consisted mainly of corn meal and potatoes. The members of the Lincoln household toiled long and hard from dawn until sunset. Even little Abe had his regular chores to perform each day - carrying water, filling the wood box, pick ing wild berries and grapes, and riding the horse when his father plowed.
