Book excerpt: The purpose of this program is to determine the centers of the high-energy linac (HEL) BPMs using beam information, and to compare this information with the existing surveying information. It measures directly and quantitatively the amount of quad steering in each of the HEL quads. It is hoped that this program is all that is needed to make this measurement This procedure is based on the observation of the beam position in a BPM downstream of a quad while changing the magnetic field in that quad. If the beam is centered in the quad, then this change will have no effect on the trajectory of the beam. However, if the beam is off center at the quad, changing the field will steer the beam. This measurement therefore can be used to measure the position of the beam in the quad under examination.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses the performance of the logarithmic amplifier electronics system used with stripline BPMs to measure electron and positron beam positions at the APS linac. The 2856-MHz, S-band linac accelerates 30-nsec pulses of 1.7 A of electrons to 200 MeV, and focuses them onto a positron conversion target. The resulting 8 mA of positrons are further accelerated to 450 MeV by the positron linac. Beam position resolutions of 50[mu]m are easily obtainable in both the electron and positron linacs. The resolution of the 12-bit A/D converters limits the ultimate beam positron resolution to between 20 and 30[mu]m at this time.

Book excerpt: Performance of the stripline beam position monitor (BPM) at Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) was experimentally characterized. The design of the BPM and its local receive were discussed briefly. The dynamic range of the BPM was measured from a few pC to an 0.5 nC charge without saturation. The resolution of the BPM was measured to be 150[micro]m for a 200 pC charge electron bunch. The BPM sum signal was also used to investigate the timing jitter between the RF gun driving laser system and the ATF linac RF system, the sensitivity for timing jitter measurement was measured to be 6m V/ps.
