  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Lightning written by Derek M. Elsom and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few phenomena inspire more awe than lightning. Streaking across the sky, it daunts us with its power and amazes us with its beauty. In Lightning, Derek M. Elsom explores this natural phenomenon and traces the long history of our study of it. From early civilizations’ assumptions that it was the work of gods, through eighteenth-century scientific analyses (and, yes, Ben Franklin’s kite), Elsom tells about our efforts to understand and explain lightning. He explores the many surprising folklore beliefs about lightning protection and contrasts these with today's scientific approaches. Alongside scientific explorations, he also tracks the path of lightning through our culture, from myths and legends to art and design. In addition, Elsom offers handy tips for avoiding getting struck by lightning. Beautifully illustrated with stunning photographs and artistic renderings, this striking book will appeal equally to weather buffs and folklorists, scientists and artists.

Book Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird

Download or read book Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird written by J. W. Langley and published by Montag Press. This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nelson Mandela is about to die. Again. Black militants and white nationalists prepare for war as a politician's daughter is killed in mysterious circumstances. Incredulous Moshoeshoe- Goth DJ and part-time isangoma-is hired to find out what really happened. Forced to partner with a tragically uncool white Pentecostal preacher, Incredulous must use his knowledge of local lore, his occult powers and his connections in the alternative scene to prevent a South African civil war. Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird is like Frank Peretti making out with Samuel L Jackson at a Black Panther rally. It's Dracula for DJs, Supernatural for the subcontinent. Afrocentric urban fantasy with a Spotify playlist for a chapter list and monsters as fresh as a highveld thunderstorm. Praise-songs for Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird 'Langley's blend of pop culture, humour, politics and horror is a blast and reading it is to be air dropped directly into a wild world, fizzing with energy and ideas. While the rest of us keep mining the same old monsters time and again, he opens up a rich cave of folklore too long ignored. Recommended.' -- Peter Laws, author of Purged and The Frighteners 'A unique and thoroughly engaging tale, sardonically animated and richly crafted as only JW Langley can. It's Africa, her lore, and her people, through an imaginative lens of irreverent reverence.' -- Ashton Nyte, author of Waiting for a Voice. 'The motto of the Montag Press Collective is 'Books Worth Burning, ' and Jonty Langley's modern African folk-tale Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird fits the bill perfectly. In its brilliant mélange of traditional African folk characters such as the Tokoloshe and the eponymous Lightning Bird himself with a cross-section of diverse twenty-first-century subculture figures, from Goths to racist punk cops, from Marxist-antifascists to Afrikaner politicians, Incredulous Moshoeshoe (what a sublime name!) and the Lightning Bird has literally everything that the firemen from Station 451 would hate. Which makes it the perfect book for you - who follow Montag and Clarisse into the forest - to pick up. And memorise.' -- Charles S. Kraszewski, author of Accomplices, You Ask? 'This is the book Stephen King would have written if he was possessed by the mischievous spirit of Douglas Adams, and was also an African, a poet and more than a little mentally disturbed.' -- Helgard deBarros, author of The Second Skin. 'This is a terrific book. JW Langley plays with language like a dolphin plays with waterspouts - not many writers could come up with a simile like, "Fat and slow as a successful lion". Incredulous Moshoeshoe riffs on music, theology, politics, and much else besides. I don't know whether to describe it as divine humanism or humane divinity. Either way, it's brilliant.' -- Mark Woods, author of Does the Bible Really Say That? 'To borrow a phrase, this guy can "preach like a motherfucker". Italics mine, because it's a line I wish I'd written. The soul-flaying juxtaposition of sun-scoured sand and silver black glitter perfectly evokes the searing unknown and dim- remembered familiarity permeating JW Langley's aggressively alien South Africa. Like a child possessed by dark and alien things, the novel wears a skin that can only hint at what writhes inside. Incredulous Moshoeshoe navigates a world both modern and ancient, as open as a drawn gun and as closed off as beaten wife. There are old stories here, told in a new and incomparable manner that demands as much as it promises. A relentless, kinetic tale of monsters inhabiting the darkness within and without, rich with spitfire dialogue and unforgettable characters. Memorable as dancefloor blowjob.' -- Paul d. Miller, author of Albrecht Drue, ghostpuncher.

Book Zulu Vampire

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pat Stevens
  • Publisher : Austin Macauley Publishers
  • Release : 2023-12-08
  • ISBN : 1035807246
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Zulu Vampire written by Pat Stevens and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2018 an explosive expose revealed that South African newspapers were disseminating fake news, this came as no surprise to police Captain Jake Smit, who had been the victim of false Sunday Siren allegations. Jake was an Afrikaner who’d been brought up amongst the Zulu, he spoke Zulu fluently and was recognized by police, as an authority on Zulu traditions. Along with Peter Khumalo his trusted Zulu Sergeant, Captain Jake Smit kept the peace in rural Umuzi, now he had to deal with an outbreak of killing that froze the district in fear. Because the slaughter was reputed to be the work of the Impundulu, a legendary Lightning Bird that struck lightning off its talons, and fed off human blood. Compounding the problem was Sunday Siren editor Mondli Mampara, who was diverting attention from an illegal organ harvesting ring, by publishing ‘death squad’ stories about the investigating police captain. So Jake Smit approached journalist Marlin Madison, who discovered illegal organ harvesting by French transplant Doctor Silvio Sarkoy, covered up by the Sunday Siren. Resulting in editor Mondli Mampara being dismissed, and an end to the fake news ‘Cato Manor death squad,’ hopefully this has taught the media a lesson. In 2023 Reporters sans Borders press index, rated South Africa freer than Britain or Australia, also most of Europe and America. Yet the International Bar Association and the International Association of Prosecutors, are beginning to wonder if the local system of media self-regulation and internal control, is truly fair comment or merely a pseudonym for media dictatorship and social control?

Book The Nation s Bounty

Download or read book The Nation s Bounty written by Nontsizi Mgqwetho and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautiful study of the incredible life of Nontsizi Mgqwetho For nearly a decade Nontsizi Mgqwetho contributed poetry to a Johannesburg newspaper, Umteteli wa Bantu, the first and only female poet to produce a substantial body of work in Xhosa. Apart from what is revealed in these writings, very little is known about her life. She explodes on the scene with her swaggering, urgent, confrontational woman's poetry on 23 October 1920, sends poems to the newspaper regularly throughout the three years from 1924 to 1926, withdraws for two years until two final poems appear in December 1928 and January 1929, then disappears into the shrouding silence she first burst from. Nothing more is heard from her, but the poetry she left immediately claims for her the status of one of the greatest literary artists ever to write in Xhosa, an anguished voice of an urban woman confronting male dominance, ineffective leadership, black apathy, white malice and indifference, economic exploitation and a tragic history of nineteenth-century territorial and cultural dispossession. The Nation's Bounty contains the original poems alongside English translations by Jeff Opland. It was the first of a number of new titles planned for release in the African Treasury Series, a premier collection of texts by South Africa's pioneers of African literature and written in indigenous languages. First published by Wits University Press in the 1940s, the series provided a voice for the voiceless and celebrated African culture, history and heritage. It continues to make a contribution by supporting current efforts to empower and develop the status of African languages in South Africa.
