Book Light Level as a Potential Limiting Factor in the Growth of Zostera Marina Eelgrass in the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Light Level as a Potential Limiting Factor in the Growth of Zostera Marina Eelgrass in the Pacific Northwest written by Mark Justin Hylarides and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Abstract: Eelgrasses serve as important nursery habitats in the Pacific Northwest for diverse marine life and are widely recognized as indicators of coastal ecological health. Seasonal differences in respiration and Photosynthesis-Irradiance (P-I) relationships of a population of marine eelgrass Zostera marina in Rosario Bay, WA were investigated in order to characterize its growth potential in different seasons. The local light availability in situ for each season was also estimated by combining direct light measurements under different conditions with hourly weather and tide measurements. Measurement of the P-I relationship of blade sections and extrapolation to whole plants demonstrated that sufficient light is present even in the lowest-light season (winter) so that clean eelgrass is able to at least support its metabolism by photosynthesis and experience net growth. However, epiphytic algae living on the blades of Z. marina likely reduces its access to light, especially in summer, and could potentially lead to light limiting conditions.

Book Eelgrass Zostera Marina L Restoration in the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Eelgrass Zostera Marina L Restoration in the Pacific Northwest written by Ronald M. Thom and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We summarize eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) restoration and mitigation project results and recommendations of transplant practitioners in the Pacific Northwest since 1990. Our purpose is to provide current information for programs considering eelgrass restoration by providing a synthesis of what practitioners and researchers have learned through experimentation and monitoring of discrete projects throughout western Washington and British Columbia. Reports, papers, personal communications, and a workshop were used to gather data on these projects. Our general null hypothesis is that eelgrass can be restored to match natural eelgrass meadows in terms of structure and function. We conclude that, under favorable site conditions, and if the reason for the initial loss of eelgrass is understood and corrected, that eelgrass can be restored. However, eelgrass restoration science is hampered by knowledge gaps, reducing restoration success. For example, mechanisms for recent eelgrass loss in the region are not obvious, which suggests that the scientific understanding of eelgrass biology and ecosystem conditions is inadequate to support environmental management actions in our region. To improve restoration project success in the Pacific Northwest requires further research knowledge gaps, closely evaluating the performance of restoration projects, and disseminating information for use by future generations. Workshop participants identified an immediate need to construct a clearinghouse of eelgrass restoration and monitoring results that provides summaries and data from eelgrass enhancement efforts. Furthermore, we found that it was difficult to summarize the relative performance of the more than 30 projects reviewed because of variations in goals, project size, planting methods employed, performance criteria, duration of monitoring, intensity of monitoring, and data interpretation. Hence, we recommend that standard monitoring protocols be developed and results from .these methods be reported through the clearinghouse and periodic meetings.

Book Global Seagrass Research Methods

Download or read book Global Seagrass Research Methods written by F.T. Short and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-11-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thorough and informative volume presents a set of detailed, globally applicable techniques for seagrass research. The book provides methods for all aspects of seagrass science from basic plant collection to statistical approaches and investigations of plant-animal interaction. The emphasis is on methods that are applicable in both developing and developed countries. The importance of seagrasses in coastal and near shore environments, and ultimately their contribution to the productivity of the world's oceans, has become increasingly recognised over the last 40 years.Seagrasses provide food for sea turtles, nearly 100 fish species, waterfowl and for the marine mammals the manatee and dugong. Seagrasses also support complex food webs by virtue of their physical structure and primary production and are well known for their role as breeding grounds and nurseries for important crustacean, finfish and shell fish populations. Seagrasses are the basis of an important detrital food chain. The plants filter nutrients and contaminants from the water, stabilise sediments and act as dampeners to wave action. Seagrasses rank with coral reefs and mangroves as some of the world's most productive coastal habitat and strong linkages among these habitats make the loss of seagrasses a contributing factor in the degradation of the world's oceans.Contributors from around the world provide up-to-date methods for comparable collection of ecological information from both temperate and tropical seagrass ecosystems.

Book Managing Seagrasses for Resilience to Climate Change

Download or read book Managing Seagrasses for Resilience to Climate Change written by Mats Björk and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seagrasses are flowering plants that thrive in shallow oceanic and estuarine waters around the world. Although there are only about 60 species of seagrasses worldwide, these plants play an important role in many shallow, near-shore, marine ecosystems. There is growing evidence that seagrasses are declining globally because of anthropogenic impacts. This paper presents an overview of seagrasses, the impacts of climate change, and other threats to seagrass habitats. Finally, it proposes tools and strategies for managers to help support seagrass resilience.

Book Under what Conditions Could Eelgrass Measurably Drawdown Carbon

Download or read book Under what Conditions Could Eelgrass Measurably Drawdown Carbon written by Tyler T. Tran and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seagrass meadows, common to coastal habitats, have been identified as potential short-term refugia for calcifying organisms from ocean acidification (OA). In nearshore, soft-sediment habitats of the Salish Sea, eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) is the dominant seagrass species, and several studies have found that eelgrass is effective at taking up inorganic carbon and maybe carbon-limited, potentially increasing uptake potential in the future. However, irradiance levels vary throughout a day and can therefore influence rates of carbon uptake and release through the relative rates of photosynthesis and respiration. Eelgrass meadows vary in terms of meadow size, shoot density and morphology, and water residence time which could affect rates of carbon uptake of eelgrass meadows and their influence on localized water chemistry. We conducted a series of mesocosm experiments manipulating pCO2, irradiance, and leaf area index (LAI)to assess how these factors interact and contribute to OA variability in the nearshore environment.

Book Nitrogen Resource Analysis and Modelling of an Eelgrass Zostera Marina L Meadow in Izembek Lagoon Alaska

Download or read book Nitrogen Resource Analysis and Modelling of an Eelgrass Zostera Marina L Meadow in Izembek Lagoon Alaska written by Frederick Tilton Short and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen limitation in beds of eelgrass, Zostera marina L., was examined by correlating plant standing stock and sediment nitrogen supplies, by measurement of nitrogen uptake in eelgrass roots and leaves, and by experimental manipulation of plant-nitrogen interaction. Eelgrass standing stock and sediment nitrogen across an eelgrass meadow were analyzed. Correlation was found between the integrated interstitial ammonium pool and shoot density and other morphological characteristics. A model of eelgrass growth predicted the effect of nitrogen utilization on biomass production and growth rates; nitrogen limitation controlled growth throughout the summer in ammonium-poor eelgrass beds but only at the peak growth periods in ammonium-rich areas. Prediction of nitrogen enrichment effects similar to literature findings confirmed the impact of nitrogen limitation. Simulation of the spatial and seasonal influences of nitrogen and light as controls on eelgrass growth demonstrated the recurrent effects of dominant environmental limitations within an eelgrass meadow.
