Book The Teaching of Elementary School Gymnastics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Elementary School Gymnastics Classic Reprint written by Wilbur Pardon Bowen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Elementary School Gymnastics Primitive life. - During all these ages our ancestors lived a life of the most strenuous physical exertion. As far back as. Savage life in the temperate zone can be traced, the men hunted, fished, carried on war, and took part in religious ceremonies; the women made the clothing and the shelter, prepared the food, and made all the utensils needed in their work, besides caring for the children and the domestic animals. These two types of bodily exercise are quite different; that of the men was severe to the highest degree for a time, with periods of complete rest between; a type of exercise we now call athletic. That of the women was less severe but more steady and continuous; of the type of manual labor. As a result of these occupations both men and women were strong and vigorous; they lived and thrived in spite of unsanitary conditions and exposure to all kinds of weather and hardship. These two types of bodily exercise, carried on so vigorously for so many successive genera tions, no doubt did much to develop the two types of bodily form and proportions that men and women now inherit. Civilized life - If we continue to study the occupations of our ancestors down to a later day, we find that they changed their habits of life a little from time to time, but until very lately they still led lives of great bodily activity. The pioneers of the early colonies along our Atlantic coast, and even those who settled our own state in the early part of the last century, were people of strong physique, manv of them not a whit inferior in strength and endurance to the savages who lived here before them. One hundred years ago fully 95970 of the population of the United States lived in the country, and the same was true of the middle west fifty years ago. Men cleared the forest with the axe, sowed and planted by hand, 'cut their grain with sickles, and threshed it with fiails. Women did all the household work, including all of the dairy and laundry work, made all the clothing, and not far back they also made the cloth from which the clothing was made. Pioneer life called for muscular work and developed a sturdy race of people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light Gymnastics for Elementary Schools At no time and in no country has so much attention been given to physical education as in ancient Greece. Not only did the Greeks aim thereby to attain strength, health and vitality, but their desire also was to develop a mentally healthy, beautiful, well-proportioned people; the best citizen for the country in time of peace and the best, soldier in time of war. The high esteem in which bodily exercises were held in old Hellas is shown by the festivals which were held at regular intervals throughout the country, in which physical exercises were given the most prominent part. The best known of these festivals were bold near the city of Olympia, viz.: the Olympian games. The principal events consisted of running, jumping, throwing the discus, throwing the spear and wrestling. These five events constituted what is known as the Pentathlon. The order and prominence given each is not known, but it is believed that wrestling was the last. Great honors were bestowed upon the victorious youth; his name was proclaimed throughout the country and monuments were often erected to him in his native city. The excellent results obtained by the careful training of the Grecian youth maybe estimated by the record of phayllus, of croton, a Gracia colony, who executed a jump (probably a hop, step and jump) of 55 feet, at oue of the festivals, an olympiade, aud of another gymnast whose record was 52 feet, while the best hop, step and jump of modern times is 4? feet 7 inches, which was attained by a professional gymnast in England. The Romans of old rank far behind the Grecians in physical training. They never placed so high an educational value upon gymnastics as the Greeks did. Of greatest importance to the Romans was the training of capable soldiers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Light Gymnastics: A Guide to Systematic Instruction in Physical Training IT is now generally admitted by educators that the pupils in our institutions of learning need some kind of systematized physical training in connection with their mental work. The action of the foremost educators in the world, the faculties of our leading colleges, permitting the expenditure of many hundreds of thousands of dollars on magnificent gymnasiums, Strengthens the assertion. The example thus set must be and is being followed by the public and private schools. They are gradually introducing gymnastics as a part of their course of study. Teachers are responsible for the physical condition of their pupils while in their charge. If they are ignorant of the simple laws of health and gymnastics, their pupils will suffer on account of it. It may be said in the teachers' defense, however, that Should they desire the knowledge that would fit them to teach physical training from professional teachers of the subject, they could spare neither the time nor money to acquire it; consequently they must obtain this from books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gymnastic Exercises for Elementary Schools: Supplemented by Fancy Steps and Games In selecting and arranging the material for this book, I have tried to meet the demand especially of those teachers who are being more and more called upon to add to their curriculum this branch of physical education, namely, gymnastics. Several years of experience in elementary grades and in normal teaching have shown what the grade teacher, as well as the normal pupil, would find essential and helpful in teaching gymnastics. A teacher's text-book to meet the general needs must be of such a nature that the simple and combined movements which it describes may be easily understood and accurately reproduced. This is provided for by definite descriptions of all movements, positions, and combinations, and by illustrations of many of the fundamental positions. The use of technical terms is reduced to a minimum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
