Book Politics of Worship in the Contemporary Middle East

Download or read book Politics of Worship in the Contemporary Middle East written by Andreas Bandak and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sainthood in Fragile States, a wide range of social scientists explore the contested role of sainthood in the contemporary Middle East. By expanding the notion of sainthood to cover both the religious and secular ways of dealing with extraordinary events, people and things, the volume offers new insights into the way sainthood is embedded in various levels of everyday life, as well as national and international politics. The case studies highlight how fragility as a central aspect of sainthood is a productive force that often consolidates tales of the extraordinary, and is also the source of contesting social identities. Contributors include: Andreas Bandak, Mikkel Bille, Jürgen Frembgen, Sune Haugbolle, Angie Heo, Daniella Kuzmanovic, Edith Szanto, and Pnina Werbner.

Book The Miracles of Our Lady of Rocamadour

Download or read book The Miracles of Our Lady of Rocamadour written by Marcus Graham Bull and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1999 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval miracle stories from a major pilgrim destination in 12c France. In the second half of the twelfth century Rocamadour developed an international reputation as a centre of devotion to the Virgin Mary, drawing pilgrims from Spain, Italy, Germany, England and the Latin East as well as France, as witnessed by the 126 miracle stories written there in 1172-3, here translated for the first time. Reflecting and enhancing Rocamadour's status (aristocratic figures feature prominently), they throw light on many of the dangers faced by medieval men and women: illness and injury; imprisonment; warfare; arbitrary justice; and natural disasters. In his introduction Marcus Bull identifies issues which the collection helps to elucidate, and assesses thevalue of the text as source material, particularly in view of the lack of other chronicles from southern France for the period. He makes comparisons with other texts, such as the miracle collection compiled at the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury, and argues that the monks of Rocamadour asserted their importance through the miracles, in the face of competition from neighbouring monastic communities. MARCUS BULL is Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Professor of Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Book Lady of All Nations the Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin

Download or read book Lady of All Nations the Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin written by Mohamed el-Fers and published by Mohamed el-Fers. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apparitions of the Lady of all Nations in Amsterdam: Ida is just twelve years old when a beautiful Lady in a dazzling light appears to her. The child immediately recognizes her as the Blessed Virgin, clad in a long white dress with a cream-colored sash. She is pregnant and just smiles at the child that is basking in Her light. That very same day and hour in Fatima, the last of six separate sightings of Maria apparitions takes place. The children of Fatima and Ida see a bilocate apparition. That the Amsterdam Apparitions received approval with the consent of Benedict XVI, then Cardinal Ratzinger, and the acceptance of the late John Paul II in 2002, is just one of the many miracles foretold by that Lady. The magic formula the Blessed Virgin gave in Amsterdam is believed to be capable of saving the church and the world.

Book Exemplary Life

  • Author : Andreas Bandak
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2022-06-29
  • ISBN : 148754295X
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Exemplary Life written by Andreas Bandak and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on over five years of ethnographic fieldwork in Syria, Exemplary Life focuses on the life of a Damascus woman, Myrna Nazzour, who serves as an aspirational figure in her community. Myrna is regarded by her followers as an exemplary figure, a living saint, and the messages, apparitions, stigmata, and oil that have marked Myrna since 1982 have corroborated her status as chosen by God. Exemplary Life probes the power of examples, the modelling of sainthood around Myrna’s figure, and the broader context for Syrian Christians in the changing landscape of the Middle East. The book highlights the social use of examples such as the ones inhabited by Myrna’s devout followers and how they reveal the broader structures of illustration, evidence, and persuasion in social and cultural settings. Andreas Bandak argues that the role of the example should incite us to investigate which trains of thought set local worlds in motion. In doing so, Exemplary Life presents a novel frame for examining how religion comes to matter to people and adds a critical dimension to current anthropological engagements with ethics and morality.

Book The Miracle of Right Thought

Download or read book The Miracle of Right Thought written by Orison Swett Marden and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We've all heard about the power of positive thinking, but for many people, that's easier said than done. How do we train ourselves to indulge only in "right thought"? Orison Swett Marden-the preeminent self-help expert of the early 20th century and a forerunner of Dale Carnegie and Norman Vincent Peale, Stephen R. Covey and Anthony Robbins-had the answer almost a century ago, and his words still ring true today. In this companion volume to his Peace, Power, and Plenty (also available from Cosimo) and first published in 1910, Marden discusses why success and happiness are your destiny, how to expect great things of yourself, how to encourage yourself through self-suggestion, why wallowing in "the blues" is a "crime," how fear paralyzes us, and avoiding the kind of thinking that mentally poisons us. If you're looking for success-however you define it-you owe yourself the advice of this classic book. American writer and editor ORISON SWETT MARDEN (1850-1924) was born in New England and studied at Boston University and Andover Theological Seminary. In 1897, he founded Success Magazine.

Book A Diagram for Fire

  • Author : Jon Bialecki
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2017-03-21
  • ISBN : 0520294203
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book A Diagram for Fire written by Jon Bialecki and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the work that miracles do in American Charismatic Evangelicalism? How can miracles be unanticipated and yet worked for? And finally, what do miracles tell us about other kinds of Christianity and even the category of religion? A Diagram for Fire engages with these questions in a detailed sociocultural ethnographic study of the Vineyard, an American Evangelical movement that originated in Southern California. This movement is known worldwide for its intense musical forms of worship and for advocating the belief that all Christians can perform biblical-style miracles. Setting the miracle as both a strength and a challenge to institutional cohesion and human planning, this book situates the miracle as a fundamentally social means of producing change—surprise and the unexpected used to reimagine and reconfigure the will. Jon Bialecki shows how this configuration of the miraculous shapes typical Pentecostal and Charismatic religious practices as well as music, reading, economic choices, and conservative and progressive political imaginaries.

Taken together, Marian titles are a real-life story of the Catholic faith.

Book Marian Devotion Among the Roma in Slovakia

Download or read book Marian Devotion Among the Roma in Slovakia written by Tatiana Zachar Podolinská and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Tatiana Zachar Podolinská explores how post-modern Marian devotion represents both the continuation and restoration of tradition in the modern world. Podolinská illuminates how Mary as a Great Enchantress has colonised the modern world and survived mandatory atheism in communist countries. The resilience of Marian devotion in the face of the secularising forces of modernity is due to how fluidly it mixes pre-modern and ultra-modern elements of beliefs and practices with the grassroot current of post-modern Christianity. At the same time, Podolinská elucidates how Mary has become the voice of peripheral ethnic groups and nations. This book specifically explains the devotion of the post-modern Mary among the Roma in Slovakia and explores how this community copes with marginalisation, creating islands of marginal centrality. By approaching the ethnicised and enculturated forms of the Virgin Mary (i.e. Chocolate Marys), the book illuminates her potential for helping the Slovak Roma on their own path from the periphery to the center.

Book 1 2 Samuel 1 2 Kings 1 2 Chronicles

Download or read book 1 2 Samuel 1 2 Kings 1 2 Chronicles written by Derek Cooper and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Then David said to the Philistine, 'You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts.'" (1 Samuel 17:45) Reflecting upon David's victory over Goliath, Reformation translator, theologian and commentator William Tyndale compared it to Christ's victory over sin and death: "When David had killed Goliath the giant, glad tidings came to the Israelites that their fearful and cruel enemy was dead and that they were delivered out of all danger. For this gladness, they sang, danced and were joyful. In like manner, the good news or 'gospel' of God is joyful tidings." The books of 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings and 1-2 Chronicles, which record the history of Israel from the prophetic ministry of Samuel to the fall of Jerusalem, provided the reformers with some of the best-known narratives of the Old Testament upon which to comment, including Hannah's prayer, the anointing of Saul as Israel's first king, David's triumph over Goliath and his later adultery with Bathsheba, Solomon's building of the Temple, Elijah's challenge to the prophets of Baal, and the healing of Naaman. For the reformers, these stories were not merely ancient Israelite history, but they also foreshadowed the coming of Jesus Christ, and they had immediate relevance for their lives and the church of their day. Thus, Anglican exegete John Mayer perceived within King Josiah's reform of Israelite worship after the discovery of the Book of the Law a prefiguration of "what should be done in the latter days of the gospel, in which a greater reformation of the religion is now being made." In this Reformation Commentary on Scripture volume, Derek Cooper and Martin Lohrmann guide readers through a diversity of Reformation commentary on these historical books. Here, readers will find reflections from both well-known voices and lesser-known figures from a variety of confessional traditions—Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans and Roman Catholics—many of which appear in English for the first time. By drawing upon a variety of resources—including commentaries, sermons, treatises and confessions—this volume will enable scholars and students to understand better the depth and breadth of Reformation-era insights on Scripture. It will also provide resources for contemporary preachers, and encourage all those who continually seek to share the "joyful tidings" of Jesus Christ.
