Download or read book Life Sciences and Space Research XXIII 3 written by COSPAR. Plenary Meeting and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1989 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers presented at these Topical Meetings addressed research issues concerned with the growth of plants and the recycling of wastes within artificial ecosystems such as Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS), the development of bioreactors for use in space and carbon cycling in natural ecosystems. It is anticipated that a better understanding of the dynamics and mechanisms of the natural ecosystems of the Earth, in which human activities play an increasingly important role, will provide significant information to support the development of artificial ecosystems for life support. In turn, it is expected that in developing ecosystems for the specific purpose of supporting humans in space, a better understanding of natural ecosystems will emerge.

Book excerpt: "In September 1987, the first workshop on Artificial Life was held at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Jointly sponsored by the Center for Nonlinear Studies, the Santa Fe Institute, and Apple Computer Inc, the workshop brought together 160 computer scientists, biologists, physicists, anthropologists, and other assorted ""-ists,"" all of whom shared a common interest in the simulation and synthesis of living systems. During five intense days, we saw a wide variety of models of living systems, including mathematical models for the origin of life, self-reproducing automata, computer programs using the mechanisms of Darwinian evolution to produce co-adapted ecosystems, simulations of flocking birds and schooling fish, the growth and development of artificial plants, and much, much more The workshop itself grew out of my frustration with the fragmented nature of the literature on biological modeling and simulation. For years I had prowled around libraries, shifted through computer-search results, and haunted bookstores, trying to get an overview of a field which I sensed existed but which did not seem to have any coherence or unity. Instead, I literally kept stumbling over interesting work almost by accident, often published in obscure journals if published at all."

Book Machine Learning for Ecology and Sustainable Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Machine Learning for Ecology and Sustainable Natural Resource Management written by Grant Humphries and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecologists and natural resource managers are charged with making complex management decisions in the face of a rapidly changing environment resulting from climate change, energy development, urban sprawl, invasive species and globalization. Advances in Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, digitization, online data availability, historic legacy datasets, remote sensors and the ability to collect data on animal movements via satellite and GPS have given rise to large, highly complex datasets. These datasets could be utilized for making critical management decisions, but are often “messy” and difficult to interpret. Basic artificial intelligence algorithms (i.e., machine learning) are powerful tools that are shaping the world and must be taken advantage of in the life sciences. In ecology, machine learning algorithms are critical to helping resource managers synthesize information to better understand complex ecological systems. Machine Learning has a wide variety of powerful applications, with three general uses that are of particular interest to ecologists: (1) data exploration to gain system knowledge and generate new hypotheses, (2) predicting ecological patterns in space and time, and (3) pattern recognition for ecological sampling. Machine learning can be used to make predictive assessments even when relationships between variables are poorly understood. When traditional techniques fail to capture the relationship between variables, effective use of machine learning can unearth and capture previously unattainable insights into an ecosystem's complexity. Currently, many ecologists do not utilize machine learning as a part of the scientific process. This volume highlights how machine learning techniques can complement the traditional methodologies currently applied in this field.

Book Life Sciences and Space Research XXIV 4

Download or read book Life Sciences and Space Research XXIV 4 written by Robert David MacElroy and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1992-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on Earth has evolved within the protective blanket of our atmosphere closely coupled with its environment. With space technology, the range of human action has extended into regions which are vast and hostile to any life form. To live in this environment of space, man or any other biological system requires a protective shelter equipped with an efficient life support system. The thirty papers contained in this volume present the advancements made in establishing regenerative life support systems. In the meeting on Recycling and Control in Regenerative Life Support, the issues associated with biological and physical responses to the space environment were addressed as well as approaches to the control and stablilization of hybrid systems. Higher Plant Growth focussed on production of food, water and oxygen from potentially useful crop species grown under controlled environment conditions. The need for establishing artificial biosystems and the problems that will arise were discussed during Impact of Human Expeditions to Mars. It is anticipated that there will be a better understanding of the dynamic processes regulating our own terrestrial ecosystem.
