Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on the Mississippi, Part 9. by Mark Twain THE approaches to New Orleans were familiar; general aspects were unchanged. When one goes flying through London along a railway propped in the air on tall arches, he may inspect miles of upper bedrooms through the open windows, but the lower half of the houses is under his level and out of sight. Similarly, in high-river stage, in the New Orleans region, the water is up to the top of the enclosing levee-rim, the flat country behind it lies low-representing the bottom of a dish-and as the boat swims along, high on the flood, one looks down upon the houses and into the upper windows. There is nothing but that frail breastwork of earth between the people and destruction. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book Mississippi Life Tables 1950 51

Download or read book Mississippi Life Tables 1950 51 written by Morton Brandon King Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mississippi Life Tables, 1950-51: By Sex, Race, and Residence Consider Table 1, for example. White urban males born in Mississippi in 1950 could expect to live on the average to be years Old. Such estimates are known as expectation Of life at birth, and are those usually published in newspapers and similar sources. Obviously, some Of these babies died in the first days and months Of life. Others will normally live to be 100. Thus, life expectancy at birth, or at any age, tells us little about Single individuals. However, it is accurate enough for groups of Similar individuals to provide a secure basis for the life insurance business. Because Of the high mortality Of infants under one year Of age, life expectation is longest between the ages Of one and four. From Table 1 we see that urban white males aged one in 1950 had a (further) life expectancy Of years. White urban men who were 80 in 1950 might expect to live more years; and those aged 80, more years. Many persons are interested in the total length Of life which may be expected. Such an estimate may be approximated by applying the life expectancies to all ages in a class interval, and not just to the youngest age. For example, a white urban male aged 32 in 1950 might expect a total length Of life of 70 years and about 6 months. This is Obtained by adding 38 years and 6 months, the life expectation at age 30, to 32 years. Similarly, one aged 63 in 1950 might expect a total length Of life Of 77 years and 6 months; and one aged 81, 86 years and about 3 months. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on the Mississippi, Part 2. by Mark Twain WHAT with lying on the rocks four days at Louisville, and some other delays, the poor old 'Paul Jones' fooled away about two weeks in making the voyage from Cincinnati to New Orleans. This gave me a chance to get acquainted with one of the pilots, and he taught me how to steer the boat, and thus made the fascination of river life more potent than ever for me. It also gave me a chance to get acquainted with a youth who had taken deck passage-more's the pity; for he easily borrowed six dollars of me on a promise to return to the boat and pay it back to me the day after we should arrive. But he probably died or forgot, for he never came. It was doubtless the former, since he had said his parents were wealthy, and he only traveled deck passage because it was cooler.{footnote [1. 'Deck' Passage, i.e. steerage passage.]} We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book Five Years in South Mississippi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Five Years in South Mississippi Classic Reprint written by T. S. Powell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Years in South Mississippi Some five years ago, while yet engaged in plans and labors for the religious development of a section of country in South Mississippi, I conceived the purpose of writing an account of those labors. The motive which prompted me was not, I trust, so much a sense of self-importance as of the importance of the work in that section. There was presented the prospect of a large territory of Christianized country, prevailingly Baptistic, yet comparatively undeveloped in benevolence, and resting in a rather low state of religious activity. The progress which I felt bound to urge was in the line of more frequent public services and increased activity in all the departments of church work. To develop the latent energies of the churches which I served, to marshal their forces for more general efforts, and inspire them with greater zeal for the blessings of religion upon themselves, and strengthen their aspirations to extend the saving influence to more destitute communities, was the wish which lay nearest my heart; to this end my efforts were chiefly directed. Nor was I alone in the pursuance of this special object. It was evident that other brethren and pastors were diligently working in the same line.
