Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of the Notorious Desperado Cullen Baker, From His Childhood to His Death: With a Full Account of All the Murders He Committed The country was now rid of two powerful tyrants, who had kept the citizens in terror for years, and they having no special successors, their forces were scattered to the four winds of the earth, and the country was permitted to breathe free and live in peace once more, rejoicing at the happy thought that the weapons of a relentless foe had fallen to. Molder in the dust. Cullen was yet too young to take part with any public affair, but was noted for his shrewd, quick-witted and notica ble character, which far surpassed that of other boys who were growing up to manhood with him. He possessed a natural relish for frontier life, and usually devoted his leisure hours in the forest with no other companion than his favorite ri e, pursuing various species of wild game which was found in almost any portion of the Red river country. Cullen's father, after remaining at Spanish Bluffs a few years, removed some forty 'miles, in a Southern direction. And settled on the South bank of the Sulphur Fork of Red river, a few miles west of the Arkansas line, in a County then known as Cass, now known as Davis. Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes Bundy's own quotes about his life and crimes *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "I'm the most cold-hearted son of a bitch you'll ever meet." - Ted Bundy "I don't think anybody doubts whether I've done some bad things. The question is: what, of course, and how and, maybe even most importantly, why?" - Ted Bundy For most people, Ted Bundy is the quintessential serial killer - a good-looking, highly intelligent man who used his charm to lure an untold number of women to their deaths. In fact, as the judge announced his death sentence, he noted Bundy's intellect and mused that he would have enjoyed hearing Bundy try a case before him had he remained simply the genius law student he had once been. Bundy, of course, ended up choosing a far different path, going on a historic crime spree during the 1970s so prolific that estimates of his kill count vary by dozens, a debate Bundy was only too happy to stoke. On one occasion, when the FBI estimated he was responsible for 3 dozen murders, Bundy replied, "Add one digit to that, and you'll have it." On another occasion, he claimed the estimate of 3 dozen was close to accurate. Whatever the actual number, what is known is that the murders ranged from coldly calculated approaches of women in public places to breaking into homes at night and bludgeoning victims to death. Bundy often kept mementoes to commemorate the crimes, ranging from victims' possessions to their severed heads. As is natural in cases like this, attempts to understand Bundy's pathology have been ongoing for decades, with separate diagnoses of narcissistic personality disorder and bipolar disorder, and one prison official described Bundy's changing personalities: "He became weird on me...Almost a complete change of personality ... that was the day I was afraid of him." Unfortunately, Bundy proved resourceful in other ways aside from committing murder. After he was initially caught in Utah in 1975 and being tried for attempted assault, murder charges were brought against him in Colorado, but Bundy escaped prison twice in succession, allowing him to commit an untold number of additional crimes until he was caught again in Florida in 1978. Shortly before his death, in an interview with the popular Christian psychologist Dr. James Dobson, Bundy blamed his problems on pornography and claimed to have found God and repented, yet he had noted in a letter in 1977 that he almost never looked at porn magazines, telling future biographer Ann Rule, "Who in the world reads these publications? ... I have never purchased such a magazine, and [on only] two or three occasions have I ever picked one up." . Regardless of his motives, after nearly a decade of denials, Bundy confessed to having killed at least 30 women across 7 states in just a 5 year period the decade before. In her work on the serial killer, Ann Rule labeled him "a sadistic sociopath who took pleasure from another human's pain and the control he had over his victims, to the point of death, and even after." Even a member of his own defense team, Polly Nelson, called him "the very definition of heartless evil." Ted Bundy: The Life and Crimes of One of America's Most Notorious Serial Killers looks at the life of the serial killer and the crimes he committed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ann Rule says, "Kathryn Casey is one of the best true crime writers today"—high praise indeed from the author of a host of nonfiction New York Times bestsellers including Green River and The Stranger Beside Me, the story of serial killer Ted Bundy. With Deadly Little Secrets, Casey once again explores the dark side of the Lone Star State, offering a riveting true story of a murderous Texas preacher responsible for the cold-blooded slaying of the mother of his children. Meticulously researched and spellbindingly told, Deadly Little Secrets pulls back the curtain on the horrific crimes of a supposed man of God who was more devoted to the Devil, and it demonstrates why such true crime luminaries as Edgar® Award winner Carleton Stowers and Gregg Olsen are confirmed Kathryn Casey fans. And don't miss Kathryn Casey's latest book, Deliver Us, a riveting account of the brutal murders of young women in the I-45/Texas Killing Fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1896, an argument over a butter churn resulted in the death of Katrina "Katy" Baumli, a thirty-five-year-old wife and mother of three young children. In 1910, poker losses resulted in the murders of Oda Hubbell, his wife Clara, and their two small children, as well as the burning of the family home. What did these two crimes, fourteen years apart, have in common? They shared a common acquaintance with Hezekiah Rasco, a handsome, intelligent, charismatic man from Nodaway County, Missouri. Hezekiah "Hez" Rasco committed his first murder in 1896, at the age of fifteen. The sheer brutality of Katy Baumli's death shocked the people of Arkoe, the quiet farming community near where they lived. The community was stunned again a week later when Hez Rasco confessed to the crime. Ultimately, it would take three trials to get at the truth and secure justice for Katy and her family, and to restore the peace of the community. In late 1897, Hez Rasco began his first prison sentence in "The Walls," the Missouri State Penitentiary at Jefferson City. There he lived the life of a model prisoner and learned a trade. Hez gained his freedom in 1905, but it was short-lived. He returned to The Walls in October of that same year to serve a two-year sentence for grand larceny, after being found in possession of a stolen horse in Buchanan County, Missouri. Upon release in 1907, Hez Rasco made his way back to Nodaway County to resume his former life as a farmer, helping out on his father Henry's farm near Guilford, Missouri. On November 19, 1910, after a long day's work, Hez cleaned himself up and went to Guilford in search of some entertainment. There he met up with two acquaintances, Oda Hubbell and Charles Wallace. The men went to an empty boxcar parked on an unused side track at the Guilford depot and began to play poker. Eventually Hez and Oda were left to play until dawn. Hez's losses to Oda during the course of the game resulted in an argument the next morning. Oda refused to acquiesce to Hez's demand to continue playing. Instead, Oda went home that Sunday morning to be with his family. Hez went looking for a gun. By seven o'clock that Sunday evening, the Hubbell family was dead. By ten o'clock, their home was ablaze. Within twelve hours, Hez Rasco, age 30, was under arrest for their murders. But, was he guilty of murder and arson or was he a convenient suspect for predisposed minds? Only the evidence and a jury of twelve men could answer that question. Hezekiah Rasco: Child of Woe - Man of Sorrow recounts the story of Hez's life, as evidenced through available records.
