Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Emmet IN the first volume of the London and Dublin Magazme appeared a series of papers under the title of Robert Emmet and his Contemporaries. It was then, as usual, a time of trouble in' Ireland, more aggravated than ordinary amongst the discontented and while the system of government was reprehensible, the popular notion of removing it offended largely at once against policy and prudence. Agitation had become of a normal character and as adverse parties indulged in their own preconceived views, even good men hesitated to. Believe in the efficiency of any immediate remedy. Under these circumstances one man indulged the hope that it was possible, by representing to all what adverse parties thought and said, to influence public opinion in favour of common sense and patriotic honesty. He believed that if precept Was strengthenedby example the end contemplated would be, to some extent, obtained. Under these impressions the pub lis her of the magazine admitted the papers embodying the story, the thoughts, and the conversations of Robert Emmet. The commercial spirit was not, of course, abandoned in the project, and perhaps a small sensation was anticipated. The expectation was, to a great extent, fulfilled, for the periodical was successfiil'; and the Emmet Papers no sooner appeared, than they were published by the small printers in every possible form, and circulated most extensively and when the last paper appeared the whole were very promptly published in a small volume. The work was repub lished in America, in various forms and sizes 5 and a Manchester publisher, a late and much esteemed magistrate of that city, embodied its contents in a memoir of Robert Emmet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Emmet: His Birth-Place and Burial Sometime since after reading for a second time Dr. R. R. Madden's Memoir of Robert Emmet, I resolved to place before Irishmen at home and abroad some entirely new facts and circumstances relating to the birth-place and burial of Emmet. My researches were made with a twofold object first, to ascertain beyond all doubt or question where Robert Emmet was born, and, if possible, to exactly locate the house; and next, to throw further light upon the much-disputed question as to the actual place of his interment. Most of the particulars I now make known have not, I think, previously transpired. The task was undertaken in the hope of adding something to the store of National know ledge concerning the soul-stirring personality of Emmet, whose memory shall never die as long as Irishmen continue to think out the problem of accomplishing their country's freedom, following as the lode-star of her destiny the only true ideal by which he of whom I write was inspired to make the effort to break her chains. Mr. Lewes, who, though a minister of the Established Church, was yet an enemy to its monopolizing power and persecuting spirit towards his Catholic fellow-subjects. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Emmet a Survey of His Rebellion, and of His Romance, 1904 The following unscientific monograph, a sort of little historical descant, is founded upon all the accurate known literature of the subject, and also largely on the Hardwicke MSS. These, in so far as they relate to Emmet, the writer was first to consult and have copied, last winter, before they were catalogued. But while these sheets were in press, several interesting fragments from the MSS. appeared in the Cornhill Magazine for September, 1903, thus forestalling their present use. This discovery will condone the writer's innocent claim, made on page 60, of printing the two letters there as unpublished matter. The portrait is after Brocas's hurried courtroom sketch, made the day before the execution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1847 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX. The manifesto of the provisional government, drawn up by Robert Emmet, and found at the Depot in Marshalsea-lane, was produced on the trial of Edward Kearney. Lieutenant Coltman, of the 9th regiment, proved that several bundles of this document were found in the Depot "quite wet from the press." Extracts from the documents have been published, and the entire manifesto that was produced on Kearney's trial is given in Ridgeway's Report, but, knowing the unscrupulous conduct of the government agents of that day with respect to such documents, I thought it desirable to give an exact copy of the original paper, the authenticity of which might be depended on. I am indebted to Miss M'Cracken for the copy of that document, and of the proclamation annexed to it, which were found among Russell's papers. "THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT TO THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND. "You are now called upon to shew the world that you are competent to take your place among nations; that you have a right to claim their recognizance of you, as an independent country: by the only satisfactory proof you can furnish of your capability of maintaining your independence, your wresting it from England with your own hands. "In the development of this system, which has been organized within the last eight months; at the close of internal defeat, and without the hope of foreign assistance, which has been conducted with a tranquillity mistaken for obedience, which neither the failure of a similar attempt in England has retarded, nor the renewal of hostilities has accelerated; in the development of this system you will shew to the people of England, that there is a spirit of perseverance in this country beyond their power to calculate or repress; you will shew to them that as...
