Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE OF THE AUTHOR. It is an old custom in the Church that, when any great crime has been committed which specially outrages the Divine Majesty, the faithful should be summoned before an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and solemn prayers addressed to the Eucharistic Mediator in reparation of the sacrilege. This thought brought about, three hundred years ago, the institution of the 'Forty Hours'' Adoration. The three days which precede Lent are, for the world in general, the occasion of sin: for the children of God they should be consequently days of expiation, and the Holy Eucharist is proposed to them as the Divine method whereby alone their expiation can be made effective for the salvation of souls. Later on, the same inspiration gave to the faithful a variety of devotions in honour of the Blessed Sacrament, each and all to be performed in a spirit of reparation and penance. Finally, at a later era, the idea of reparation, always closely united with the worship of the Eucharist, gave rise to the beautiful and touching devotion of Perpetual Adoration. It was in 1848, between the two crises of February and June, that Paris, the main cause and the theatre of our misfortunes, gave birth to this spontaneous fruit of faith. Christian souls, in this hour of anguish, felt that the measure of God's justice was full. Many conceived the idea of opposing perpetual reparation to perpetual outrages; and to prolong, night and day, at the feet of the tabernacle, where the Blessed Sacrament would be exposed, holy watches of adoration and prayer. This pious wish could not fail to find an echo in the heart of Paris's chief pastor, Mgr. Sibour, who had witnessed at Rome the marvellous fruits of this devotion, which is an old one in the Eternal City, and had been the first to introduce it in France in his diocese of Digne. It was then, with a holy eagerness, that, having become Archbishop of Paris, he welcomed the spontaneous impulse of his flock, and transformed it into an association which enabled all the sanctuaries in the capital to share the honour of opening their gates in turn to these religious exercises. From Paris this association spread rapidly through the greater part of the dioceses of France; and the year which gave it birth marks certainly an important era in the history of the renewal of Catholic piety throughout the country....

Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle will never forget the first time she laid eyes on Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Hunched, frail, shorter than one of Donna's own children, the aging servant of the poorest of the poor cut an unassuming figure awaiting the start of Mass with Her Missionary of Charity sisters. They would speak briefly after the liturgy and then spend the next ten years intermittently sharing hopes, dreams, and prayers through the mail and in face-to-face conversations. With Mother Teresa and Me, Donna-Marie invites you to step inside her deeply personal experiences with one of the greatest souls of modern times. Take her up on the offer and don't be surprised if you, too, find your heart blessed and your soul inspired by the diminutive nun who left an enormous impression on Donna-Marie -- and on the whole world.

Book Mother Teresa Come Be My Light

Download or read book Mother Teresa Come Be My Light written by Mother Teresa and published by Image. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic work reveals the inner spiritual life of one of the most beloved and important religious figures in history--Mother Teresa. During her lifelong service to the poorest of the poor, Mother Teresa became an icon of compassion to people of all religions; her extraordinary contributions to the care of the sick, the dying, and thousands of others nobody else was prepared to look after has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. Little is known, however, about her own spiritual heights or her struggles. This collection of her writing and reflections, almost all of which have never been made public before, sheds light on Mother Teresa's interior life in a way that reveals the depth and intensity of her holiness for the first time. Compiled and presented by Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., who knew Mother Teresa for twenty years and is the postulator for her cause for sainthood and director of the Mother Teresa Center, Mother Teresa brings together letters she wrote to her spiritual advisors over decades. A moving chronicle of her spiritual journey—including moments, indeed years, of utter desolation—these letters reveal the secrets she shared only with her closest confidants. She emerges as a classic mystic whose inner life burned with the fire of charity and whose heart was tested and purified by an intense trial of faith, a true dark night of the soul. "If I ever become a Saint-- I will surely be one of "darkness." I will continually be absent from Heaven-- to light the light of those in darkness on earth." --Mother Teresa

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new biography of the iconic Austrian empress that challenges the many myths about her life and rule Maria Theresa (1717–1780) was once the most powerful woman in Europe. At the age of twenty-three, she ascended to the throne of the Habsburg Empire, a far-flung realm composed of diverse ethnicities and languages, beset on all sides by enemies and rivals. Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger provides the definitive biography of Maria Theresa, situating this exceptional empress within her time while dispelling the myths surrounding her. Drawing on a wealth of archival evidence, Stollberg-Rilinger examines all facets of eighteenth-century society, from piety and patronage to sexuality and childcare, ceremonial life at court, diplomacy, and the everyday indignities of warfare. She challenges the idealized image of Maria Theresa as an enlightened reformer and mother of her lands who embodied both feminine beauty and virile bellicosity, showing how she despised the ideas of the Enlightenment, treated her children with relentless austerity, and mercilessly persecuted Protestants and Jews. Work, consistent physical and mental discipline, and fear of God were the principles Maria Theresa lived by, and she demanded the same from her family, her court, and her subjects. A panoramic work of scholarship that brings Europe's age of empire spectacularly to life, Maria Theresa paints an unforgettable portrait of the uncompromising yet singularly charismatic woman who left her enduring mark on the era in which she lived and reigned.

Book Mother Teresa

Download or read book Mother Teresa written by Mother Teresa and published by St. Francis of Assisi Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience the same Spirit-filled words that Mother Theresa shared with the poor, the dying, the hurting, and the skeptical. The quotes, stories, and prayers in this book are hers. Mother Teresa's work for -- and among -- the poor has become the yardstick by which millions measure compassion and generosity across religious and political divides. While Mother Theresa herself always stressed action over words, it is the latter that have provided solace and hope to those who never had the opportunity to meet her during her life. Though the world has lost one of its most admired women, Mother Theresa's words and her memory still serve to move men and women from every race and religious background to volunteer to help the poor. -- From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Published to coincide with Pope Francis's Year of Mercy and the Vatican's canonization of Mother Teresa, this new book of unpublished material by a humble yet remarkable woman of faith whose influence is felt as deeply today as it was when she was alive, offers Mother Teresa’s profound yet accessible wisdom on how we can show mercy and compassion in our day-to-day lives. For millions of people from all walks of life, Mother Teresa's canonization is providentially taking place during Pope Francis's Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. This is entirely fitting since she is seen both inside and outside of the Church as an icon of God's mercy to those in need. Compiled and edited by Brian Kolodiejckuk, M.C., the postulator of Mother Teresa’s cause for sainthood, A Call to Mercy presents deep yet accessible wisdom on how we can show compassion in our everyday lives. In her own words, Mother Teresa discusses such topics as: the need for us to visit the sick and the imprisoned the importance of honoring the dead and informing the ignorant the necessity to bear our burdens patiently and forgive willingly the purpose to feed the poor and pray for all the greatness of creating a “civilization of love” through personal service to others Featuring never before published testimonials by people close to Mother Teresa as well as prayers and suggestions for putting these ideas into practice, A Call to Mercy is not only a lovely keepsake, but a living testament to the teachings of a saint whose ideas are important, relevant and very necessary in the 21st century.
