This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Ferdinand Magellan and the First Circumnavigation of the Globe: 1480-1521 IT is a curious circumstance that, while the world is year by year presented with biographies of persons who cannot lay claim to a tithe of the renown so justly accorded to Magellan, no life of the great circumnavi gator has yet been written in English, or indeed - if we make one exception - ih any other language. The exception is Snr. Diego de Barros Arana's Vida y Wages de Hernando do Magallanes, which in 1881 was translated into Portuguese by Snr. F. De Magalhaes villas-boas, with the addition of an original appendix. This work, although accurate, does not aim at detail, and Magellan's early life in India under Almeida and Albuquerque is dismissed in five pages. Students de sirons of a further knowledge are forced to gather it as best they can from the pages of N avarrete, or to tread the thorny paths of the old chronicles and the docu ments of the Torre do Tombo and Simancas. Book Ferdinand Magellan

Download or read book Ferdinand Magellan written by Candy Gourlay and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated biography of the famous explorer with “plenty of engaging action scenes and historical facts” (School Library Journal). Before he led the first expedition to circumnavigate the Earth, Ferdinand Magellan (1480–1521) was a Portuguese noble who loved the sea. A skilled sailor, he led a number of voyages and is known for his incredible navigation skills. Over the course of his sailing career, he faced terrible storms and mutinies but always managed to get his crew home safely. He set off with his crew to circle the globe—a trip that no other ship had ever completed. Though Magellan died in combat in the Philippines before he could complete the voyage, his ship went on to complete the first circumnavigation of the world, and he is still known as one of the greatest explorers. However, as historians today note, many of the places that Magellan “discovered” already had people living there, and his fame is one rooted in colonialism. Ferdinand Magellan tackles the legacy—both good and bad—of this famous explorer. First Names is a highly illustrated nonfiction series that puts young readers on a first-name basis with some of the most incredible people in history and of today!
