Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Elizabeth Fry But various considerations have additionally stimulated the Compiler to add another to the several sketches of the Life of Eliz abeth Fry. A prominent one is suggested by the fact, that her character and sentiments have been represented by individuals, widely differing in religious opinion, both from her and from each other; and they have (in consequence of the varying mental com plexion to which habit and circumstances impart a colouring pecu liarto each) given, to their picture of Elizabeth Fry, a tinge which has prevented her from appearing, as she was, consistent in her language, her conduct, and demeanour, with the principles which, from conviction, she was early led to adopt, and to which, through life, she steadfastly adhered. This, it must he confessed, is calcu lated to induce the impression that, in Elizabeth Fry's life, there was evinced a compromise of principle; and it proves that whilst her ardent admirers exhibit a dazzling portrait of her piety, her loveliness, and her philanthropy, they fail, in degree at least, to depict her in the light of truth - in her meek and lowly garb of deep humility, treading with watchful circumspection and fear, the cross-bearing path of the blessed Redeemer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabeth Fry Doubtless Mrs. Fry considered that she was called to perform a peculiar work. The days of Woman's Mission had not dawned then, and the vagaries, mild or otherwise, of later times had never been heard iof. Any woman who moved very perceptibly out of the ordinary ways of life laid herself open to miscon struction, accusation 'of Phariseeism, and to more or less contempt; but the bent of Elizabeth Fry's mind lay in the direction of prison-reform, and from the day that she first visited a Bridewell down to that when she last, in trembling tones, exhorted her fellow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabeth Fry: The Angel of the Prisons I know no pleasanter reading than the lives or memoirs of good people; fortunately, literature is full of them. When we learn of the marvelous work of So-and-so, we naturally wonder (if we are of an inquiring turn of mind) what manner of man he was; how he lived, looked, spoke; how and why he was able to work his wonders. Then we go to the nearest library, and commune with the card catalogue, or - if we are of the mousing kind - mouse about among the shelves dedicated to biography. We are pretty sure to find a life or a memoir, or at least a memorial sketch; now and then we have the luck to light on an autobiography. Book Elizabeth Fry

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elizabeth Fry: Life and Labors of the Eminent Philantropist, Preacher, and Prison Reformer; Compiled From Her Journal and Other Sources My aim has been not to preserve everything she said and did, but to present a Life Portrait of Elizabeth Fry and her unique career. This can best be done by letting herself be the chief speaker, since she has spoken so admirably z - next those who knew her well. Of the latter we have many wit nesses, but the principal are her two daughters, Katherine Fry and Rachel E. Cresswell. Both still living at this date, who in 1847, two years after her death, published a Mem oir of the Life of Elizabeth Fry, in two octavo volumes of 525 and 552 pages. This was extensively read at that time, when the name of Elizabeth Fry was in all mouths; but it necessarily contained much of transitory interest to the rapidly changing world of men, who are too busy to dwell long on what does not closely concern them. The work was not reprinted and has long been out of the market, and only to be found among those who purchased at the time of its publication. An abridgement of it was afterwards published, with some additional notes and recollections by Susanna Corder, a teacher of Friends' schools, who was well acquainted with Mrs. Fry, and a member of the same religious Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Memoir of Elizabeth Fry On the page of divine inspiration is inscribed the sacred decree, "The righteous Shall be in everlasting remembrance." This has, doubtless, a special reference to that witness which is in heaven - that record upon high - by which the actions of the just are registered in the "Book of Life: " yet it also indicates that the bright course of those faithful servants of God and benefactors of mankind, who "rest from their labours," and whose "works do follow them," is designed to serve as an ensign throughout succeeding generations; exhibiting, by the force of a holy example, the blessedness and the duty of treading in that pathway of Christian dedication, in which they sought to follow Him who "went about doing good," and who "came to seek and to save that which was lost."
