The twelve selected were then set in order by their birth dates from the oldest to the youngest. The first three were Thomas B. Marsh, David W. Patten and Brigham Young. Brother Patten was killed in the Battle of Crooked Creek before Thomas Marsh was excommunicated which passed the leadership of the twelve to Brigham Young. This work is as originally published in 1900 to include grammar and spelling that is consistent with language of that day.

Patten was the Captain of the Cavalry of the Mormon Militia at Far West. He led his men in assisting families driven from their homes during the Missouri persecutions, earning the nickname of Captain Fearnot among his people. on October 25, 1838, he commanded the Mormon Militia against anti-Mormon forces at the Battle of Crooked River. Patten was mortally wounded during the battle, but his legacy of faith in Jesus Christ lives on.
