Book The Earliest Sources for the Life of Jesus

This book was released on 2005-05-10 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author's Preliminary Considerations: I have begun this discussion of the earliest historical sources for the life of Jesus with the 'Apostles' Creed' and the Fourth Gospel rather than with the documents that modern criticism regards as giving us materials for history, because I venture to think that the first thing needed to enable the modern investigator to judge the surviving documents aright is the attempt to look at them rather from the point of view of the early Christians than from that of our own aims and desires.

Book The British Jesus 1850 1970

Download or read book The British Jesus 1850 1970 written by Meredith Veldman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Jesus focuses on the Jesus of the religious culture dominant in Britain from the 1850s through the 1950s, the popular Christian culture shared by not only church, kirk, and chapel goers, but also the growing numbers of Britons who rarely or only episodically entered a house of worship. An essay in intellectual as well as cultural history, this book illumines the interplay between and among British New Testament scholarship, institutional Christianity, and the wider Protestant culture. The scholars who mapped and led the uniquely British quest for the historical Jesus in the first half of the twentieth century were active participants in efforts to replace the popular image of “Jesus in a white nightie” with a stronger figure, and so, they hoped, to preserve Britain’s Christian identity. They failed. By exploring that failure, and more broadly, by examining the relations and exchanges between popular, artistic, and scholarly portrayals of Jesus, this book highlights the continuity and the conservatism of Britain’s popular Christianity through a century of religious and cultural transformation. Exploring depictions of Jesus from over more than one hundred years, this book is a crucial resource for scholars of British Christianity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Download or read book God in Experience written by Hugh Ross Mackintosh and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of God in experience is, according to Hugh Ross Mackintosh, a question of whether and how God self-manifests to some humans in their experience, perhaps in conscience. Does God self-authenticate or self-evidence God's reality to some humans, in their experience? This book contains sixteen of Mackintosh's essays and two of his sermons that address this question. Mackintosh describes God as an intentional agent with goal-directed causal powers--not just an idea, a principle, or a law. He thus holds that God is an active personal agent capable of interpersonal communion with humans. Mackintosh pays careful attention to the experience of being forgiven and redeemed by God. God in experience, then, is God in moral experience. Mackintosh invites his readers to consider whether their experience includes an experienced moral challenge, an encounter with a God who seeks our redemption.

Book Nonconformist Theology in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Nonconformist Theology in the Twentieth Century written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive study of the systematic, doctrinal, and constructive theology produced within the major Nonconformist traditions during the twentieth century. By the end of the nineteenth century, modern biblical critical methods were fairly widely adopted, evolutionary thought was in the air, and doctrinal modifications, especially concerning the fatherhood of God, were underway. Sell charts the influence on Nonconformist thinking in the twentieth century of the New Theology associated with R. J. Campbell, the First World War, the reception of Karl Barth, the theological excitement of the 1960s, and growing religious pluralism. The second lecture concerns the major Christian doctrines of God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Trinity. Whereas in the early decades of the century there was considerable emphasis upon the atonement, during the concluding two decades the Trinity received more attention than had formerly been the case. In Lecture Three attention is directed to ecclesiological and ecumenical themes. The Nonconformists are presented as Protestant, and as displaying some zeal in propagating their particular understanding of the Church. The doctrinal aspects of their national and international moves toward inner-family unity and of their broader ecumenical relationships are considered. Eschatology is treated in the concluding lecture prior to Sell's assessment of the significance of twentieth-century Nonconformist theology, and his observations regarding its current state, its future content, and its practitioners.
