Book The Life of Nelson Vol II Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The Life of Nelson Vol II Illustrated Edition written by Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-20 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Admiral Mahan, passed away in 1914, his ideas and thoughts lived on in his writings, which spanned the naval strategy of his own times and the lessons learnt from history. They are still read at the modern naval academies and the ideas permeate the teachings at Annapolis. A flag officer in the U.S. Navy who fought during the American civil war for the Union forces, his works have gained a fame that makes him the foremost of the naval historians of the late 1800’s. Of enduring interest is his two volume history of Horatio Nelson, the hero of the Royal Navy and the battle of Trafalgar. An epic and tragic figure in age that abounds with them, the victor of Trafalgar who never lived past that day to see his fame endure is a favourite for biographies, however few are as balanced and detailed as Mahan’s. The second volume of the biography focuses on the years 1800 to 1805, which were an exceptionally trying and busy time for all Royal Navy officers, but also pivotal to Nelson’s development and led to his masterful action at Trafalgar. Nelson’s role in the pre-emptive strike at the Danish fleet at Copenhagen, and his anger nearly boils over with superiors who he considers not forward-thinking or aggressive enough in what was a conservative arm of the forces. Nelson’s life at home is not ignored or passed over and his life with Lady Hamilton and their daughter Horatia are covered although in less details than modern biographies. Finally the epic, tragic and brilliant battle of Trafalgar which ended the French hopes of global dominance by sea but also Nelson’s life. Illustrations – Vice Admiral Nelson, Vice Admiral Nelson, Vice Admiral Hyde-Parker, H.M ships Agamemnon, Captain, Vanguard, Elephant and Victory, Admiral Collingwood, Meeting of Nelson and Wellington, Vice Admiral Lord Nelson, Captain Thomas Masterman Hardy, Horatia (22 year old). Book The Pursuit of Victory

Download or read book The Pursuit of Victory written by Roger Knight and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-06-29 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point of Roger Knight's magnificent new biography is to explain how Nelson achieved such extraordinary success. Knight places him firmly in the context of the Royal Navy at the time. He analyses Nelson's more obvious qualities, his leadership strengths and his coolness and certainty in battle, and also explores his strategic grasp, the condition of his ships, the skill of his seamen and his relationships with the officers around him - including those who could hardly be called friendly. This biography takes a cool look at Nelson's status as a hero and demolishes many of the myths that were so carefully established by the early authors, and repeated by their modern successors. Nelson was a shrewd political operator who charmed and impressed political leaders and whose advancement was helped by the relatively weak generation of admirals above him. He was a difficult subordinate, only happy when completely in command, and capable of great ruthlessness. He was flawed, but brilliant - and not to be crossed.

Upon which he exclaimed, 'do, brother a William, write to my father at Bath, and tell him I should like to go with uncle Man rice to sea.' William, who had been the constant companion of Horatio, and was little more than seventeen months older than his brother, 'wrote accordingly. Various disappointments with the difficulties'of a narrbw income, -had chilled in the mind of mr.'nelson all idea of patronage from his connections! The daring-resolution, however, of his boy Horatio gradually warmed the less san guine mind of the father, and infirm health ren dering him anxious not to lose an opportunity, which seemed to offer so desirable a provision for one of his sons, be resolved to.write to Captain Suckling. From the answer which Mr: Nelson received, the following passage is remembered: 6 What has poor Horace done, who'is so weak. Book excerpt: 'Fascinating . . . Shot through with fresh insights . . . No previous biography has attempted anything so comprehensive.' ObserverNelson is a thrilling new appraisal of Horatio Nelson, the greatest practitioner of naval command the world has ever seen. It explores the professional, personal, intellectual and practical origins of one man's genius, to understand how the greatest warrior that Britain has ever produced transformed the art of conflict, and enabled his country to survive the challenge of total war and international isolation. In Nelson, Andrew Lambert - described by David Cannadine as 'the outstanding British naval historian of his generation' - is able to offer new insights into the individual quality which led Byron rightly to celebrate Nelson's genius as 'Britannia's God of War'. He demonstrates how Admiral Nelson elevated the business of naval warfare to the level of the sublime. Nelson's unique gift was to take that which other commanders found complex, and reduce it to simplicity. Where his predecessors and opponents saw a particular battle as an end in itself, Nelson was always a step ahead - even in the midst of terrifying, close-quarters action, with officers and men struck down all around him. 'Excellent . . . Worthy of the stirring events [it celebrates].' Independent
