Book excerpt: New York City Judge, Julia Husson, narrates a mysterious and tragic tale about two young women: A princess and a shoemaker. When scientific evidence disputes her dying father's paternity, the princess is cast into the cold. Betrayed by a stepsibling, she then finds herself locked in an asylum. But ultimately, it is the princess' blood that infects her, as though a curse has been set upon her father's house. Eventually, she escapes the imprisonment, but not the madness. Where is she now? Only Julia knows. All the while, Julia's niece, the shoemaker, spends her days and nights toiling for a famous, and manipulative, shoe designer whose identity is hidden behind the guise of an outlandish, chenille dot birdcage veil. Although the obedient shoemaker is religiously devoted to the quest for the perfect shoe, she finds herself torn between two charming suitors: the first, a Method actor; the other, a gentleman of mystery. But when her pursuit of the elusive happily-ever-after reveals a cruel proposition, the outcome is deadly.

Book Life s Pitfalls

Download or read book Life s Pitfalls written by Teddy Andrew Mulenga, M.d. and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life's pitfalls are a glance backwards into reality. It's a reality check, so to say. This is a closer look at how life ought to be lived. But it's not a book of regrets. It's a book of lessons learnt by falling into ditches and getting out. When writing this book, I don't for one moment claim to have all the answers to life. Many of the pitfalls you will read here will to some appear pure common sense, but I also know that even common sense is a product of experience, and may not be so common after al Sometimes one needs to fall into a ditch for one to realize how deep it is. You will be lucky if one can point out the ditch before you fall into it head first! If by going through this book a life will be changed, even if its one, then it would have achieved its aim. We all learn from mistakes, what is bad is to repeat them or to ignore the warnings. Warning signs on the high way are not for decorations; they may save a life! In life we ought to learn from one another. Every body has something he can teach the other, regardless of age, gender, and profession. It's only a fool that looks down on others. The only thing that differentiates us is that, others are prepared to document things, while the earth continues to spin on its axis. Do not be afraid to share your experiences. The biggest critics I know are those who sit on the side lines, afraid to take the plunge. I am not a life coach, for I have always hated labels, especially if they are not earned. I believe the mind of a person must be able to explore without regard to artificial labels. A life coach is one who claims to know it all, who has answers to every situation in life. I don't, and don't think any one has, either. But some things I know and some things you know. This little book is a treatise on sharing with you just part of the cake of life, not all. Much of what you are about to read is part of personal experience, part of experiences of those that have been close to me and of course, part of it from observations of successful and unsuccessful people, coupled with a bit of research here and there. By all means don't treat what will follow in this book as gospel truth for sometimes circumstances do change. Always be aware that truth is relative to time and space. Nothing is cast in stone. This as it may be, human nature has been well studied and some things we simply have to agree upon. You can't deny that the brain is the citadel of your body for instance; it's the commander in chief of all military operations in your body! Neither am I claiming to discover America, old Columbus did that for us. Am told it's in the Western hemisphere, I checked it up in an atlas and its true! Isn't that amazing? I didn't have to grapple in the dark for answers, for some one took the trouble to reveal the secret! Don't be afraid to be different.Dont be afraid to differ with people.Dont expect the world to agree with you. If that happens, chances are, you have nothing worth while to offer. When every body agrees with you, reexamine your views. Non conformity has been, through the better part of history, the mother of progress.

Fed up with her mother's humiliating behavior, Ryder tries to become popular at school in all the wrong ways. And when Maya attempts to help, she puts her successful career and her shaky love life at risk. Now with trouble they didn't see coming--and secrets they can no longer hide--these women must somehow find the courage to admit their mistakes, see each other for who they really are--and slowly, perhaps even joyfully, discover everything they could be.

Book excerpt: They used to joke about it. Like many brilliant scientists, Josh sometimes had trouble remembering things that needed doing in the “real” world—like buying groceries, eating regular meals, and talking to people. But he was happy to have his beloved wife, Lauren, remind him with her “honey do” lists. He just never realized how much he would need one when she was gone. Being a widower is not something Joshua Park ever expected. Given his solitary job, small circle of friends and family, and the social awkwardness he’s always suffered from, Josh has no idea how to negotiate this new, unwanted phase of life. But Lauren had a plan to keep him moving forward. A plan hidden in the letters she leaves him, giving him a task for every month in the year after her death. A plan that leads Joshua with a loving hand on a journey through grief, anger, and denial. It’s a journey that will take Joshua from his first outing as a widower to buy groceries…to an attempt at a dinner party where his lack of experience hosting creates a comic disaster…to finding a new best friend while weeping in the dressing room of a clothing store. As his grief makes room for new friendships and experiences, Joshua learns Lauren’s most valuable lesson: The path to happiness doesn’t follow a straight line. Funny, sometimes heart-wrenching, and always uplifting, this novel from New York Times bestselling author Kristan Higgins illuminates how life’s greatest joys are often hiding in plain sight.
