Book Tribes of Western India

Download or read book Tribes of Western India written by Dhananjay Kumar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has two key social formations, the castes and the tribes. Both groups can be studied from the perspective of society (samaj) and culture (sanskriti). However, studies on castes largely deal with social structure and less on culture, while studies on tribes focus more on culture than on social structure. What has resulted from this bias is a general misunderstanding that tribes have a rich culture but lack social structure. This volume emerges out of an in-depth empirical study of the social structure of five Scheduled Tribes (STs) in Gujarat, western India, viz., Gamit, Vasava, Chaudhari, Kukana and Warli. It analyses and compares their internal social organisation consisting of institutions of household, family, lineage, clan, kinship rules and marriage networks. The book also deals with changes taking place in the social structure of contemporary tribal societies. While the focus is mainly on the data from tribes of western India, the issues are relevant to pan-Indian tribes. An important contribution to the studies on tribes of India, this book will be of great interest to students and researchers of anthropology, sociology, demography, history, tribal studies, social work, public policy and law. It will also be of interest to professionals working with NGOs and civil society, programme and policy formulating authorities and bureaucrats.

Download or read book Life in Western India Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Katharine Blanche Guthrie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Western India, Vol. 2 It was a peaceful-looking place, shut out from the world by very high walls. A verandah lined the interior on three sides of the court, the end being occupied by the choultry, an ex ceedingly lofty, open hall. It was supported by wooden pillars formed from the holes of trees grown in some forest far south. They were effectively carved in conventional patterns, and painted red. Beyond the cell of the idol, in which a light glimmered, were the living-places of the priests. A few quiet pilgrims were gathered round a stone fountain. The quaint, old-world establishment carried one back in imagination many a century. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Spaces and Places in Western India

Download or read book Spaces and Places in Western India written by Bina Sengar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies places and spaces in Western India both as geographical locations and as imagined constructs. It uncovers the rich history of the region from the perspective of places of pilgrimage, commerce, community, expression and indigeneity. The volume examines how spaces are intrinsically connected to the lived experiences of people. It explores how spaces in Western India have been constructed over time and how these are reflected in both historical and contemporary settings – in the art, architecture, political movements and in identity formation. The rich examples explored in this volume include sites of Bhakti and Sufi literature, Maharashtrian-Sikh identity, Mahanubhav pilgrimage, monetary practices of the Peshwas and the internet as an emancipatory space for the Dalit youth in Maharashtra. The chapters in this book establish and affirm the forever evolving cultural topography of Western India. Taking a multidimensional approach, this book widens the scope of academic discussions on the theme of space and place. It will be useful for scholars and researchers of history, cultural studies, geography, the humanities, city studies and sociology.

Book Being Middle class in India

Download or read book Being Middle class in India written by Henrike Donner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as the beneficiary, driving force and result of globalisation, India’s middle-class is puzzling in its diversity, as a multitude of traditions, social formations and political constellations manifest contribute to this project. This book looks at Indian middle-class lifestyles through a number of case studies, ranging from a historical account detailing the making of a savvy middle-class consumer in the late colonial period, to saving clubs among women in Delhi’s upmarket colonies and the dilemmas of entrepreneurial families in Tamil Nadu’s industrial towns. The book pays tribute to the diversity of regional, caste, rural and urban origins that shape middle- class lifestyles in contemporary India and highlights common themes, such as the quest for upward mobility, common consumption practices, the importance of family values, gender relations and educational trajectories. It unpacks the notion that the Indian middle-class can be understood in terms of public performances, surveys and economic markers, and emphasises how the study of middle-class culture needs to be based on detailed studies, as everyday practices and private lives create the distinctive sub-cultures and cultural politics that characterise the Indian middle class today. With its focus on private domains middleclassness appears as a carefully orchestrated and complex way of life and presents a fascinating way to understand South Asian cultures and communities through the prism of social class.
