Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in the Soudan: Adventures Amongst the Tribes, and Travels in Egypt in 1881 and 1882 In November, 1881, I left England to accompany six gentlemen on an exploring expedition in the Soudan, and, in view of passing events in Egypt and that locality, I indulged in the hope that an account of my journey will not be unacceptable to the public. I held the post of medical officer to the expedition, partly on account of my experience in the Turkish war, where I was continually brought face to face with dysentery, ague, and other tropical diseases, which are so easily recognised without any extraneous assistance, medical or lay, but which are troublesome to treat, especially when hampered by an ignorant and fussy interference. Doubtless many faults of omission and commission may be found in my book; but I trust that those who criticise it will do so leniently, and remember that it has been written during spare hours, when the exigencies of practice would allow of my seeking recreation by the use of my pen. Oh, that mine enemy would write a book! was the heartfelt expression of a vindictive old gentleman, well known for his great patience. Book excerpt: "As in many post-conflict countries, the roles played by women during Sudan's long-lasting liberation struggle continue to go unrecognised. Thousands of women joined the southern liberation struggle in response to a political situation that affected whole communities, leaving the comfort and security of their homes not just to accompany their husbands but to fight for freedom, democracy, equity, justice, rights and dignity. As well as playing roles in the fighting, women acted as mothers, teachers and nurses, and filled numerous other roles during the war. The long-standing struggle for the liberation of South Sudan severely altered traditional gender roles as well as the societal structure as a whole. Women also suffered during the war. An increase in HIV, hunger and violence, particularly sexual violence, characterised their lives in Sudan as well as in exile for many years. Life in the post-conflict period continues to be challenging, as women try to carve out a meaningful life in a tenuous peace. This volume documents the lives of different groups of women in South Sudan. It seeks to understand the contributions made by a range of women both during the conflict and today. It describes the women of South Sudan: who they are, what they have experienced, what they hope and feel, what they experienced in the war, and whether the end of the war has brought meaningful change"--Back cover.

Book LIBERATING SOUTH SUDAN ONE PATIENT AT A TIME

Download or read book LIBERATING SOUTH SUDAN ONE PATIENT AT A TIME written by Nhial T. Tutlam and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people died so that South Sudan may be free. Except for the stories of those in the top echelons of the liberation struggle, the stories and important contributions of less known, equally worthy martyrs has not been told. This book tells the story of one of these remarkable people, Dr. Timothy Tutlam. Written from a son's perspective, the book narrates how a boy, who first left his native village in search of healthcare services for his ailing father, ended up becoming a physician providing medical care to his people in refugee camps and in the frontlines; his journey to join the first liberation movement; his small but important contributions to the struggle; his trials and tribulations; and his ultimate sacrifice while serving his people.

Book A Bittersweet Life in the Sudan and Beyond

Download or read book A Bittersweet Life in the Sudan and Beyond written by Joseph S. Canaan and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the blistering heat of the Saharan desert, to the perilous jungles of Southern Sudan, experience four decades of a man's life through the eyes of the one who lived it. Joseph Canaan takes you on a journey spanning four continents and the full range of human emotions. His story is one of hardship and intrigue, yet it is also one of joy, faith, and inspiration. Joseph's life story begins in Sudan, Africa. As a Catholic boy of Lebanese heritage, Joseph grew up in a largely Islamic country learning to live in true harmony with his Muslim brothers and sisters. In the process, he gained a deep respect for all faiths and ways of life, yet also strengthened his own devotion to a Catholic faith that has pulled him through the many dangerous situations related in his story. It is a faith so strong that he once considered becoming a Catholic priest and studied as a seminarian in Rome, Italy. Adventure seekers are sure to find a kindred spirit in Joseph as he relates his camping and hunting stories from across the Sudan. Scorpions, snakes, and tarantulas abound as he makes his first forays into the wilderness beyond his home town of Khartoum. Later, even larger game awaits him as his adventures take him deeper into the African jungles beyond. Largely impassable to western travelers today, Joseph takes you to areas now wracked by war and unspeakable violence. Travel safely through Joseph's eyes to Darfur and Southern Sudan. Experience a beautiful country as it was meant to be seen, long before the ugly hands of genocide, slavery, and civil war scarred the land. Not content to simply lay his eyes on the Sudanese countryside from the ground, Joseph continues his adventures in the skies as he learns to fly powerful agricultural aircrafts. Feel the emotion with him as he skims the earth at knee-trembling altitudes and navigates through hazardous dust storms. Joseph's emotive communication style will place you right in the heart of the action as he survives multiple near-death experiences including multiple plane crashes, as well as narrowly landing a sabotaged aircraft. His aviation aspirations, as well as his constant desire to explore new frontiers, eventually take him to the United States where he lives with his family today. However, his adventures don't end when he leaves the Sudan. Challenges find him wherever he goes. Join Joseph as he takes you through the difficulties faced when emigrating not only to another country, but another world altogether. Book The Wild Tribes of the Soudan

Download or read book The Wild Tribes of the Soudan written by Frank Linsly James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wild Tribes of the Soudan: An Account of Travel and Sport Chiefly in the Base Country; Being Personal Experiences and Adventures, During Three Winters Spent in the Soudan The map of the Base' country that accompanies this vol ume was made by my brother, Mr. W. D. James, assisted by Mr. Aylmer, from astronomical observations taken with a sextant every night. They carefully mapped out our route every day by aid of the sextant and prismatic compass. It adds a portion, however small, to the map of Africa. The woodcuts were all done in New York, from my brother's and Mr. Aylmer's photographs, and are specimens of a branch of art in which Americans excel. I would, in conclusion, ask the indulgence of the public for this effort of one who for the first time publishes a record of his daily life and experiences in Africa.
