The statistics are staggering; Bandstand brought in 40 million viewers a day when the country's population wasn't even 200 million and when many people were at work-one might size that up to airing a Super Bowl every day! However, Dick Clark's influence transcended the music. Against dissent, he integrated the dance floor and gave Baby Boomer America a daily vision of what a non-segregated society could be; early guests on his show included Chuck Berry and James Brown, as well as Jerry Lee Lewis and the Everly Brothers. Clark even made television an interactive pastime by reaching out to his viewers and getting them to call in and say what they thought about the couple of the day, or the song. This made Bandstand the progenitor of much of today's TV culture-shows like American Idol, The Voice and Dancing with the Stars. Dick Clark was also a friend of LIFE's; in this book, we bring back an earlier LIFE piece in which he reminiscences about the exciting early days of rock 'n' roll. He was a legend who introduced us to other legends, and for that, he will always be remembered.

It tells the true-life story of groups starting out, and the excitement of making it all the way to the top. And I was the only one that went everywhere the band did, having the same experiences. The changes in the way we tour on the ground and in the air, changes in sound equipment, show productions, TV shows, touring, recording, business and instruments. It tells of the fun, the hard work, the excitement, the danger and the responsibility of touring. I would go up against anybody in history that thinks they saw a lot of rock ’n’ roll bands in that time. I literally saw thousands and thousands. No one else alive can tell this story but me, because of the unique position I was in at the time. After 18 years on the road working with top American and top British groups, and having the business almost kill me a few times, I definitely have a very unique one of a kind story to tell. I have played Madison Square Garden's, Yankee Stadium, Dick Clark Caravan Star Tours, USO Tours, College tours, promotional tours, and other Country tours. I have done it all. Keep in mind that out of the entire population of the United States, 25% are baby boomers. And they were teenyboppers at that time. Looking back, I have no regrets except for one: THE ROCK ’N’ ROLL EVOLUTION WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. I was right in the middle of it!
