Download or read book Lifeboats Projectiles and Other Means for Saving Life Classic Reprint written by Robert Bennet Forbes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lifeboats, Projectiles, and Other Means for Saving Life It will be seen on reading the following pages, that there is very little if any original matter contained therein. It is to be hoped however that the renewal of many old suggestions made by the writer, and others, may be productive of good, and be the means of calling the attention of those who manufacture laws, to the growing necessity for increased care in protecting the lives of those who go to sea. Whatever may be the award of the public in regard to this little work as a literary composition, the writer will rest content with having tried to mitigate the dangers of the sea, and will consider his time and money well spent, if through these means a single life shall be saved. Book The Deadly Shipwrecks of the Powhattan New Era on the Jersey Shore

Download or read book The Deadly Shipwrecks of the Powhattan New Era on the Jersey Shore written by Captain Robert F. Bennett and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1854, two horrendous shipwrecks took place off the New Jersey coast. The Powhattan and the New Era were both American-flag sailing packet ships carrying hopeful European immigrants to new lives in America. The ships ran aground on the offshore sandbars along the shoreline between Sandy Hook and Little Egg Inlet, claiming the lives of many passengers and crew. The staggering casualties finally prompted calls from the public and politicians for reforms to the system for rescues that the federal government had in place. The tragedies ultimately resulted in changes that prevented countless similar deaths. This unique and gripping account offers minute-by-minute details of the deadly wrecks, their causes and their final outcomes.

Book Painting the Inhabited Landscape

Download or read book Painting the Inhabited Landscape written by Margaretta M. Lovell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2023-03-27 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impulse in much nineteenth-century American painting and culture was to describe nature as a wilderness on which the young nation might freely inscribe its future: the United States as a virgin land, that is, unploughed, unfenced, and unpainted. Insofar as it exhibited evidence of a past, its traces pointed to a geologic or cosmic past, not a human one. The work of the New England artist Fitz H. Lane, however, was decidedly different. In this important study, Margaretta Markle Lovell singles out the more modestly scaled, explicitly inhabited landscapes of Fitz H. Lane and investigates the patrons who supported his career, with an eye to understanding how New Englanders thought about their land, their economy, their history, and their links with widely disparate global communities. Lane’s works depict nature as productive and allied in partnership with humans to create a sustainable, balanced political economy. What emerges from this close look at Lane’s New England is a picture not of a “virgin wilderness” but of a land deeply resonant with its former uses—and a human history that incorporates, rather than excludes, Native Americans as shapers of land and as agents in that history. Calling attention to unexplored dimensions of nineteenth-century painting, Painting the Inhabited Landscape is a major intervention in the scholarship on American art of the period, examining how that body of work commented on American culture and informs our understanding of canon formation.

Book excerpt: Warfare of the early modern period is associated with the start of the widespread use of gunpowder and the development of suitable weapons to use the explosive, including artillery and handguns; for this reason the era is also referred to as the age of gunpowder warfare (a concept introduced by Michael Roberts in the 1950s). Shock weapons that extend or enhance the deadly force of the humans at close contact. These would include: clubs, axes, tomahawks, knives, swords, sabres, spears, halberds, and pikes. The most important surviving shock weapon today is the bayonet, although some might say it is a shovel doing double duty. Missile weapons that are hurled or projected over various distances to inflict destruction upon the enemy: slingshots, boomerangs, javelins, bows and arrows, crossbows, ballistas, catapults, and Greek fire. This book has been written keeping in view the requirements of undergraduate and postgraduate students and research scholars in the area of weapons and warfare and Military history.
