Out of these memorials, it was thought that such extracts and passages might be selected and brought together, as to give to the work, to a considerable extent, the interest, the authority, and even the form, of an Autobiography. There is reason to believe, too, that it was the expectation and wish of Washington that his Life should be thus written, for in several letters he expresses his conviction that his memoirs could not be written a satisfactory or effectual manner without a large selection from his papers. On this plan, therefore, as far as practicable, the present life has been written. Nearly every recent biographer has announced that he was now taking down the wooden image called "Washington" from its high pedestal and reviving it, somewhat as the statue of Galatea became a living woman before the astonished gaze of Pygmalion, the sculptor who had fashioned her beautiful form in marble. These resuscitations have been going on for a generation, and several of the so-called "true" Washingtons bear hardly a family resemblance to one another, so it is reasonable to infer that some of them, at least, have as little likeness to the great original himself.
