Book Tolerance Discourse and Young Adult Holocaust Literature

Download or read book Tolerance Discourse and Young Adult Holocaust Literature written by Rachel Dean-Ruzicka and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, exactly, does one mean when idealizing tolerance as a solution to cultural conflict? This book examines a wide range of young adult texts, both fiction and memoir, representing the experiences of young adults during WWII and the Holocaust. Author Rachel Dean-Ruzicka argues for a progressive reading of this literature. Tolerance Discourse and Young Adult Holocaust Literature contests the modern discourse of tolerance, encouraging educators and readers to more deeply engage with difference and identity when studying Holocaust texts. Young adult Holocaust literature is an important nexus for examining issues of identity and difference because it directly confronts systems of power, privilege, and personhood. The text delves into the wealth of material available and examines over forty books written for young readers on the Holocaust and, in the last chapter, neo-Nazism. The book also looks at representations of non-Jewish victims, such as the Romani, the disabled, and homosexuals. In addition to critical analysis of the texts, each chapter reads the discourses of tolerance and cosmopolitanism against present-day cultural contexts: ongoing debates regarding multicultural education, gay and lesbian rights, and neo-Nazi activities. The book addresses essential questions of tolerance and toleration that have not been otherwise considered in Holocaust studies or cultural studies of children’s literature.

Book Trying to Make It

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rajeev V. Gundur
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2022-08-15
  • ISBN : 1501764489

Download or read book Trying to Make It written by Rajeev V. Gundur and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trying to Make It is R. V. Gundur's journey from the US-Mexico border to America's heartland, from America's prisons to its streets, in search of the true story of the drug trade and the people who participate in it. The book begins in the Paso del Norte area, encompassing the sister cities of Ciudad Juárez and El Paso, which has been in the public eye as calls for securing the border persist. From there, it moves on to Phoenix, which was infamously associated with the drug trade through a series of kidnappings. Finally, the book goes on to Chicago, which has been a lightning rod of criticism for its gangs and violence. Gundur highlights the similarities and differences that exist in the American drug trade within the three sites and how they relate to current drug trade narratives in the US. At each stop, the reader is transported to the city's historical and contemporary contexts of the drug trade and introduced to the individuals who have lived them. Drug retailers, street and prison gang members, wholesalers, and the law enforcement personnel who try to stop them offer readers a comprehensive look at how various illicit enterprises work together to supply the drugs that American users demand. Most importantly, through a combination of macro- and microlevel vantage points, and comparative analysis of three key sites in illicit drug operations, the stories in Trying to Make It remind us that the people involved in the drug trade, for the most part, do not deserve vilification. Far from being a seemingly uniform, widespread threat or an unlimited array of bogeymen and women, they are ordinary people, living ordinary lives, just trying to make it.

Book excerpt: Now hailed as a "proto-feminist classic" (Vulture), Pulitzer Prize winner Herman Wouk's powerful coming-of-age novel about an ambitious young woman pursuing her artistic dreams in New York City has been a perennial favorite since it was first a bestseller in the 1950s. A starry-eyed young beauty, Marjorie Morgenstern is nineteen years old when she leaves home to accept the job of her dreams--working in a summer-stock company for Noel Airman, its talented and intensely charismatic director. Released from the social constraints of her traditional Jewish family, and thrown into the glorious, colorful world of theater, Marjorie finds herself entangled in a powerful affair with the man destined to become the greatest--and the most destructive--love of her life. Rich with humor and poignancy, Marjorie Morningstar is a classic love story, one that spans two continents and two decades in the life of its heroine. "I read it and I thought, 'Oh, God, this is me.'" --Scarlet Johansson

Book excerpt: Something just didn't seem right when Wallace McRae got word in the middle of the night that an eminent chemist he'd just interviewed had taken his own life by slashing his wrists with a straight razor in his bath tub.McRae's job, which he'd been forced to take after getting fired for drinking, was to prepare obituaries of famous, older people so his new employer, dead.com, could respond to a person's death with a quick story, ideally full of dirt and rumors that would attract online viewers - and advertising. His odious boss's motto on how far to go in writing an obituary was: "You can't libel a dead man."Taking the job was a Faustian bargain. McRae, known to all as just Mack, had traded his skills as a prize-winning investigative reporter for health insurance that covered the mounting medical bills of his dying wife.Mack had often interviewed the dead chemist, who was obsessed with winning the Nob el Prize for his breakthrough work on obesity and dementia. As he told his boss the night he got the news of the man's death: "He didn't have a suicidal bone in his body."Intrigued, his boss ordered him to dig into the matter, mostly because he saw the possibility of millions of eyeballs coming to his obituary website to read a juicy, viral story. Mack saw something different: a chance to redeem himself with a legitimate scoop that showed the man's official suicide had been something more sinister. As he would find, others with a huge financial interest in the true story were willing to resort to threats and even murder to muzzle Mack before he could print the truth.
