Book excerpt: Millions of people have been deeply affected by the life and teachings of the Guru Narayana, who is the central figure of this book. This is a biography, not only of the Guru Narayana, but of Guruhood itself. Religions and philosophies have their sources in such men, and the aim here is to clarify this fact, without being sentimental or sensational. In doing so, many hitherto baffling enigmas of Indian life are given a rational explanation for the first time. Nataraja Guru, the disciple-successor of the Narayana Guru, uses the contemplative discipline which was characteristic of the Guru Narayana, and brings the Advaita Vedanta method into the forefront of global thought as understood today, introducing a new science of wisdom-dialectics. Nataraja Guru¿s scheme of correlation between science and mysticism amounts to an epochal advance in philosophy. The word of the Guru provides a quantity of original material for study, including fully annotated and carefully translated writings of Guru Narayana. It describes the physical and psychological conditions of South India with great brilliance. The spirituality of India is set forth here in its clearest terms, unambiguous and shorn of all limiting frontiers, suitable for readers in all parts of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nārāyana Guru also seen as Sree Nārāyana Guru Swami, was a Hindu saint, sadhu and social reformer of India. He was born into an Ezhava family, in an era when people from that community and other communities that were regarded as Avarna, faced much social injustice in the caste-ridden Kerala society. Gurudevan, as he was known by his followers, led a reform movement in Kerala, rejected casteism and promoted new values of spiritual freedom and social equality. He stressed the need for the spiritual and social upliftment of the downtrodden by their own efforts through the establishment of temples and educational institutions. In the process he denounced the superstitions that clouded the fundamental Hindu cultural convention of Chaturvarna.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a biography of Narayana Guru, which introduces him, faithful to his true form, as an embodiment of Wisdom. Indeed, it has been written by someone who has dedicated her life to the learning and teaching of this very Wisdom, especially as we humans may actualize it in our lives of the here and now. Although most extant biographies of the Guru were written by persons belonging to his own geographical and cultural background, this one stands an exception in this respect. The author of this work, Nancy Yeilding, belongs to and lives in a region and culture at the opposite side of the globe. Yet this can be no obstacle, because the Wisdom taught by the Guru is one in essence, which is life’s highest aim, guide, and joy, irrespective of all geographical and cultural differences. – Guru Muni Narayana Prasad

This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sree Narayana Guru (1855-1928) was a spiritual leader and social reformer who led powerful movements to promote social equality. Not Many, But One brings together his work in two rich volumes of translation and interpretation, pieced together for a modern readership. In Volume 2, we see how Sree Narayana Guru revived the Advaita philosophy. The book also focuses on the correlation between the teachings of Advaita, the conclusions of modern physics and cosmology, and how Advaita reveals the complex secrets of the universe. It explains the theoretical, observational and experimental findings given by science about the origin, evolution, existence and future of our universe. Volume 2 also explores the Big Bang theory, the inflation theory, the role of dark matter and dark energy, the concept of space and time, the anthropic principle, supersymmetry, spontaneous symmetry breaking, string theory and other latest avenues of modern science. The translations, explanations and commentary given are simple and conceivable by ordinary readers who may not be well equipped with the complexities of intuitional spiritual findings of Advaita and hypothetic conclusions of quantum physics-but without compromising on the authenticity of the works. Vedic philosophers, physicists, cosmologists and enthusiasts who love science and spirituality will appreciate this enterprising effort - though with limitations - in bringing closer the two hitherto uncompromising schools of thought. The devotees of Sree Narayana Gurudev will find an opportunity to go deeper into his works.

Download or read book The Hagiographer and the Avatar written by Antonio Rigopoulos and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this biographical study, Antonio Rigopoulos explores the fundamental role of a hagiographer within a charismatic religious movement: in this case, the postsectarian, cosmopolitan community of the Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba. The guru's hagiographer, Narayan Kasturi, was already a distinguished litterateur by the time he first met Sathya Sai Baba in 1948. The two lived together at the guru's hermitage more or less continuously from 1954 up until Kasturi's death, in 1987. Despite Kasturi's influential hagiography, Sathyam Sivam Sundaram, little scholarly attention has been paid to the hagiographer himself and his importance to the movement. In detailing Kasturi's relationship to Sathya Sai Baba, Rigopoulos emphasizes that the hagiographer's work was not subordinate to the guru's definition of himself. Rather, his discourses with the holy man had a reciprocal and reinforcing influence, resulting in the construction of a unified canon. Furthermore, Kasturi's ability to perform a variety of functions as a hagiographer successfully mediated the relationship between the guru and his followers. Drawing on years of research on the movement as well as interviews with Kasturi himself, this book deepens our understanding of this important pan-Indian figure and his charismatic religious movement.
Download or read book Developmental Modernity in Kerala written by P. Chandramohan (Museum curator) and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP Yogam), one of the earliest social reform movements in Kerala, investigates the relationship of social reform, religion, and caste. The Yogam drew inspiration from the ideas of Narayana Guru, which suited the aspirations of the upwardly mobile Ezhava middle class, who were the main benefactors of the movement. In both religious and social matters, the Guru was a traditionalist who strove to create a modern outlook among the masses. He conceived of the temple as a social space where everybody could meet and exchange ideas. While pursuing his spiritual mission, he advocated education, industrialization, and abolition of caste as necessary prerequisites for social regeneration. This work demonstrates that the SNDP was an organization of an emerging Ezhava middle class, which worked as both its strength and weakness. It focused on such issues as education, employment in government service, industrialization, abolition of cyclical rituals and caste, anti-alcoholism and the demand for a new law of inheritance. However, some disjunction between principles and practice led to the decline of the SNDP movement. Ironically, since the movement was largely focused on the interests of the privileged section of the Ezhava community, it achieved Ezhava solidarity only around caste. This study is a significant example of how a social reform movement turned into a caste solidarity movement.
