This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Thomas Hodgkin, Fellow of University College D. C. L. Oxford and Durham, D. Litt; Dublin As a member of another Church it has naturally been impossible for me to explain, as it were from inside, his work and in uence in the Society of Friends. Here I have been glad to supplement his own words by the words of others who could write as Friends themselves. I have wished to make clear what his work for the Society was, and what were his opinions as to its position in the Church of Christ, buti have not considered it my business to discuss his Opinions, still less to controvert them. My one desire has been to state them fairly, and to let him speak for himself. There is very much that all can learn from a life conscientiously and devotedly lived in accordance with the convictions held, even when complete agreement with those convictions is impossible. No one can fail to be impressed with the earnestness with which Dr. Hodgkin sought the truth, with his devotion to the truth which he believed had been revealed to him, and with his tolerance to those who differed from him. He never provoked controversy, and as it would be difficult to write about him in a controversial spirit, so I hope it will prove equally difficult to read about him in a controversial spirit. It is obvious that it would have been impossible for me to prepare this book without the constant assistance of Dr. Hodgkin's family. I cannot be sufficiently grateful for the confidence they have shown me and for the help they have generously given me. His sisters, Lady Fry and Mrs. Waterhouse, his brothers, Jonathan and Howard Hodgkin, and his brother-in-law, Sir Edward Fry, have helped me in the same generous spirit as his own children have shown. Amongst all I am bound to single out the two who were nearest to him to the last, his wife and his eldest daughter. They have given ungrudging help, and shown unfailing patience with me in every stage of my work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Templeton Foundation Prize for Outstanding Books in Theology and Natural Sciences John Brooke and Geoffrey Cantor discuss exciting developments in the sciences, whether in Big Bang cosmology, chaos theory or genetic engineering, in relation to moral and spiritual questions. Contemporary discussion can, however, be blind if it ignores previous forms of engagement between science and religion. In their Gifford Lectures the authors argue that not one but several historical approaches are required to achieve critical perspective and balanced understanding. Accordingly, each chapter demonstrates the value of a particular historical method. Ranging from alchemy to new-age philosophies, from the Galileo affair to the Darwinian controversies, this is an indispensable and highly accessible book for all interested in science and religion.

Download or read book Edward Gibbon and Empire written by Rosamond McKitterick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Gibbon's interpretations of empire and the intellectual context in which he formulated them against a background of the eighteenth- and late twentieth-century knowledge of late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Gibbon's ideas of empire, his understanding of monarchy and the balance of power, his sources and working methods, the structure of the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, his attitude towards the barbarians, the contrasting treatments of the eastern and western Empire, his appreciation of past civilizations and their material remains, his audience and their reactions - contemporary and Victorian - are considered in the light of the latest research on eighteenth-century intellectual history on the one hand and on late antiquity, Byzantium and the Middle Ages on the other. The book breaks new ground in taking the form of a dialogue between experts on the fields about which Gibbon himself wrote, and eighteenth-century intellectual historians.
